  • Welcome to Part 3 of my Tamiya FF-03 Build Guide, where I take you through steps 15 to 27 of the build manual. The major components we will work on are the rear suspension subframe, including the top and bottom arms, the CVA Oil Shocks and the completion of the front suspension mechanism, which includes all the workings for the unique inboard suspension. We also install the body posts.
    I hope you enjoy it, I think this really is a special Tamiya kit, and I am enjoying the build process immensely! Hopefully you will follow along the next steps with me on part 4.
    When finished this will become the Tamiya FF-03 Honda Civic Type-R.

    That front end suspension is very intricate indeed! Were those e clips stubborn to put on the shock shafts?

      Hiya Jeremy! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. Yeah the inboard front setup is a bit fiddly, it feels lovely and smooth but I will have to wait to drive it until I can tell if it's any good! Nah, the e-clips were not too bad - I only had ONE shoot across the room! :))

    Hey Mark
    This a very nice and interesting kit. What I’m perplexed about is the request that you drill the droop screw and grub screw holes. I don’t want to sound picky , but?!
    Tamiya have always been known for basically being able build the kit with your own screw driver and that’s about it. Very youth friendly. I think the drilling component is maybe removing the unspoken age rating to an adult based kit. Not a lot of kids are drill savvy and would tend to drill right through, well at least once 🤣.
    As I said really like the kit, the counter lever suspension is very plush and I would consider buying the kit. Just couldn’t recommend it for an unsupervised build. There might end up being some 3mm holes in fingers. I find this a strange move by Tamiya. I know that arm reamers are quite popular to loosen up the suspension arms put that’s a hand tool and more for the racers. Yeah just strange design that could already be pre done from factory, unless there’s a reason such as the wheel base length? 👍🤓🇦🇺

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul - yes it really is a fantastic kit, a real step up from the entry level Tamiyas - notice all the machine screws instead of self-tapping screws and all the metal pivots and links. Very much like the XV-01. On that point, the XV-01 also has those A-arms and hubs that need to be drilled out. Mate, I have no idea why! As you say, they could have easily pre-formed the holes, just like the other holes in the plastic parts! It just doesn't make sense - the age-rating may be a factor, it does say over 14 only on the box. I don't think the wheelbase is a factor, that is adjusted by the position of the rear suspension assembly only. Damn strange, mate! :)

    • @paulgarwood192
      @paulgarwood192 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Bryan RC The XV-01 I tried to grab one of these earlier on in the quarantine and couldn’t get much, certainty not with the body I was after (can’t remember, which). All I could get at the time was rollers or super expensive Subaru VX. Actually they were not even rollers, as they did not come with wheels and tyres. They were the “pro” kit. $350 AUD plus shipping from Hong Kong. Then you had to add all of the gear to make it go!🤣 I think I wanted the Lancia, but would have settled for the rally Subaru (WRX?). So it was around the $500 range then I had to add electrics, servo and TX, without putting in a motor, without paint etc.
      The reason I’m a bit antsy about the drilling is I have a 16 (almost) daughter, and I know that I could give her a kit and she could do 90% without much if any assistance. We brought her up that way, to be independent and able to fix and assemble items. But adding the drill into the scenario means I need to be there! I imagine that a lot of other parents would feel the same.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul - I paid about 400aud for my XV01, it came with the body and Johnson motor, no ESC. I think that was a good deal but they are considerably cheaper in mainland Europe. I like the Subaru WRX version, and that seems to be cheaper too. Trouble is, most suppliers are out of stock at the moment. I agree that most parents would supervise their children with a power tool, but these holes are so small they could easily be made with a hand drill or hand reamer. That said, it would also be easy to drill too deep or make the hole too wide! :)

      Haha - I was lucky - I only had one e-clip shoot away as I tried to fit it, but luckily it ended up in the empty RC box that was on the floor! I got a little box of spare e-clips just in case! :))

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya Carmine! Yeah, I needed to fill the shocks first but the pistons were too short to allow me to fill them with the rod in the o-rings first. A finger did the trick!
      I didn't use any grease on the bushes, they are a sintered brass material that should have self-lubricating properties, they moove very freely and smoothly without grease.
      Hope you can get one, be great for you to get a new toy - fingers crossed mate! :)

    Evening matey. Another great episode in your build series. I do that thing of sticking my finger under the shock before filling it with oil. I have got another theory about the rebound thing but I need to draw diagrams and it a bit nerdy. Anyway what a bizarre but cool suspension setup. I'm not sure if it's better that just having vertical shocks above the suspension arms but it does look cool. Hope you are having a good Friday. Mine is good so far as beer and of course your latest video were involved. We are going out tomorrow night in honour of my birthday which is next Tuesday. We are going to a couple of the local ale pubs with some chums. I am planning a beer related video which may or may not end up on my channel depending on how much of a spanner I look! Take it easy mate 😃

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers my mate! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. So you do the finger trick too? Works a treat doesn't it? Love to see that nerdy diagram - and hear the theory. As for the suspension, it is silky smooth but as you say, not sure how it can be better than a standard setup - plus the weight is shifted higher but also a little more central. We will see when I run it, hoping to compare it with a 4WD car. Friday was the usual boozy chill that I enjoy so much! Sounds like a great Saturday lined up for you, enjoy the ale and the good company, hope to see a boozy video soon!
      Happy Birthday for Tuesday young man, I'll be raising a glass to you my friend! :))

      @@MarkBryanRC yeah the other thing I do if I'm changing the piston top on a previously constructed shock and don't want to lose the oil is to stick it on a blob of blu-tac while I fiddle with the C clips. Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing the body shell on this one. How are you getting on with it? I'm just getting myself ready to go out. RC tomorrow with Ric and Pete. The forecast is changeable! You started already - cool! Yeah, I think you made a good call, although I just tried out the ball diff with some power from the motor, the limited slip functions well - let's hope it holds up. The oil filled diff is proven to be bullet-proof though mate - yours should be silky smooth! Enjoy the build! :))

    • @BenAppleTre
      @BenAppleTre 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkBryanRC Hi Mark, it was all going swimmingly until I ran into a major problem on step 12!!! No amount of coersion would allow the front motor/diff assembly to slot into the receiving section on the chassis :-( So first I tried to remove the suspension IXD thingy so I could slide it in, no luck. Second was to loosen the M6 part in step 3 so it was like a hinge, no joy there either! I thought I'll have to take the whole bleedin' assembly apart and go back to the ball diff in part 1. Brainwave moment at 1am - I studied the FF03R manual and noticed that the K11 part looked a little different in order to accommodate the wider gear diff housing there was less material on the front part that you screw into through M6. As you have shown in your TT02S suspension mod, out with the sharp hobby knife to remove some material from both sides... This saved the day and while not a perfect fit it's 99% ok as also held together in so many spots this shouldn't stress anywhere. Actually the manual for the R version says to do this in step 6!!! But I wouldn't have had the confidence or thought to do this without learning from your/Rob's videos, all good now & going to start on Bag B this afternoon... Cheers :-)
