Well done video. One thing I've noticed in your (and all similar) video, the four bolts in the middle of the valve cover aren't mentioned (making 15 bolts instead of 11). I struggled with it for an hour before I figured out to remove those bolts. Once I removed them, the cover popped right off. If you could note that in your video, that would be great!
Nice easy video to follow with good extras (recap the oil, add the gasket maker to the 10 points). Nice work! Going to do this project shortly!
Well done instructional video with just the right amount of detail. Great guidance on completing the valve cover gasket replacement. Cheers!
Followed this video to the letter. Fantastic help and job almost done. Will finish tomorrow
I appreciate your videos as a newbie, they're instructive and easy to follow along with the work your doing.
Yours was the first video I watched, and while my z4 has a different engine (n52), you gave me the courage to tackle this job! Thanks for the video!
Id suggest cross tightening the valve cover bolts from the middle out
I Really appreciate your videos. I have a Z4 too. And your video about excessive wind noise and painting the braking pads were awesome! Thank u. Keep uploading more, there are just few videos in about the Z4 in TH-cam. 👏🏼👏🏼
OMG, great job my friend, love the rapid show for incionsequential steps. You got it bud!
Great job, man. You made it look so easy.
Tony Starks It's not too hard if you got the right tools :)
Would you please list all the materials you used and tools needed?
This is my next list to do. I’ve noticed an oil leak just under the valve cover and I know now for sure I needed to replace the gasket.
Great video! Question: if the strut breaks off from the dome, how do you fix that? Does it need to be welded back on or is it better to install aftermarket triangle strut since it doesn't require the same connection?
Late comment. I save up old towels, shirts, etc. I use them as rags, or to lay parts on so they don’t get scratched. So instead of laying the valve cover on the ground, I lay it on an old shirt or towel (cotton). Once the rag gets too dirty, in the trash it goes.
Awesome! My husband just bought me a 2004 z4 and it needs the gasket valve covers replaced. This video gives me the confidence to do it myself! Did I miss the list of everything we’ll need for this? Just 15 covers and the gasket paste?
You did not mention what was the sealant you were going to buy from Walmart was for? Related to the gasket?
Thank you for saying the torque of the bolts
Great video. Thanks for doing this. Gives me confidence to do my e85. M54 rocker cover myself.
Do you have to buy new bolts or did you use old ones?
Did you follow the torque pattern while reassembling?
Very helpful. Great concise presentation.
can you do one replacing the seal for the oil filter housing?
Hi, the video does not indicate the 6 new plastic washers (under the lid). Where did you buy them? In a hardware store, BMW dealer ..... Thank you from Spain !!
Hola, en el vídeo no indica las 6 nuevas arandelas de plástico(las que hay debajo de la tapa). ¿Dónde las compró? En una ferretería, concesionario BMW..... Gracias desde España!!
It should have been part of the valve cover gasket set. If not, someone got in the package before you and took them.
How do you fix the underside leak? It is located under the driver seat
Hi there,
This is a great video. I started my Z4 Coupe this morning (2007, 63,000 miles) and noticed white smoke coming in to the cabin! I was alarmed, and opened all the windows and it went away.
I've been noticing a vague burning smell - I'd describe it almost like the smell of a glue gun, but a bit more toxic I'd guess. I haven't noticed any leaking, so I'll keep an eye out for that.
Does this sound like a possible valve gasket leak?
Valve gasket leak should smell like burning oil.. Not hot glue. Next time there's smoke id open up the engine bay and look around. You possibly have a burning plastic bag under your car stuck to the exhaust. That's my best guess since that happens a lot lol
+zed4me thanks for your response! I'll have a look for a bag. The odd thing this morning was the car was cold, I started it fresh and there was a whitish smoke in the cabin. Looked like it might have been coming through where I removed the sound deadening foam. Couldn't say for sure.
I replaced my spark plugs and ignition coils but as soon as I got done the cars engine bay as slowly been smoking! Do you if this would be the cause?! I also did not tighten the spark plugs at that pressure :/
nice job quick and easy....
What are the tools required to remove the parts on Z4 ?
When we started the car after this it idled up and down and wouldn't stop. What did I not do? I have a 2003 Z4
I was watching your valve cover gasket replacement and it was excellent. I have a comment. I am trying to remove the serpentine belt and must remove the front plastic cover. Would you please show me how to remove the plastic covert?
Sorry I no longer own this car
Great Video, I have a 2008 98.000 I notice a little bit of oil today under the car. I think I'll change the Valve cover gasket along with oil filter housing gasket.. As I heard these are they places for known leaks.. any tips or advice that you can give me?? Would you recommend othe maintenance that I should do since I have things apart.
Ronald Garcia nothing much just a good wipedown of any sludge you see while the engine is apart, especially on the valve cover
Great video! It may help to add an annotation with the torque specs for the crossbar. I'll look it up now. Also, if you change oil type, and notice smoke snagging from the passenger side hood, this lines up exactly with your picture! Best of luck with the Residency, hope you're past The Wall now!
Did you have to remove the spark plugs to remove the top?
No
Good detail
u should slap a biturbo on that empty space on the top left of the hood. lookin forward to seeing more project vid on ur z4
Nobody turbos these cars, but I may be purchasing a supercharger if the car lasts till residency and I can afford it.
+zed4me theres always a 1st time for everything n im lookin foward to that. consider me as a loyal subscriber 👍
Have you modified this car to increase bhp?
Nice some information from a gentleman who knows how to teach. Also, no silly jokes and profanity up for my little ones to hear.
I don't know much about BMW's at all, so I Iearned a few things in this video.
LastHumansGarage Glad you did!
zed4me LastHumansGarage two of the only car youtubers I subscribe to other than the smoking tire, and car throttle.
cj tantay It's an honor, CJ
Is this a N52 or M**(hehe 54)? seems different from my 3.0i. Wanna make sure b4 I go buy the parts.
This is M54
Thanks!
Thanks very much for doing this video.
What year generation was this? Before 2009 or after?
Before 2009; no turbos present.
Could any part of this service, or turning off check engine light short out the air compressor? I took my car in for this service and they returned it with a broken air compressor? It was in great shape and had no issues before hand. Seems more than a mear coincidence perhaps?
Alouatta MG unrelated as far as I know
zed4me thank you sir! Seemed odd it happened right then figured maybe their diagnostics shorted something out, but maybe not? Not a huge car guy
hello,
2.5i ? 3.0 ?
3.0i
Well done.
Thanks!
sweet
Nice
Called the dealer up and looking at 150 for all parts. Amazon has it for 30.
www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BY95RE0/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1494261951&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=bmw+valve+gasket+cover+set
did you get these parts from the dealer or somewhere else? should I trust non dealer sources?
Carl Vancer personal preference. you know the dealer stuff is gonna be OEM and legit. I personally go for whatever.. but have been bit by it in the form of parts sometimes not fitting, poor materials, etc.
zed4me agreed. nothing worse than being in a middle of a job and finding out that you can't complete due to bad fitting etc. Thanks for all the videos
