    The loss of the Merry isn’t just Usopp losing a friend. He sees himself as the Merry, as the farther along they go on their journey the tougher things are going to get and Usopp feels like he isn’t going to be able to provide anything useful to the crew. If they can abandon the Merry like this, what’s stopping them from abandoning him once he’s no longer useful. Usopp is very self conscious and it really comes through in this arc.

      Yeah it's weird how many people seem to miss this. It's not about the ship per se, it's about Usopp seeing himself in the ship and fearing that he will be discarded as well along the way if he becomes a burden on the rest of the crew. His Sogeking persona is not just a mask to hide his shame behind it's also a reflection of what he wants to become for the crew, a reliable warrior of the sea that they can depend on.

    Sanji has consistently demonstrated that he's a more tactical, secret agent-type thinker, despite being Luffy's Left Hand Man.
    - In Little Garden, he's the one who talked to Crocodile, pretended to be Mr.3 and said he'd killed the Straw Hats and found the Eternal Pose to Alabasta, so they wouldn't be stuck on Little Garden for a year waiting for their Log Pose to set to the next island.
    - In Alabasta, he's the one who planned to cause a distraction and break into the Raindinners Casino, then break his crew out again.
    - In Skypeia, he's the one who sabotaged the Arc Maxim to prevent it's vertical ascent, buying him time to get Nami and Usopp off the ship.
    - In Water 7, he's the one who realized that the only way off the island during the Aqua Laguna was through the sea train, so he parked there and scoped it out to look for Robin since that was the only way out.

    • @rogerthecat929

      That's definitely how I explain him when people ask what the difference between him and zoro is.
      Zoro is more the enforcer type, more blunt, might makes right type, whereas sanji will generally wander off and anticipate and think what else besides fighting can be done.
      Sanji I believe is also a better communicator among the two where zoro is better at commanding. Sanji will actually talk to island inhabitants like conis or diamond head.

    Regarding the point of Usopp's actions being unreasonable: Last week in the Davy Back Arc you mentioned that you felt as if Usopp didn't do much/wasn't much of an asset to the crew and that is exactly the thing Usopp felt too. Of course there is the whole thing with the connection to the Merry, but in my opinion he was projecting the whole thing onto himself, fearing the crew will abandon him once situations get tougher (threat such as Aokiji) and he will no longer be of use. So Usopp being the coward he is, fears being left by his friends so he cooses to leave first.

    I think that in many ways Luffy telling Usopp about what was going to happen with the merry in his "brushing over it" kind of way IS one of the reasons it escalated the way it did, even if Luffy was, at the end of the day, doing it that way for Usopp's benefit. Usopp really needed someone there to talk about it with the same level of importance and significance as he was and work through the emotions that would bring. Luffy just "brushing it off" only ended up adding to Usopp's perception that the crew was "abandoning" the merry. Ultimately, it was both Usopp's insecurities and Luffy's mishandling of the situation that lead to the result we got.

They were trying to rescue Robin but she in their face told them she is leaving. That's why when Nami heard Iceberg about Robin not betraying them, she fell down with relief. It was like a mountain of doubt left her. Thats why she also said, when you are doubting yourself, it's hard to fight full power, but now SH knows they need to save Robin, their power will know no limits. I'm surprised you think Zoro didn't have great moments in the arc! I personally find his monologue to Luffy about what being a captain is about (after he fights Usopp) and also his thoughts about whether or not kill Robin to be peak content, especially considering how he slowly shows he deserves to be vice-captain,

    My favorite thing about Robin is you notice how she doesn't call any of the crew by their names because she has trouble getting close to people which really plays into her backstory as someone who has constantly been on the run since she was nine.

    My favorite Zoro moment in this arc was him mediating the conflict between Luffy and Usopp. He firmly tells Luffy that he needs to put his foot down and act like a captain. He makes Luffy realize that he has responsibilities that come with the role of "captain" that go beyond just being friends with everyone. There needs to be a framework for what will and will not be tolerated in the Straw Hat crew. I don't know if I fully agree with Zoro's opinion here, but it was excellent food for thought.

    When you were talking about reading the pages that are not the chapters, you mean the cover stories or the SBS
    To clarify, SBS is the Q&A of the author, there is a lot of interesting and funny info there, but that is a complement to the main story
    THE COVERS are really important, because there is actual canon story in those, for example, in chapters 35 to 75 the covers show how Buggy and his crew found Alvida and join to attack Luffy in Loguetown.
    The covers are really important the further you go so keep it in mind. Also there are covers that are just drawings that people ask Oda to draw, normally it says "reader request..." those have no importance.

    • @siegpasta
      @siegpasta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      yes, but its iportant to point out that SBS = CANNON. Oda goes out of his way to write stuff into the story that he's revealing in the SBS. The reason why that is the case?
      Oda's world is too large and this story has already been extented by so many years and he's still not got time to fit everything in xD so he's excluding "some" detail (yeah I know, crazy to say for a story like One Piece where you almost get too many details at time, but in a good way.) and then he gives it out in the SBS. Btw "SBS" is a japanese phrase... so jusst saying "QnA" would be more natural cause that's enlgish and they mean the same. One piece internet community is weird sometimes.
      Anyway, there are times where he did get some illogical inconsistencies and he adress it in the SBS ina funny way, like the "super floaty wood" and actually unironically write it into the story later as a major plot point that must have been there or the story wouldn't be able to progress. Lol. Oda is great.

    • @moguelgc3288
      @moguelgc3288 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@siegpasta Oh yeah, absolutely canon, that's what I meant with "complement", it adds to the main story. I didn't want to get into details because there are the vivre cards too and all this info that expands the world. I just wanted to give Merphy a way to distinguish both and pay attention to the covers because she hasn't addressed them yet and (SPOILERS)
      WE KNOW a certain old man is coming to say hi and I think that moment is more impactful if you also have the cover story in mind

    • @siegpasta
      @siegpasta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@moguelgc3288 Yep. The best way to describe the cover story for her would be to say that every manga has a cover that the author usually draws images on.
      But in One Piece which is very specific to One Piece, Oda goes out of his way to make small arcs that run parallel to the actual arc of that chapter the cover story was depicted on, which means that not all of it is canon, most are just funny things that fans want to see "if this was real in One Piece, how would Oda draw it?" basically.
      But then you have the rare story arcs, but yes it's actual canon and it's important. So even though you don't know when a cover story is going to come up, just reading all of the cover arcs is the best way.
      also, the "funny depictions" are usually all really great and I enjoy them alot. I don't know if anyone dislikes that. It's just another nice addition.

    My favorite little moment throughout Water 7
    Luffy - His position as the captain is being question by Iceberg when he refuse to believe that Going Merry can't sail anymore and that when he learned that he have to moved on
    Usopp - He felt insecure throughout this entire thing I love the line "You're the man who'll be the pirate king right, Luffy? but for me I didn't need to go that far" Such a great line for Usopp since his dream is just to overcome himself as a coward, It's genius.
    Zoro - He is the pillar of the crew, the one who's not waver to anything. He's ready for any decision that Luffy is making, that the best right hand man you could have also his line when Luffy win against Usopp "That's what it mean to be a captain. If you falter, who can we trust"
    Nami - She willing to overlook anything that will make the crew fall apart and when usopp got beat up she's only care about him no mention of money at all
    Sanji - It might not look like it but he's a kind hearted man, he's always goes on a solo mission and being that trump card to the crew and you pretty much said everything that I loved about him like when he kicked luffy and when he trying to go after Usopp
    Chopper - He's like a kid that seeing their parent going through a divorce, it's heartbreaking seeing him still wanting to threat Usopp injury and when the aqua laguna is gonna hit the Water 7, him and sanji is the one to trying to warn usopp about it.
    I feel like One Piece always does a character so well and the crew dynamic is so good!

He mentioned about how Ussop saw the Merry as himself, A weak member of the Strawhats and Seeing the crew abandon them so casually made him feel like when they find out how utterly useless he is they will do the same to him. I thought it was a beautiful examination into just the amount of subtext that Oda puts into his writing and honestly I love what both of you pulled out of it.

      Also, it was through him that the crew got the Merry in the first place, so after he lost the 200M he probably felt that the Merry was his only worthwhile contribution to the crew. Then Luffy says they’re “abandoning” it …
      It’s just stellar writing from Oda all round.

    Sth I noticed on reread and that adds on even more to Usopp's situation is the fact that most Strawhat Crew members were sought after before they joined the crew. One of the few exceptions was Usopp (and Robin). I mean, they went after a cook, so they added Sanji. They needed a doctor, so they called Chopper. They desperately needed a navigator, so they went after Nami. Usopp, on the other hand, joined the crew in an arc they needed a boat, and now this boat has reached the end of its journey. This becomes even more impactful considering Usopp was the shipwright of sorts for the crew, and now the group was even looking for a shipwright as well. Hell, Oda even created Kaku, who at first was a shipwright who resembled Usopp - I don't know if it actually affected Usopp, but it did leave a mark in me afterwards.

      Actually Ussop was looked after as well since Luffy wanted a sharpshooter as well.

    you forgot the zoro line when luffy vs usopp was done.
    Luffy: its heavy
    Zoro: thats the burden of being a captain. do not falter, because if you do whom we can rely on

    25:56 ironically enough, Franky looks pretty simular to Luffy's drawing of his ideal shipwright, with the gigantic forearms, skinny legs, and the hair style
