Something weird going on with YT today. I can't seem to find my pinned comment. Strange... anyway, thanks for watching. This one will be a Blade next weekend, June 3-5.
Absolutely gorgeous knife and one of the best copper Damascus pieces I've ever seen, but there is one problem. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong about the blade (and there are oh-so-many right things about it), but it has exactly zero elements from a tanto. A tanto is a specific kind of knife from a specific culture, and it's made by specific rules. I'm not pedantic enough to cry cultural appropriation and say stuff like "you can't make a tanto if you're not Japanese" or anything like that, but what I can say is this: if you say you're making a tanto, please make it the way a tanto is supposed to be made. There is no such thing as a tanto with a recurve, an edge micro-bevel, a false edge, a full tang with two rivet nuts, a finger guard, a sharpening choil and so forth. Also, the angular tip is more of a Western invention. Not one Japanese tanto in the history of tantos has ever looked like this. It's like making a Kriegsmesser with an angular tip and titling the video "Forging a Copper Damascus Katana with a Cross Guard".
I really admire your work, all of it, but you can do better than this.
@@AndreiH1605 the great thing about my work… I can call it whatever I like. 😜
@@TyrellKnifeworks ... wow. Just... wow. I honestly didn't expect this kind of attitude from you when I just gave a piece of legitimate criticism. I don't even know what to say at this point.
@@AndreiH1605 that was not derogatory. I fully know what a traditional tanto looks like. I choose to call this a recurve tanto because people relate to that.
@@TyrellKnifeworks I get your point, but it's precisely because you clearly know what you're doing that I kinda expected you to promote... good culture, I guess? I agree that "recurve tanto" is pretty much what some people expect, but what they know about Japanese knives is just, well, mall ninja stuff. I guess my point here is that this was a chance missed to educate people. I mean... look at that sanmai wakizashi you did about a year ago: besides some minor details, that thing was freakin A-level, and it was a true blue wakizashi all the way.
This blade will be for sale at Blade show in Atlanta next weekend, June 3-5.
Thanks Denis! Nice save on that false edge! And that's the struggles I face with all the brass I do.. I have to go slow and check the heat because it doesn't take long to melt that epoxy. ❤
Can't wait for Blade! Stunning knife as always Denis!
Your Damascus copper blades really are the best.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching
those copper damascus blades are pure knife porn & they get the same level of enthusiasm
You should try a sorta "Day in the Life of a Blacksmith" so that we get to know what being a blacksmith is really like
This is just a hobby. I have a regular day job in high tech. 👍
Ooooh! Curly Koa is such a beautiful wood! It's really rare, too. What a great finish to a beautiful piece!
Thanks for watching, Isaac!
his handles add a lot to his knives
I love it when the pins disappear. I'm glad you didn't use copper pins. Sometimes the brightness of a pin distracts from the wood of a handle. Another fantastic build. Thanks for sharing.
I really wanted the knife edge to be finished and coffee etched so it needed removable pins. It’s glued up at the end though. Thanks for watching, Mike.
Most beautifull knife I've seen in 9 years watching forging video. Very impressive
Thanks for checking it out!
That rolling mill is so legit! I'm also a big fan of those gulso fasteners... very cool
Thanks, James! Give those Gulso bolts a try. There’s a link in the description. 👍
@@TyrellKnifeworks I used them on my "crypto knife" build. Loved em!
Out of all the content, I appreciate when you tell us about the mistakes. It's show us that you are a genuine person. I'm new to this. I would have been extremely upset when you showed the copper on the tip. I was really hoping it wasn't a replay. Once again you have out done yourself.
Mistakes teach us more than successes. Thanks for watching, Bill!
@@TyrellKnifeworks yes sir it does. What I was trying to say thank you for showing us that even professionals make mistakes. Then you show us how to fix it. Thank you. It's always a pleasure to watch you work
This has to be one of my favourites! There's so much going on but it still flows between them. The crazy patterns at the top, the fines layer lines down the side, the copper of course, then the black core. Beautiful!
I'm still forever impressed that you do your grinds free hand!
Thanks so much, Joshua! Free hand grinding opens more options. It just takes a bit to learn.
Agree the random Damascus looks great
That knife turned out great. I love the handle. Hopefully ill get a chance to see it at Blade before someone snatches it up.
Better come early! 😜. Come by and say hi. 👍
@@TyrellKnifeworks ill be there as soon as the doors open
Nice recovery. Glad you didn't need to regrind the tip; your solution, of course, was much better.
Anything to avoid more hand-sanding. 😜
Its one of the most beatifull things i have ever seen. No words. Amazing knife.
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching.
The video quality is getting better and better! Nice work Denis!
The new lens is awesome! Working to up the quality all the time. 👍. Thanks for watching
What can I say another beautiful job excellent work Dennis
Thanhs so much, David! I appreciate you following along. ❤️
I think that is my favourite knife of yours so far.
Thanks for watching, Logan!
I think out of all the copper knives you've done its probably one of the best in terms of overall composition and colour between the blade and handle.
Also some big props to the mill, that's made them so much more consistent its next level
Thanks for checking this one out, Kris!
Good job tyrell.!!
I've been watching so much forging content on TH-cam and yours is awesome 👍🏿
Thanks so much, Chas! I appreciate you following the channel. 👍
BEAUTIFUL KNIFE! You are truely talented! 😎

I don't know what to say other than amazingly beautiful
Thanks for taking a look!
Man, this turned out Epic! I really like this one Denis.
Thanks Erick! You’ll get to see this one next weekend. 👍
wow, looks amazing, unreal almost!
I love the way you let us know about all the little imperfections you came across some builds and how you try to fix them and by the end you present a masterpiece blade!
Thanks for taking a look, Paul! Mistakes is how we learn, success is a terrible teacher. 👍
Piece of art! Like all others on this channel. Awesome work sir!
Thanks for taking a look!
Absolutely beautiful piece my friend

Beautiful work all around. The black on the etch is stellar. Instant coffee equals instant coolness! 👍
Thanks for watching, James!
Extraordinary work Bro. I can't wait for some more mosaic dimascus
My next big project will be some mosaic Damascus. Stay tuned!
Another beautiful knife. The handles look perfect with the copper damascus.

Thanks so much, I appreciate you watching. 👍
another museum quality blade Denis!
Thanks so much, Jeff!
Wow so beautiful knife
Thanks for taking a look!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching
I still need to try the brodbeck belts. I used some red label 36g ceramics I had laying around and wow! Didn’t even get 1 blade profiled on 1 belt. Norton blaze has always been my go to hogging belt. But it doesn’t hurt to try new things.
You definitely should try the Brodbeck Incinerator belt. It blows away the Norton or any other for that matter. Thanks for watching, Erik!
@@TyrellKnifeworks well that’s impressive. I’m ordering some right now.
Fantastic looking knife.
Thanks Stephen!
What a gorgeous knife. A beautiful work of art.

You are cranking out some beautiful blades. I'm still working on my 5 for Atlanta.
My JS knives are done, so making some to sell at the table. 👍
As usual, beautiful work. I'm really looking forward to start making knives again after September! You gave me some great ideas and inspiration!

Looks awesome
Thanks, Ryan!
Absolutely beautiful, man……
Thanks so much, Mike! I appreciate you watching.
Really really nice
Thanks for checking it out, Don!
Maybe you could put a Filter for blue Light over the screen, whenever you are welding, cause it would be more comfortable to watch. Otherwise great work as usual.
Could you try raindrop damascus? I just love the pattern of this.
Greetings from Germany.
I’ve done raindrop before a few times. Thanks for watching.
So beautiful
Thanks for checking it out!
Gorgeous as usual! Love your work.
Thanks so much, Brian! I appreciate you watching
I really like seeing your copper layer Damascus. That different color is a real eye catcher. It is, IMO, another way to add that artistic touch that you see in a well crafted handle, yet applied to the blade. I am curious if you know of any other ways to add a different color layer.
You can add brass and bronze, they are different colors. I’ve also seen Dakota Wilson (on Instagram) do a process that turns the copper a bright red, that looks very cool. Thanks for watching
Gorgeous!
Thanks for taking a look!
Amazing job! That’s one beautiful knife.
Thanks for checking it out, Robert!
That is beautiful work I would love to use some of that wood
Koa is pretty rare these days and very expensive. It only grows in Hawaii and costs about $100 a block for good stuff. Thanks for watching.
Sweet, I see a lot more of these copper Damascus styles lately lol maybe you might want to try out the next level making mokume gane cu mai damascus
Yeah, I've made mokume gane before, just never combined it with damascus. I know others have though. Thanks for watching.
First off, very pretty. Does the introduction of copper cause any structural issues? I know the core of the knife is that 1095 all the way through, and could serve as a knife in it's own right, but I'm concerned with delamination of the copper from the steel. Thanks!
If you Google copper brazing (which is essentially what this is) you’ll see that the bond is in excess of 70000psi in tensile strength. You’ll destroy the knife before you shear the layers apart. Thanks for watching.
God this knife is absolutely beautiful. I have a question where would I start if I had nothing for knife forging?
Watch my Beginner Series playlist. That will show you how to get started. Thanks for watching!
Well, I think it came out perfect
Thanks so much, Rodney! I appreciate you watching
I love this blade
Wow
Thanks for taking a look!
It is a work of art
Nó là một tác phẩm nghệ thuật
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful as always. I keep forgetting to ask you where the shark for the logo came from.
I'm also a scuba diver and scuba instructor and have been in the water with many sharks, including cage diving with great white sharks. Thanks for following along!
@@TyrellKnifeworks Ah, now it makes sense.
Love your knives! Thanks for the content!
Thanks for watching, Mark!
Awesome, a Tyranto.....
Thanks for watching!
Wow, amazing work! I really love the pattern on the blade you get) thx for the video)
Thanks for checking it out!
How do you cut your maker's mark out of the tape so perfectly? Do you have a stamp to do it?
They are stencils specifically for electro-etching. You can get them from IMG Electromark for about $75. Thanks for watching
Try some birch wood brass black to make your mark stand out works great
I actually like my mark to be more translucent. Plus with the large central area in the shark, hand sanding tends to hit the center anyway. Thanks for watching.
Stunning!
Thanks for watching!
It's very beatifull i have a question. How do you do the black edge of the knife under the copper line ?
The knife was etched is very hot, VERY strong instant coffee for about 4 hours. I’ll do a video on finishing Damascus soon. 👍
@@TyrellKnifeworks thank you so mach you learnt me so much im from italy and i hope to meet you in future.
@@TyrellKnifeworks the coffee part was a wicked curve ball
