Bridge strike at Lawrence Hill Station, with 67002. 24 years ago.

  • In November 2000, brake failure resulted with Postal from Bristol Parkway to Temple Meads running into rear of coal train, which carries on towards BTM .So 67002 rides up onto rear wagons, then rides along until it hits the road bridge, with subsequent brake in coal train consist. Driver not seriously injured, only a broken arm; very lucky !!
Thanks to friends in Bristol for the tip off, giving me time to drive from Cardiff before closure of the site. Look out for extended version soon

This video amazes me in two ways:-
    1) the driver was not seriously injured - he was very lucky.
    2) 67002 was not written off, unlike the MGRs that visibly weren't so lucky!
    Very well captured.

I was at Newport Docks a few weeks later when 2 more cabs were delivered with the next batch of locos. it's quite amazing that the loco " jumped up " onto the last wagon considering their profile and also the fact the loco didn't fall onto the platform. Have you seen my vid. of the derailment at Cardiff ?

I can remember when this happened all those years ago!
The sound of the horn being continously sounded, but there was a brief pause of silence and then a huge bang as it either hit the wagons or the bridge!
I was on a night shift at the time so I was trying to get some sleep and it was only when I was watching the local news that I realised what had happened.
    Great video👍

On a non related point, our readers might be amused to note that after a derailment of an E.M.U not very far outside Havant, the nearest breakdown crane was located in Cardiff. Nice to know a local crane is on hand to help sort out a few problems! The real belter however, is that the Crane Operator himself was observed reading the How To manual whilst operating said crane. All details available online ' in the interests of the general public'. Along with many other quirks arising from various incidents and accidents all over the Southern Region in BR days.Cheers, Alistair ( ex- BR Signalman and Crossing Keeper)

think you ought to state this was driver error, not brake failure. the previous driver had isolated the brake ready for being dragged in top and tail move, the 2nd driver then done the same the unofficial way. when he got back in the loco he only reinstated the unofficial way as he hadn't checked whether the E70 cock had been operated, then when he wanted the brakes to work, oh dear, still isolated. on top of that he then didn't operate the emergency brake as he claimed he hadn't been shown.

What happened was as the train was top and tailed by 67002 and 67012, 67002 was putting the brakes on and 67012 was taking the brakes off as no one had flicked a switch in 67012 to make her under control of 67002

July 27th 2022: just came onto my feed lol. Awesome video and new to me. Unless I saw it with my own eyes, I would never have believed an engine could mount a coal truck like that and ride it like a skateboard!
So many questions! How fast was it going at time of impact....How LOUD must that have been!...What happened to all the back-ups and fail-safe systems?? Imagine if it had not been a coal truck, but a passenger train?!

Yes, the driver of the post office train, 67002, had not connected the brakes of the stock to his loco, so as he ran down the incline from Bristol Parkway he couldn't stop at the signal at Lawrance Hill station, hit the back of the coal train on the same track, his loco, 67002, rode up on the last two wagons and was moved on and hit the bridge as the coal train was slowly moving on..hope this make it clear ?

Great shots - astonishing scene - poor driver must have thought his time had come seeing what he was approaching - I wonder if riding up on the back of the coal wagons lessened the impact to a degree but still be a hell of a bang judging by the state of the destroyed wagons and distance travelled over them

@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways Believe me, this is weirding me out a touch. I distinctly remember it. I remember being shocked at the fact that that had happened and I hadn't heard it, being as I lived in a flat above a shop that was on the same block as the old Stuckey's clothes shop that butts up to that station. There used to be a motorcycle shop on the end of that block and my flat was above the shop next door. A few doors down from the old model shop. But I left there in, I think '93/4 and moved across the road to a flat above the local Asian shop run by Raj. Next door to the Post Office. In fact, the guy who ran that Post Office was my Landlord. I was there until '96 when I moved to Weston-super-mare. Been here since. My mates who live around that area took the mickey out of me for being typically deaf and not hearing the bang, which I assumed resulted from such a crash and that I was probably asleep. How very very weird. I'm going to make a few phone calls to figure this out. I must have something muddled up somewhere.

If only someone filmed the collision. So a mail train travelling at 50 Mph managed to mount itself onto coal wagons then collide with a bridge. That's a rare incident. In fact, American train crash tests have shown that when a locomotive collides with freight wagons, they tend to mount them.

    • @TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways
      @TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways  7 ปีที่แล้ว

The coal train was moving ahead, but the mail train didn't stop as the driver hadn't connected the brakes on the stock and it was running downhill too
