Cold Start of the old Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit...

  • Hello and welcome back to Automotive Tales. Today we're taking a first look at our Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit and waking it from a 6 month slumber with a cold start, a very cold start.
    So we're starting to get her up and running ready for Spring. We did this last year and only achieved one outing, but we're hoping 2021 we can get more use from the RR.
    What you're looking at here is a very early, 1981, Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, with the characteristic SZ chassis that ran under both the Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands from 1980 right through until the last of the Bentley Turbo RT models in 1999 - 19 years is a long time for any chassis to stay in production! She has the obligatory 6 and three quarter litre v8, with twin SU carbs and a 3 speed GM gearbox, now running full stainless steel exhaust pipes (as mild steel units were unavailable last spring when we needed to replace the exhaust for the MOT).
    We're giving her a cold start to warm her through and check everything is in order, specifically the Citroen derived hydraulic suspension which worked a charm as you will see in the video
    Check back for more updates on the Rolls-Royce as we have a few issues to address before the spring/summer season is upon us, and we'll do a bit about the trip we took the car on to Le Mans and the chaos that went with it!
    Check us out on 'all' social media platforms

    I was in England in 81, with the US Air Force. Saw a couple of these at a dealership in Oxford. They had yet to be imported into the US. The salesman was overjoyed to be able to show a yank these beauties even though there was no chance I would I would/could buy one. I still have the brochure. Friendly sales staff. Beautiful car. I remember the paint was incredible and looked a mile thick.

      I wish I could say the same for the paint these days, but then I believe it has had a repaint at some point in its working life which was likely not done to Rolls-Royce's exacting standards. It looks good from 10ft though!

    Great cars, I recently sold our 86 spirit, she was a two owner car, 78k miles, I used her on my trips to London and it never let me down, the spots to look at are the rear spring hangers as they always rot through, and always check the hydraulic fluids, people have a habit of using the wrong fluids and it buggers up the system.
    Unfortunately she had to go as two Rolls Royce cars do have a habit of emptying the wallet.........
    Lovely video, great work

      You're not wrong there Russ - the Duchess (as she is affectionately known here) is not a cheap date! We've a couple of episodes on the way about the annual MOT and minor repairs to keep her in top condition... empty my wallet certain feels. But, worth it for the experience of my specialist who continues to remind me I snagged a good car! Spring cups at the rear appear good and the hydraulic system has a clean bill of health for now (after some repairs in 2019 to cure the 'gangster lean' thanks to a failed self levelling valve mind you)
      Glad you enjoyed the video! Lots more to come I hope! :)

    I have enjoyed your video's due to my interest in clasic cars, I have 3 bentley's and one of them is a T2 which I purchased recentley as a daily driver. My thinking to use a clasic car as a daily driver was based on the fact that most new cars are to firmly sprung and lack an option list that is not part of a packaged. Also my budget for a new car was about £40K and I reckon that in 3 years I will lose half of that so my T2 becomes a free car with an unknown value and although the fuel bill will be high there is no road tax and the insurance is cheap. With regard to the interior of your Rolls be very careful about touching up the leather as I also have a Jaguar 420G with which the previous owner had restored the leather (painted) and one stuck to it in warm weather, I had to have it fully retrimmed. Keep em coming.

    • @byteme9718
      @byteme9718 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a T2, the car every Silver Shadow aspires to be. That's what my Shadow II tells me anyway.
      All leather is painted and the hides used on your Jaguar will have been all painted to achieve the coloured finish from Connolly. People later use all kind of crap to "improve" appearance but pretty much everything can be removed and a new colour system applied that in most cases will be superior to the original cellulose based material.

    I used to work on used cars in the U.S. If we had valve lifter noise the first thing we did was add a can of STP oil treatment. Not sure if it is made any more. It was a VERY thick honey type oil that would clear up tappet noise 99% of the time. Just be sure to have the engine running and the can of STP warm when adding it to the crankcase, otherwise it will take a long time to empty the can.

    • @byteme9718

    Just saw your video. Very interesting! I am kind of relieved (I probably shouldn't) to hear the engine tapping noise... I've got a 1978 Silver Shadow 2 which does it so much at cold start, it almost sounds like a diesel engine. When the engine reaches temperature, the tapping noise eventually gets much lower but never entirely disappears. Not long ago I realized that last time it had the engine oil changed, they put 10W30 instead of 10W40, I wonder if that makes it worse. I am not too comfortable with the idea of having to open the engine to change a tappet or two, the cost of the entire operation really seems excessive to me...

    • @automotivetales
      @automotivetales  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They do tap a lot and the thicker oil might help keep it quiet down - they are (as I understand) derived from aero engines where they are designed to run for long periods of time so tend to be a little rough when they are cold until they are warmed through. As long as the noise goes away once its warmed through I wouldn't be worried. the suspension pumps are noisy too from a cold start so worth bearing that in mind.

    • @byteme9718
      @byteme9718 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@automotivetales I suggest you don't give advice on topics you know nothing about. The V8 engine has nothing to do with aviation and should run well from cold. There is no suspension pumps although the rearmost one feeds the rear suspension in addition to the brakes. The pumps should not be excessively noisy from cold, just a light tapping when building pressure and then silence.

    Hai, I am an independent classic and specialist cars trader based in the Republic of Ireland and also in possesion of a very similar 1982 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit that I acquired in 2018 from Belfast, Northern Ireland, so it's also a U.K. car first registered by some lady in Birmingham. I am looking forward to getting the bodywork and mechanicals done on it, but just can't seem to find a legitimate business that could sincerely undertake this project.
    A moderator of the Rolls-Royce and Bentley owners' club did suggest that the U.K. would be the best bet for it. Please advise if, what, where and roughly what could it cost.

      I haven't as yet had any bodywork done on the Rolls (or the as yet un-disclosed SZ car) but the chap I use is Duane at Starmans in Market Bosworth in the UK. He has a bodyshop he uses that recently did a Camargue which came back looking astonishing! As for the nouse, I know Flying Spares (also in Market Bosworth) keep stock of a stainless exhuast system which is quite nice for these engines. They are close to standard so not boomy or loud, but release a little more noise. Mine was a bit 'raspy' once first installed but now its bedded in (ie it has a nice layer of carbon deposit on the inside surface) it waffles nicely.

    Horrible sounding when cold. Ticky-tick-tock, but might have been the audio set up.. Nice interior though. Garage kept, for sure. Loved the well insulated bonnet/hood.

      They are surprisingly noisy when cold - so as one of the other comments pointed out, that ticking is not the tappets but actually the pump for the hydraulic suspension and brake assist and it does go away as the car warms through and the suspension rises. Having it out in the warm weather we’ve just had, it’s quiet and tap free 😀

    U need a new fuel pump & starter plus alternators😮

    • @automotivetales
      @automotivetales  ปีที่แล้ว

      Start is fine... the alternator did turn out to be toast - we ended up replacing it in 2022 and it seems to be rock solid now, even with ligths, wipers, radio, and phone charger all on so hopefully thats one job off the list. Fuel pump hasn't given me any issues aside being a little noisy.

      It’s not SO bad, once the choke knocks off and the idle speed drops off, and now the stainless pipes have bedded in, it’s quite quiet. 🙂

      For insurance yes, but road tax not yet, it does depend on when the build date is and I suspect it just misses the cut for 2021... 2022 however will be a road tax free year hopefully!

      Tough choice!! I think the perversion of driving a 6.75ltr v8 ULEZ free tickles me the most! I expect I need to do this before we go back to Hampton Court Palace in September as that is inside the ULEZ zone now I think!

      it really does sound like that but its actually the accumulator pump for hte brakes / suspension hydraulics. I've had it checked out by Rolls Yoda and its correct - its silky smooth once its warmed up :)

      @@automotivetales Still not normal. Noisy brake pumps were a common complaint on early cars. They also suffered from seizing and rapid mineral oil use due to outsourcing of machining.

      That’s generally the pump for the hydraulic pump and does go quiet once the car has warmed through and self levelled - it’s super quiet to drive around with no tapping noises at all. These engines are actually quiet agricultural on cold start which seems common from others I’ve seen

    It was 100% british built Rolls Royce original engine not based on crappy American engines in any way. Please dp your homework before commenting on Rolls Royce, particularly classics. Best to delete the channel if you can't get things right or it's just misinformation which TH-cam bans channels for.

      Thanks for the feedback. I’ll take 3 years of work off line because I got a fact wrong. I do hope you are perfect in everything you do. What Rolls-Royce do you drive and what engine does it have and what are its origins?

      @automotivetales I drive a 1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and have done so for a very long time. I also know RRs inside out and have done so for most of my life. You definitely need to delete and read a bit, then come back. I don't criticise unless I can back it up. Bye bye 👋
