    Recently got an 83 Silver Spur. After replacing the injectors, rebuilding the fuel distributor, and replacing the air springs I have a great running smooth riding automobile. The car gets so many thumbs up. The car is actually rather easy to work on and not very expensive with some help from TH-cam I fully understood the workings of the fuel injection system as well as the rear suspension.

      Congratulations on your new Spur. I'm not super mechanical, and don't have any of the necessary tools. The car had a host of "delayed maintenance" issues that have to be sorted. The last time I drove it, it konked out in highway traffic; cause yet to be determined, possibly fuel pump. I was able to nurse it along to my destination. It gets towed to the mechanic later this week.

    I have been the Custodian of an '89 Bentley Turbo R for four years now . This Spring , I'm moving up to a Rolls-Royce . I have enough experience in dealing with the maintenance of these cars and their expensive nature . My yearly maintenance budget was $ 5,000.00 . The third year was the most expensivest at $ 4,000.00 . But a lot was done , all fluids changed . I went to 10W40 semi-synthetic oil with 12 ounces of CAMGUARD additive.Replaced distributor belt , rebuilt 1 hydraulic pump , trans fluid and filter , axle oil change . The car has 2 issues , passenger seat ECU and the cruise control doesn't engage . I'm fine with both . I'm shopping for an '80 Wraith or , 98-99 Silver Seraph ? Maybe , an '89 Silver Spur ?

    • @dslociceroarchitect
      @dslociceroarchitect  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tough decision. I'm partial to the older vehicles. I considered a '78 Wraith, but it had too many issues. I know that the '87-''90 20,000 series Spirits/Spurs are considered the most desirable of the Spirts/Spurs. So maybe the 89 Spur. But you'd still want "the right one".

I have a windshield cover that I use when I have to park it outside. Fixing the cosmetic issues, like the buckling leather on the dash and parcel shelf, is on the list of things to do after the mechanical issues are all paid for. Hello from the UK. I too own a 1986 Spirit ( not Spur) the last year they made them in this country with carburettor, but I think they introduced fuel injection earlier than that in the States. Is yours fuel injected?
    My car is Georgian Silver with slate grey interior and I had an LPG system fitted. This is a slightly contentious issue as it takes away authenticity, yet my wish was to drive it on a much cleaner fuel and a very much cheaper one too.
    The tank sits where the spare wheel would be housed and hold about 70 usable litres or above 150 miles. The petrol tank remains unaltered so there are many more miles in possible range.
    Ownership for me has proved a mixed blessing over my 6 years of ownership, mainly a very expensive exercise but the car has got under my skin. I want to keep it running, improve it over time and bequeath it to my son. He already has my extremely rare Citroën ID 19 which fascinatingly shares one or two oleopneumatic components with the RR even though it 24 years older. ( as we know Rolls Royce bought the rights to incorporate the Citroën self levelling function on the Shadow, which came out in 1965)
    Being a Californian car I imagine yours isn’t affected by rust but more by sun damage. Our cars rust and I’ve spent many £1000s on bodywork.
    What did the engine “ failure to proceed “ issue turn out to be?
    Best wishes from UK.

    • @dslociceroarchitect
      @dslociceroarchitect  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Paul. My Spur has fuel injection. 86 was the first year it was offered here in the US. There are quite a few purists in the Rolls-Royce community, but I think converting your car to run on LPG seems like a smart move. We are thinking about getting a hybrid or electric car to off-set the carbon we put into the air driving Roz. I've had the car 6 months, and it has spent about half of that time at the mechanic. First, getting a once over and addressing the safety and urgent items; second, addressing the failure to proceed.
      Re: the failure to proceed: the mechanic was never able to duplicate the problem. It was stalling in traffic as if it was running out of gas, but it would start right up. Mechanic checked the fuel pumps, relays, fuel accumulator and all were fine. They did find that there was no record of the fuel filter being changed, it had the wrong spark plugs in it and two of them were fouled. So they replaced the spark plugs, replaced the fuel filter, flushed and cleaned the fuel lines, and it is running even better than before.
      I have already invested about 40% of what I paid for it in repairs and maintenance. We've got several thousand dollars more worth of items to work down the list of maintenance issues it had when I got it. But I had budgeted for that, knowing that the price I paid meant it would need work done.
      The original buyer was smart, and ordered the car without the Everflex roof. It appears it was also garage kept for most if not all of it's life, so the sun damage isn't too bad, just a little fading and shrinkage of the leather on the dash and parcel shelf. The wood veneers are all in good shape.
      Cheers!

      Yes, I do still have it. It's been 3 years since I bought it. I've worked with my mechanic to get it back into shape from it's condition when I bought it, and now I can drive it without fear of "failing to proceed". I use it a couple times a week to go to the post office and take the dog to the park, and on the weekends for longer (60-100 mile) drives. My next DIY project is to clean and condition the leather.

      This car's odometer is not working. Based on the CarFax report it probably had about 66k miles on it when I bought it. I've put another 1200 miles on it since I got it. The Spirits/Spurs built before the middle of 1987 cost less, in general, than the cars built from the middle of 87 to the end of 89. I've seen them as low as $12,000, and as much as $27,000, depending on the condition. The seller was asking $19k. I paid less than asking, but I've also since put an additional $6k into immediate repairs and delayed maintenance. I expect it will need a further $4k - $5k to get it back in prime mechanical and cosmetic condition - and to get the odometer working again!
