That riff from Chick Corea’s “Spain,” played between the solos and as part of the head, is as catchy as it is tricky. Ari gets frequent requests for help on that section, so she breaks it down, step by step, in this episode of “Talking Technique”

Though I could play bass when I was a high school band director, I never sat down to figure out how to play this on bass. I can kill it on trumpet...after a lot of work. I first played this as a drummer in high school. My bass players could play this but I do not think this was the way they did it. Now that I teach orchestra, I play through all the parts before I teach it. It helps a ton. This will be fun. Thanks. CP

Really good tutorial! I totally agree with the approach to study a song, break in parts and play slowly to go deep in the “feel” of the song, that´s an efficient method to study! Thank you for sharing your experience!

I have taught this tune to multiple ensembles, and each and every one enjoyed it immensely. Being an amateur bass player, I will choose to just read from the pdf to learn it. Listening to you teach the phrase to non-readers makes me appreciate being able to read so much. This tune rocks being played by a 200+ piece marching band who can swing. Such a joy!

It is a joy! Thanks for watching and commenting. I am not teaching it necessarily to non-readers, here, though. My point is rather to appreciate the intricate groupings and to get the rhythm into the body. Reading is a vital skill. Keep it groovy, Dave!

Although this is a great way of explaining, I think this is not the least economical way. It can be taught differently by just aiming for the easiest way to play, costing the least amount of effort, hence be having the "best" economy of motion.
If you want I could show you a slap-double pluck version of this exact lick, which sounds cool.

Going to take this to the shed on acoustic bass. Hope to add part or all to my warmup since I’m saturated on YT: ‘Loef Bass.” Great lesson thanks Ari!

Captain fingers by Lee Ritenour is a major bass headache. I believe it was Anthony Jackson the played the bass on it.

I need to work this out somehow, but I’m almost offended by how anyone can call this riff ”memorable”. 🤯 This is only memorable in the way that it’s the well-recognizeable spot where you completely lose track of where you are in the rhythm already in the second bar (or third, depending on how you interpret it), and the diarrhea of off-rhythm notes just keep flowing for another 10 bars. But anyhow, nice to find this lesson, I’ll give it a shot. (Viewing this at slower speed helps a lot btw).

Update: Actually, I did manage to play this whole riff now, thanks to this video and the transcription behind the link (the upper part, which makes more sense to me). The method of breaking the riff down as described @4:26 onwards worked, but I also had to view the video in both 0,5x and 0,75x speed to be able to catch all the notes and the rhythm without getting lost. I'm not up to speed yet and honestly I don't know if I'll ever be, but anyway I'm more than happy having learned this intricate riff in its entirety, albeit in a slower tempo (max 110). Thank you for this video!

Hello : First time I've seen you. Subscribed & Liked. I just bought a Fender Jazz Bass. I played years ago with a pick. Now I'm going to play without the pick. I was wondering what Video you would recommend to learn to use my Thumb along with my fingers. I saw a guy play like that and really like it. Thanks and will be watching. :)

Cheers Terry, thank you for watching and commenting. I don't recommend that technique as your main go-to routine. i think it is cool for special applications such as solo bass or similar, but I recommend plucking index middle with good posture and minimal tension. it gives you the best tone for most groove applications. Here are a few vids that deal with RH tech, but I will also make one dedicated to the right hand. www.notreble.com/buzz/2017/11/20/talking-technique-switching-drills-for-4-5-and-6-string-basses/ www.notreble.com/buzz/2016/06/06/talking-technique-right-hand-thumbs-up/ www.notreble.com/buzz/2016/04/11/talking-technique-killer-dead-note-grooves/

yeah, it's "crazy" what people do to entertain themselves, init? I'm curious to hear your explanation for your somewhat cryptic comment. Could it be that you got mixed up by cut time vs common time (4/4) notation?

Not an easy tune on trumpet but there is no double tonguing. Just way sick fingerings.
