    RCR486 is a great example of "Doing It For The Art". There's really no point to this version existing, but the fact that it does is just amaze-o.

      @zoltan no, check the post mortem where he explains why he did that. He just needed to recharge battery, to play, explore, he did it as his “vacation”. So out of pure love for his hobby.

      @@hakimESC "I wanted to have a vacation from coding so I coded a game"
      Joking aside, different languages etc. It's still neat as hell that he did this.

      +sankunsama That's the thing. These days you have to pay through the nose for a 'limited special goatee edition' to get anything other than a DVD case and disc. Back in the day you would get stuff in the box as standard. I don't remember paying a premium for Infocom games and they were crammed with tidbits. Even my budget version of Pac Land came with a poster and badge. Bethesda can 'afford' whatever they damn well like, but it's all about squeezing every last penny of profit out of the consume these days. Grumble grumble, old man moan...

    Looks better than Rom City Rampage which isn't too surprising considering how much more powerful a 486 is than an NES. Kind of neat, Brian is an excellent programmer and he spent over a decade making RCR so it's not surprising that he wants to continue hacking at it but I hope he moves on to new projects, I'd like to see a new game from him. Hopefully it won't take a decade to come out though although at least he has the excuse of being a one man development team unlike someone else we know... *cough* 3dr *cough*.

    LGR, this is a beautiful thing to see! Wow, the commitment of the developer, he must be a real DOS-nerd, just like us! It's sad, there's so much focus these days on retro console gaming, which is far less interesting or varied in my opinion. You'll probably never see this comment, but: my goofy shoegaze band and I (when we were young and irresponsible rockers in the Melbourne indie scene 5 years ago) were big DOS nerds, so when we released our album we released the entire thing in MIDI on a floppy diskette! the handful of fans we had were really impressed and they lapped them up, though i doubt even one of them actually had the hardware to load them up. The floppy also included some horribly-compressed photos and animated gifs of our band

    Well Its time I pulled my Pentium 1 PC out of storage and open that old box of floppy disks!
    ... Until I remember my current PC doesn't have a floppy drive to copy the game files to...
    Then I will pull out my old windows 95 PC, which does have a flop drive!
    ... Until I realize that thing doesn't have drivers for my flash drives...
    Then I will pull out my blank CDs and burn the files on so I can transfer them that way!
    ... Until I remember my current PC doesn't have an optical drive ether...
    Alright alright, I'll just pull the 2GB hard drive out of the Windows 95 PC, and put it into my current PC which does have an IDE connector on the Mobo!
    ... Wait, my PSU doesn't have a molex plug, and I forgot where I put the spare cables...
    This is harder then I expected.

      I had a floppy drive connector in my motherboard until a couple of years ago. When I realized my new motherboard wouldn't have one (and honestly, did I really want one anyway?) I dug through all of my old floppies to see if there was anything interesting backed up. The closest I got was a floppy that contained a story I wrote, "the alien attack".
      Anyway, I connected the floppy drive and dd-ed the image. Perfect! But as it turns out I cleverly enabled some Windows 98 disk compression on it. Long story short, I had to grab myself a technically illegal Win 98 VirtualBox image, because I had neither the old Windows 3.11 floppy disks nor the Windows 98 update CD-ROM at my disposal. (Both are safe and sound at my parents' place.) I was then able to mount the floppy disk in virtual Windows 98 and extract the files onto a second (uncompressed) disk image, because I couldn't quickly figure out any other way to get files out of the VM.
      PS I just bought a USB cassette player. Fingers crossed.

      Frenziefrenz windows 98 had a utility called Drive Space. I used that back in the day too. No problems at that time (year 2000s) becouse all people had win95, 98 or ME and i could read my floppy everywere. When i got winxp i had to uncompress all my floppys, becouse microsoft dropped drivespace. Too bad really. Drive space was really nice for removable media.
      For some time i tried to copy drivespace program from win98 to xp, but it didnt work.

    • @Frenziefrenz
      @Frenziefrenz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if it'd have worked on Win 95 'cause now that you mention it I think it was DriveSpace 2 or 3. ;-)

    Oh man, this was just great. You get it. *you get it*. Yeah you can play a newer, slicker, more polished version of something, but that's not the point. It's the sheer novelty of seeing something recreated through digital witchcraft on an older/less optimal platform. This review really made me happy, honest it did.

  • @Larry
    @Larry 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It's nice to see it running on a 486, but the only issue really is it still is using NES style graphics, if this was a genuine port from back in the day, it definitely wouldn't look like this compared to the original, they would have used the PC's own advantage, colour schemes Etc.
    Yes I know that's not what he was going for, but it would have been cool to see a port look like what it would have.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There _are_ PC graphics modes in the game, as I showed at 02:52!
      Also, there were plenty of ports to PC back in the day that looked close to their original intended system. Games were often ported over from the ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, NES, Megadrive and the like, which more or less kept their original look intact due to artistic choice and/or lazy porting :)
      Furthermore, this DOES use the PC's color palette and capabilities. It's a straight-up MS-DOS executable that is restricted to what a machine of the era could do. Aesthetic choices were all over the place for 256-color DOS games back then, many of which emulated the look and feel of the NES, and I don't see this as any particular exception!

    • @Larry

      Lazy Game Reviews
      But it definitely wouldn't look like this at the time. They could barely fathom 2 way scrolling back then, let alone 256.
      I mean look at the PC port of Mega Man compared to the NES original.

    I just ordered a new DOS game for my newly restored 486 laptop!
    To bad it is most obscure laptop ever. I think you would like it.
    While you collecting big bulky PC, I prefer collecting laptops, though that have a side effect of having no information about released products, as laptops generally less adopted compare to big PC, meaning supporting them also more difficult.
    Also you might find it amusing, but I got my hands on world best 486 CPU! I am not gonna tell you which one, please try to guess it.

    Nice choice with the beige floppy. I actually had that in the cart and was ready to purchase it, but I had forgotten about it and the price went up to $40. That's too much IMO. I had already bought the physical disc and cart for the PS4 & PS Vita, respectively, along with digital downloads for the PS3 & 3DS, so another $40 for the floppy didn't seem like a good idea. .. .. .. It's a shame about the lack of sound card support.

    I never played this on DOS. I recall it being out for the NES though. I also see it out on the eshop, very tempting to pick it up.

    That's pretty awesome.I have the game on PS3/PS vita.
    i think we may have a computer, stored somewhere in the basement, that has a disk reader.Though I still have some floppy, that I could copy the game onto, but they aren't high-density...

    Have you considered reviewing "Shakedown: Hawaii" from Vblank? It is a 16 bit spiritual successor to retro city rampage made by the same developer, but it takes it's comic material from modern business practices and video game mechanics. It was even released on a limited edition physical copy.

    Oh and speaking of Doom. I have a copy of it on my Kodak DC-260 digital camera from 1998. It runs great. MAME also runs great with a few games. :)

    This is so fucking cool, I'd almost argue it's cooler than Dreamcast homebrews, but that's where my bias lies for days I longed for a Dreamcast. This is still fucking awesome! :D

    I still have a USB floppy drive. something I won't let go of as my last shred of beige box nostalgia. I need to acquire or build another Dos computer and go find some old games. Those were magic times, which I don't feel that much of any more.

  • @mrbigmouth502

    How much space does it actually use on the floppy? I think it would be neat if they managed to squeeze in adlib or OPL3 sound support. Anyway, I think it's pretty awesome that they managed to pull this off, with more stuff going on and a higher framerate than most DOS games to boot.

    Holy shrek, this amazing... Makes me wish I could code even more, because there's a game idea I have and one of the things I'd like to do with it is port it to systems I'd think couldn't even run it (but do it anyway).
