  • Finally the Tamiya FF-03 Honda Civic Type-R is finished! In this part I complete the trickiest part of the build, the body! It took a long time to get this one right, and I had a few problems along the way, as you will see!
    I'm sorry that this video is so long, but I do spend a lot of time waffling about all the issues with this body! But it was well worth the effort, I think this RC looks stunning in the pearlescent white Tamiya paint, and the included light buckets look a treat with the LEDs installed. I hope you enjoy this final video of my FF-01 build series, please leave a message or ask any questions in the comments. Keep safe and enjoy your RCing! :)

    Ah you jammy git Mark you made that look so easy 😃😜 years of experience I dare say 😂👍🏻 loved this build from start to finish, quite an unusual chassis from Tamiya but wow it looks really trick what with that front suspension and clever steering jig. Thanks for all you tips tricks hints with this FF03 build really informative and dead easy to follow, your not a teacher are you ? You’d be great at it as you have an accent and tone that I could listen to all day long. Anyway thanks again Mark, take care, stay safe 😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Hehe - thanks, Kenneth! Yes, I have done 1 or 2 Tamiya bodies! I must say, I have got better over the last couple of years, and if I dare to show how to do one on TH-cam, I better make a decent job of it or I'll get slated! Yes, this is a quirky Tamiya, but I like something a little different. How did you guess? Yes, I am a support teacher in a primary school - lot's of practice in explaining things. Thanks for your very kind words, I really do appreciate it. Take care, too, my friend. :-)

    I use soapy water in a spray bottle to spray both the peeled decals and the body so its easier to line up and use a cotton bud to remove all the excess water while drying with a hair dryer+also conforms and stretch the decals to any curved body panels, works really well so far on all my tamiya bodies

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info and advice - yeah a few other people have recommended similar techniques, it does sound like a great way of doing it. Trouble is I'm worried about messing a new body up so I stick to the way I know works. Fingers crossed one day I will be brave enough to give it a go! All the best from Mark... :)

    When I cut out lexan shells I run a craft knife around the arches/edges, score it a few times it snaps out with a clean cut, nice vid, want to get this kit to replicate my actual car, I got a Civic type R fn2 for real, would give me something to do especially at the moment! Nice build vid!

    I reckon ANY later model Car is going to be nothing but extremely fiddly to apply DECKALS!! 😖😖😖😖😖
    So many intricate contours and creases. I CRINGED when that Sticker RIPPED!!!! 😳😳 OMG!
    Fortunately that's only happened to me once... But my outcome was nowhere near as nice as yours was. That took skill Mate...
    And you have that!
    The Pearl looks so good. 👍👍 I've never done a White Car before, but I would definitely consider that!!
    It was funny... When you placed on the clear Body, it looked like the Chassis was backwards!!!
    I am so fascinated by that Car. I have to have one somehow.
    Can't wait to see her RUN!!! 😁

      Thanks for such a thoughtful comment, mate!
      Yeah, modern cars have awkward contours! And when the sticker ripped, you probably heard from my tone how pissed I was!
      Yeah the pearl looks peachy, glad I chose it, will look better if I get some sun to shine on it! And now you say it - I had to look TWICE every time I sat the body on the chassis - it looks so back-to-front!
      Cheers again bro - all the best from Mark... :)

This FF03 is a beautiful discovery, thank you for sharing it. I hope everything's all right with you and your family. Here in the north of France things are complicated and sometimes hard to bear. • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much Are. Love the body, I think it's a modern classic, so different when it was first released. I had the Civic that was released just before this one (Type-S 1.8 V-Tech) and that was a screamer! I remember doing an indicated 140mph with 5 of us in the car on the M42 (don't tell the police!) Cool you got one of these Hondas.
      Yeah, I prefer to cut really close to the lines with scissors and get rid of the excess clear sticker. Good choice with the PS-57, I can tell you it looks awesome when the light shines on it!
      All the best my friend, hope you are keeping well in these difficult times! :)

    I love building the cars but hate doing bodywork. I wish Tamiya would sell pre cut and painted shells. Currently building the Renault 5. I’ve cut the shell perfectly but know I’ll mess up the paint job.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rich! Yeah, the bodywork is an acquired taste - I only got into it after a few builds, but if you take it slowly it's not that bad - I'm sure you'll do a great job! Good luck mate! :)

    Amazing job, Mark. I mean it. Looks great. And you really are a man of patience and perseverance. And I love how well-composed and calm you are when ‘disaster’ strikes ☺️ Oh boy, those stickers. Looks very hard. Good it was you. The LED’s look great, especially the row of front 3x2. Looking forward seeing it in the sun (when ever there will be a sun up here where we are).

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words, my friend. As you saw, it was not an easy body to do - and I didn't feel that calm inside when the sticker snapped! But as always, it's a great feeling of satisfaction when the job is finished. All I need to do is make sure that I don't trash all that hard work with a crash on the first run! Yeah, I'm getting quite handy at these LED installs now. Like you I'm hoping the sun will shine soon. All the best my fantastic friend... :)

    Oh wow that was worth the wait! What a stunner. The 6 lights on the front look fab. Top work on the car and the video mate. Nearly a disaster with the ripped sticker but you recovered it well. Interesting that it's sometimes easier to do the stickers in a different order. Also like you say the pre cut stickers are all well and good but you need to cut round the backing to get them lined up on the body. I think I might have left a load of them off and just done it like a road going version! Hope all well with you. One major issue for me is that my wife went to Gran Canaria just before the lockdown and now she is stuck there and can only leave the apartment for food shopping. The original plan involved hiking from hostel to hostel around the island but she's had to cancel all that and rent an apartment. No idea when she will be allowed back. It's a bit of a nightmare. Other than that all good!

      Hiya Pete - cheers for the great comment as always. Yeah, I'm glad I put the 3 white LEDs in each front light, indicators would be redundant on a race car! The stickers are a real pain and the instructions are very vague - lots of guesswork needed! I really wanted this to look like the race car so all stickers must be applied, but I get your drift. All good here matey - OMG Saran seems to be in a right pickle, I really hope all turns out OK for her - you must be getting lonely by now! Fingers crossed and all the luck to you and Saran. :)

    • @PeteWylieRC
      @PeteWylieRC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkBryanRC oh yeah it definitely looks better as a race car but I think I'd get in a mess with all the stickers and give up! Yeah I really hope that Saran gets something sorted out soon. It's a real worry. So there wasn't any new news on closing the schools was there? They are telling us to avoid the pub. It's an outrage! Difficult times we are going through. I'm sure we'll manage one way or another. Best wishes mate 😀

    Hey Mark
    Try scoring, snapping and tearing your body. Heaps easier than scissors, I do 90% of the body that way and just use scissors where the plastic is a bit thicker or I haven’t scored enough.
    Even the wheel arches tear nicely. Then just a quick blast with the protoform wheel arch sanding drum if they are a bit sharp.
    Also like your choice in using the pearl white, I often use it, it’s subtle but a nice change.
    Don’t forget the hairdryer it softens and shrinks slightly also makes those edges stick way better. It also makes air bubbles way less noticeable and the stickers are just so much more mailable.
    Ahhh you did it towards the end. I spoke too soon!

      Hi Paul - yeah I have seen that score and snap method, but have never been brave enough to try it! My scoring with a knife is not too accurate, but I will give it a go on my Wild One, after your encouraging words!
      Yes I am really happy with the pearl white, as you say, a very subtle difference that really sets the body off nicely, while not diverging from the box-art too much. Oh, and the hairdryer was a must on this sticker job!
      All the best, I hope all is good with you. :)

      Mark Bryan RC thanks Mark!
      Secret with score and snap/tear is use an old no. 11 blade let the moulding guide you and it will feel like you are dragging on the Lexan. That’s what you want, you’re not trying to cut but rather kind of scratch the surface. Once you have been around the body, start at the side on a straight line and just fold the Lexan it should fold along the score line and if it doesn’t snap then just lift it up and fold it again kind wiggle it. It will give you a good starting point, from there tear towards the inside of the body, this makes sure that your overspray film tears with lexan and doesn’t lift. Just be mindful that some parts of the body are thicker than others and you may need to re-score or use the lexan scissors, just to get past that point.
      After you have done it once you won’t go back to doing a whole body with scissors again!

    Sorry for the silly question I'm about to build one for my son I watched you paint the shell then remove the protective cover afterwards and it didn't make any sense to me surely the paint would just stick to the cover and not the body now I don't know what to do with mine

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Emma - no problem! Sorry if I didn't make it clear in the video, but you need to spray the paint on the inside of the body shell. The protective cover on the outside is just to stop any overspray from contaminating the outside of the body, and to protect from scratches as you are working on it. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask! All the best from Mark... :)

    Hi guys, congratulations for your Chanel! Very interesting. Do your think you can let me know where to buy light kit for the Subaru Impreza tt02? Thanks you so much.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marcos - I don't think Tamiya make a light bucket set for this body shell. You may be able to adapt one of the generic aftermaket light sets that are available if you search the net, or it may be possible to make your own light buckets. I did a quick search for you, but nothing exactly to fit came up.

    • @MarcosFlores-qe4ry
      @MarcosFlores-qe4ry 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkBryanRC thank you so much for your quick reply! What do you think about my TT02 Subaru Impreza purchase? Ive seen on your videos that you don't paint the head light, does it look more realistic without the head light sticker? Thank you

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love the TT02 Subaru - good choice my friend! I also have a Tamiya Subaru body on my TA-01/2. It also looks great if you fit a Tamiya Rally Cockpit set, take a look at my video of the Subaru to see it! I hope you install ball bearings and oil shock dampers to make it as good as it deserves to be. On a body with the chrome light buckets like this Civic, it looks better without the light sticker. But if you have no light buckets, it is much better to use the stickers instead.

    • @MarcosFlores-qe4ry
      @MarcosFlores-qe4ry 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkBryanRC could you give me any tip to make these light buckets myself?

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marcos - it would be very difficult to start from scratch, I recommend searching the internet for some light buckets of a similar shape to the subaru lights, like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tamiya-58390-Impreza-WRC-Monte-Carlo-07-TT01-DF03Ra-9115186-19115186-J-Parts/392718507253?hash=item5b6fd8dcf5:g:bJIAAOSw0GNbH-It
      ...and see if you can get them to fit. You may need to do some cutting and filing. Alternatively, these are quite a few "universal" light bucket sets out these if you search. Good luck! :)

      On your transmitter there should be servo reversing switches. Move the ch1 to the opposite position it's in now. Or if computer radio there should be a menu for servo reverse.

      @@MarkBryanRC That´ll be an interesting question, and one whose answer may well vary with different surfaces and stuff. Hmmm...it´s makes me want to pit my M03 against my TL01!

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct my friend, the FF03 runs so close to the ground, but I think it will be a close run thing! I reckon the 2WD will be faster in a straight line (less transmission losses) but the 4WD will have the traction out of the turns - anyway, as I said, it will be fun! :))
      Do the M03 / TL01 comparison, it'll be fascinating! :-)

      @@MarkBryanRC I´ve bought a Kyosho MGB body for the TL01 from Kamtec but it´s 1:10 and my M03 wears a 1:12 Minor van body. Hmmm...there´s a 1:10 old-school Mini body somewhere in the attic, so they´d be the same scale. I´d love to take them both to a tarmac track but the next best thing would be to lay out some traffic cones in a supermarket car park on a Sunday and pit them against each other. They´ve both got Mabuchis so it really would be a test of FWD vs. 4WD.
