  • Special Thanks to Loci Watches for giving the watch to the channel:

    A few months ago an interesting brand reached out to me. One that was approaching their designs a little differently. As they wanted their watches to be inspired and try to capture the essence of specific locations in the world. Since the brand Lōcī’ is based in California, they started with some iconic locations along the Pacific Coast Highway.

    I’m also a California native and I think this is a uni line of watches as well. I agree the price for what you get (or not….a bracelet) is a bit steep. I’m definitely gonna keep my eyes on this brand.

    As a Los Angeles based watch enthusiast, I definitely like them, but a little out of my price range. I have to believe many of your viewers share my sentiment which is, I can save up for something like this, and it’s going to take some time, but for the money, there are SO many other watches I would get. Still great watches. Probably plenty of celebrities out here who surf (or are wannabe surfers) who would be interested. Thanks!

    It's a very interesting watch, nicely done dial. When I traveled around the US way back in 2004 I drove a lot of this highway and you don't exaggerate when you say it's beautiful Shane. It truly is breathtaking. The strap suits this watch nicely too. The way the side of the crown matches the dial is very cool.

    I like the design, and think that the look it really solid. Price is a little high, but SW200 + giving money to a charity makes sense as to why it's nearly $1100. It's not for me, but I can appreciate it a lot more than many other microbrand watches.

    Out of my price range, but I stayed the course just because I enjoy your presentations -- and having a narrator my poor ears can actually understand. Nice-looking watch. The elevated indices and the finishing and lines of the case remind me of my Oceanus 200. Nice to hear Vaer mentioned, too: I have three of theirs and like them very much. Good wishes to Loci, even though it's in the "California" price tier.

    Great review! Beautiful watch, though I'm probably not going to purchase either the automatic or quartz versions unless they are discounted in the future. However, I really do like the tie-in to various geographic sites; it's one of the aspects of Islander watches that I appreciate, having grown up on Long Island. As an aside: one can never tell with brand names, but the term for multiple locations is usually pronounced low-sigh.

    Got to make a sneaky question. Lately i see many american brands using SW200, instead of japanese ones. Has this something to do with justifying the price increase, although there is a tax treaty among these two countries(!!!) ? Seems weird... plus i guess it makes earnings profit tad better (and quality, still supports the "american assembly/higher level" theme too...).
    As for the "grand" price thing, i think it's becoming universal. Inflation is all over, luxury items like watches don't have a chance getting away with it. Not even chinese brands do these days. Prices creep up there too, fast indeed.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not sure. I would think there would be a similar treaty to Japanese goods, but who knows. Could just be the trend. I've heard a few brands mention wanting to stay with Miyotas as they think they are more reliable.

    Having spent much time in my life along the PCH, from San Diego to Huntington, along the Central and Big Sur coasts, and Monterey Bay... I love the concept. But, for me, the implementation doesn't catch the vibe or sense or atmosphere of those places.
    The Monterey Bay version is closest, but really, is that the watch I'd wear on Carmel's main beach? Capitola or Santa Cruz? Hardly. The Lodge at Pebble Beach maybe, but that's not me. Or most people.
    IMO, a PCH Watch should be a true sports watch, with physical attributes appropriate to the actual California coast lifestyle.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When I think back to my days in SoCal, I think it would be hard to nail down one design or style that represents California. Part of the beauty of the area is that there is a little bit of everything. But like you said... I think the more important thing is the physical attributes. A watch that ready for just about anything.. skiing, surfing, hiking, nice dinner...

    • @rbsafe
      @rbsafe 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RelativeTime Building on what you said... I'm imagining a watch that has the waves, trench, and color ques of the Monterey Bay but also brings in function.
      Such as, if I were a scientist at the MB Aquarium, out on a research boat, or a diver on same, or a surfer in Santa Cruz, what functions would I need?
      Certainly water resistance and durability. A scientist might also need GMT time for logging data. So I'm thinking a GMT watch with excellent dive capability.
      Do all that and -now- you've got a beautiful, appropriate, and functional PCH Monterey Bay watch.
      Or am I overthinking this as usual :)
