u can buy a hat body from Manny's on 38th st between 6 & 7 ave, or at least u used to be able to, it's online too..called manhatco I think, it depends, a wool felt body is cheap, but they don't respond well to shaping like a fur felt one. Fur felt could cost $30 to $45 for regular flat finishes, and $50 to $75 for velours & long hair beaver finishes and fancy stuff, animal prints etc, U can get "velour" fur felt which has a velvety texture on one or both sides, depending on how much u want to pay. (double sided velour costs more) .and remember.. I am not using a hat body, or "blank", I'm starting with a finished hat that is unshaped. already stiffened and blocked.. ..again, fur felt will work better for shaping. unshaped hats are called "open crown" when they are round, open and uncreased on top. If you have a regular fur felt hat, u can reshape it into open crown and just start again with any shape, using steam. Without steaming your shape into place, it won't hold in shape. then when u are set on a shape, u steam it in.
Sadarryle Stephens ..really? That’s fantastic, I know someone who learned at the library ! ..and now he makes hats for Calvin Klein ,and celebrities..and supports his family making hats..if u do visit the shop, please introduce yourself, I’d love to meet you, and see one of your hats! Happy new year, and thanks for watching !!!!! Sincerely, Kevin
Dimitri Masurat ah, that’s an old, old hat, one of my personal hats , it’s not open crown, I just popped the crown out temporarily for the video,it’s higher crowned, short brimmed hat from about 15-20 years ago that we used to sell, a custom Borsalino called the Antonio. That’s a name we made up, the style doesn’t really exist anywhere now,unfortunately.. I can’t think of a short brim,Ed hat with a crown that high, the closest thing would be out Córdoba in taupe..
@@KTGHATS Thanks Kevin, I said it wrong. I mean the second hat. That one you have in your hand at 1:12min. It looks a litte bit like a stetson austra bit with a higher an more round crown. Thanks for your great videos 😊👍🏼
I went to this shop and bought my own fedora it was really good quality, But I want to try making my own hat with the felt hat blank, but how much would it cost from somewhere to get just a blank one? I live in England, I visited when I was on holiday and just wondered if you knew a good website or anything? Thanks!
they are called "hat bodies" and it depends on the quality. here are many, many qualities.. look up "hat bodies" wool felt is the cheapest, then there is fur felt, which is much more money, but rainproof, and then velour finished fur felt, which is more velvet-like in texture, they can have velour on one side or on both, depending on what you want, and how much u want to spend, then there are long hair finishes, called "beaver finishes" these beaver felt are way more..u can pay $75 for those, maybe $30 to $50 for fur felt, and wool is way less, but not the best quality.. good to practice with though.but not so responsive to this kind of stuff, maybe if u stiffen it a lot, you can also buy untrimmed hats from places that have some shape in them, and an inside sweatband, you just add an outer band and trimming.. but shaping a hat body is not easy. you need more than just steam. it is an entirely different process than what I am doing, I am hand shaping, or hand blocking finished hat by good companies, high end felts.. . to properly shape an unfinished hat body, you need hat blocks, (mold) and industrial strength steam, all sorts of stuff, stiffeners, sewing machines.. it can get complex..u can fake it and stiffen it,let it dry, then do the shaping stuff.. but then there's no sweatband,,but u can still practice,
They’re slightly different, the crease on the top of a porkpie is a little thinner/tighter, and it’s flat on top, a telescopic has a slightly rounded top.
I have an open-crown , vintage borsalino that’s in excellent condition BUT I am a small person and the crown looks ridiculous on me. When I push the crown WAY down it looks great. Problem is it’s valour so I’m afraid to give it a new shape for fear of messing up the valour in the process. Can I send it to you? ...or call the store for pricing on that?
Yes, I've done hundreds of them..no big deal. I will not charge u a cent. Just $14.50 shipping fee which includes a nice hat box for free.🐱call Benji Monday or Tuesday 800-622-1911 ( or 212-239-4368 internationally) just mail it to us with a detailed note of what u want. KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Seriously? 😄 ...okey dokey! On second look not sure how old it is but it appears not worn except twice by me. When I wore it I just scrunched the top down (no creases) but it keeps popping back up of course. I’ve actually made my own tear drop on other hats with steam from my iron and it’s worked really well but They were wool not valour. Valour just seems likely to mark and flatten out if handled to much and I was afraid to try and ruin it since it’s a nicer hat. KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! I just wrote down all info above. I’d for sure rather you do it because you’re the pro. But If you think I could do valour without messing up the valour, I’d try. Like I mentioned. I’ve created a tear drop shape before on a regular wool hat using my steam iron and another time using my esthetician’s steamer, but Valour is so much like velvet and it seems like steam would mess up the fuzzy texture?? Do you have a video on working with valour? Thanks Kevin!!!! An awesome service you provide via these videos.
I think I hear Frank ... Zappa ... Po-jama People ? I couldn't catch it , I've heard it a zillion times , but it's been a while ... You're hot , then you're not , then you're cold , you're really getting old ... Po-jama People , Is that it ? Haha ! Something like that ... Great Video Kev ! Thanks ! Thought so. I can't say I'm super familiar with a lot of his stuff, but have great respect him, especially on account of his championing free speech and endeavoring into classical music. As it relates, I will share with you an interesting story. I am 31. When I was 23 I planned on moving to the city to try and make connects, get in the scene, try and make it big as songwriter performer. I was not raised religious. At this junction of my life I was providentially led to archaeological evidence of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and also that at the highest levels of the industry they're literally worshipping lucifer. But here's what's fascinating, Frank Zappa, based on his experience in politics and the industry warned that a fascist theocracy was coming to America. After 8 years of studying Bible prophecy, I've come to the exact same conclusion. This is also the view of seventh day adventists btw.
Aaaaw..that swirled shaped douse trace ...I have a hand woven hat woven with tiny thin strips of laulala with that shape and never knew what it was called. The local lady who wove it called it nalu (wave). See? THAT’S why I watch these videos! Learn stuff. 😎
"Ace-Deuce-Trace" is an old school shape that became popular on the streets & clubs of Bronx NY, , around 1970 or so, you started to see way more of them around '72-73 after the film,"Superfly" was released, and a few other copycat films that followed. The long hair Beaver hats were available in two tones swirls, vivid colors, animal prints There were many custom hatter's then . ...along w custom platform shoemakers..like the now defunct Paradise Bootery in Times Square. .famous for making theigh high platforms for hookers, players & pimps. (I had a pair of custom knee high platforms made in mirror silver leather w black & silver leather paisely heels,I still have them) These funky shapes all came from that era, folks would oil down their long hair Beaver hats w baby oil and comb cool swirls in them, brush them and style them, shine them up... Those hats are RARE but a select few buy them right up, the "Robin Hoods" are another rare 70's pimp shape, w the scooped back brim like Robin hood.. and super shiny, long hair beavers from that era w high crowns and two tone contrasting swirls .. I remember them, I was born in 66, I was young, but i remember those furry hats, they died when the furgora kangols came into fashion w break dancing, early hip hop. The LL Kool J shape ( the "Grouser") killed the pimp hats, all the hip hoppers switched to kangols, pumas, adidas.and the 70's "player" look was gone..

KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Oh wow! Yeah, I was around in those days but not in New York. I used to collect shoes...From the 1920s - 1970’s +. because I wear a size 4 and old styles fit. I definitely had a few of those platforms but never remember that hat. It takes on a whole new dimension when woven into straw. Like a wave. That’s why the local Hawaiian hat weaver called it “wave” design in Hawaiian. Oh wait a minute. I need to dig through my hat stash. Maybe I do have that. I don’t collect shoes anymore but have been known to take antique and vintage shoe buckles off of shoes and incorporate into hatbands in place of the bow. Show us those platform boots!! Shoes go with hats like bread goes with a sandwich.!
I love the swirls. Beautiful work.
Thank you! 😊
Zappa PO-JAMA PEOPLE! Good taste all around, Kev!

Hi Kevin. At the moment 5.15 you talk about a particular crown shape. But I could not hear it so well.
