Capsule Monster Coliseum is probably one of the most underrated PS2 games there is. Lots of fun and challenging as it should be. Plus it had the voice actors from the DM anime too.

Takahashi really had some great ideas for games, it's quite sad that only duel monsters became successful. The original idea of Yu-Gi-Oh to have the characters play a variety of games was something I didn't expect when I started watching the anime because I only heard about the card game. Sure, I do enjoy duel monsters, but what really got me into the series was Yugi's love for games and the plot revolving around it. I would definitely give capmon and DDM a try if I could.

I love that he was able to buck the trend for the final season, creating a D&D game of Bakura vs. Yami Yugi, my jaw hit the floor when Yami Yugi woke up at the game table the first time.

@@Insert_Bland_Name_Here There was a great video on that. Unfortunately while the setup and the system of the game was great, the AI was as dumb as bricks and couldn't respond well to players, they would just try to attack the main base of the player and nothing else, leaving themselves always vulnerable.
A shame that programming incompetency ruined the potential of that game.

@@HighPriestFuneralo say nothing of the fact that whether the game could progress at all in either direction is up to the RNG deciding to grant either side the priviledge of Movement Crests, and it was impossible to save between battles in a tournament.

That Miho related Capmon duel in season 0 is a strange adaptation of the first Capsule monsters game played in the Manga, which was between Yugi and Mokuba.... that guy rigged the machine like Mokuba did and then make the same plays as Mokuba and lose the same way Mokuba did.
In the Manga, that first game was setup for Death-T and their rematch that was adapted with less random changes.

I prefer the manga introduction. This takes place well after some of the episodal game based storylines and Seto's first defeat at Yugi's hands. This actually coincided with Mokuba's introduction in the manga. He planned a setup to get vengeance on Yugi. He paid off some other kids to lure Yugi in and a store owner to stack the capsules in a machine just before Yugi would pass by so specific monsters would come out in specific order once the grift started. Yugi would be coerced into playing a game of capsule monster chess with Mokuba by the other kids. He flashily purchased the entire machine from the vendor for the duel, so they had it all to themselves. Of course, Mokuba sets the order so he and yugi get exactly the monsters he had planned ahead of time, and the battle goes as planned for a few turns. It appears that Mokuba had a checkmate when Yugi reveals this was the intention. Just like in real chess, he sacrificed his other pieces to lure his opponents into just the right positions. He only had one monster left, but it was one with a special ability that could go the entire length of the board diagonally and take all pieces in between automatically despite its low power. All of Mokuba's pieces were diagonally aligned in its path and thus taken out in one move. Yugi, of course, figured out what was really going on the entire time and the identity of his opponent. Mokuba is devastated as he was legitimately a Capsule Monster Chess Champion (in the manga he is following in his brother's footsteps but CMC is his preferred game over duel monsters) AND set up Yugi with what he felt was an impossible monster combination to win with. If this seems familiar, it's because they basically split this into two storylines in the English dubbed anime (and apparently did the same in the Japanese first season for some reason despite alos having the duel agaisnt Mokuba). This much stronger introduction and characterization of Mokuba would become his non duel with Yugi using a stolen deck as well as the Dungeon Dice Monster arc. Even though they had a capsule monster filler arc, it was closer to Pokemon and DDM was much closer to the origional CMC down to the randomization factor of the pieces and spaces on the board playing a big part. DDM is really just a fusion of Duel Monsters and CMC. This was simply the first interaction between Yugi and Mokuba, and unlike in the anime, it only led to more confrontations. Later, Yugi and Joey would be abducted by the Kaiba brothers and taken to their mansion. This was in the lead up to Death-T. While Kiaba was still in his room supposedly preparing emotionally for the big surprise "invitation" event (he was left emotionally traumatized by his last interaction with Yugi similar to the Englush dub except he had the blue eyes stolen, did not duel grandpa yet and was harassed by miniature visions of the monsters attacking him, hold a pin in that) Mokuba "hosted" the guest with a food fame. He called it dinner roulette. He had a lazy Susan with plates containing full meals. He claims he had them randomly prepared with one containing poison. He doesn't know which does so they will spin the Lazy Susan, eat what they get and deal with the result. The heroes have no choice, and Joey is poisoned. Mokuba reveals he has the antidote but will play Yugi for it. Yugi sees through him revealing that Mokuba both knows already what dish has the poison and has a button under the table at his spot that can stop the roulette exactly where he wants it. He purposely put Yugi in this position to first toy with his emotions over his best friend before killing the both of them. Yugi agrees to proceed but only under the original stated conditions of random chance. Of course, Mokuba gets poisoned food but has some warped sense of honor, so he still eats it. Joey is given the antidote, and Mokuba is rushed off by his service staff. After the preliminary Death-T games, Yugi is forced to face Mokuba in an official CMC match in front of a crowd as a Simi-finals. His grandfather is being terrorized in a hologram chamber by duel monster projections similar to what Yugi put Kaiba through. Kaiba recognizes he removed the trauma, but the much weaker grandfather will die of a heart attack before too long if Yugi doesn't get through the remaining challenges beforehand. The final match, an official duel agaisnt Kaiba in front of a sold out crowd (this is how everyone knew about Kaiba's defeat at Yugi's hands as and how it was recognized as official in the manga. The first duel was a private one at a table in the Kaiba mansion and Kaiba only had the Blue-Eyes he stole at that time.) Thsi match is what was replaced by the one in the forst English dubbed episode but took place in the Kaibaland Stadium in the manga. It was also revealed that the grandpa chamber was not the only use of holograms. The prior duel with yugi where miniture visions of the monsters battled then attacked Kaiba for cheating (since it wasn't his rightful Blue-Eyes it turned on him when played along with the other monsters, a concept recycled for the duel agaisn Yami Kaiba on Duelist island in the English dub) inspired him to weaponize them against his opponents by creating a version of the game with holograms. In the anime, Kaiba just already had this in the works, but in the manga, the Solid State Image Dueling technology was a direct result of Kaiba witnessing Yugis magic. At the them, he believed it was some for of technology Yugi inexplicably set up, so Kaiba simply decided to one-up him with a superior version. Yugi has to beat the Younger Kiaba first who gets his own rematch at HIS game, but Yugi smashed him again. Mokuba reveals that he saved Tristin (who was supposedly dead at this point) and requests Yugi help his brother as well. Yugi then faces Kaiba, who cruely reveals he knew it would happen. Despite the deadly odds the entire time, he KNEW yugi would pass them including his brother who had no chance. This whole set up was his vengeance for the card loss so it didn't make sense that he would want Yugi to lose before their duel. It was all just set dressing as he felt Yugi was worth Dueling and any duelist worth Dueling him would pass all the tests. Mokuba was just one of these and was never believed to actually have a shot at his own vengeance. Kaiba was even mad at Mokuba for the pulling the food roulette stunt so he had his brother saved but also felt the public humiliation of losing his CMC title was a fitting punishment for interfering with Kaiba's own grand design revenge plot. Yugi Technically becomes both an official CMC Master and Duel Monster Champion at the end of this arc. The manga but the CMC stuff just isn't really brought up again. The manga turned to the cards mostly (with a little Bakura RPG stuff) after this so Mokuba and CMC dropped ofconsiderably. This is sad as it gave Mokuba a lot more to his own character. It was also a traditional Chess game that Kaiba won their adoption through and had to cheat during to do so. This is significant when you realize Mokuba selected a type of chess as his signature game and rampently cheated without guilt early on, a justified means to meet his end. He was so much more complex than his watered-down anime counterpart and CMC played a big part of it. It also feels weird that character like Mokuba wouldn't play games but he really did and was a prodigy as well. He just preferred CMC and didn't want to step on the toes of his brother. It is also infered this was done out if self-preservation since the Elder Kaiba held no sentiment when it came to the game and would never allow Moku to take the Champion slot from him anyway.

The board is pretty much your enemy's super power. It's almost always to their advantage. What's even better though is the field has stages, so you can also wait out the enemy's advantageous board phase by playing defensively then attack on the phases that the enemy is more vulnerable.

    • @Xygard

But sometimes it's not their board advantage since you can play to your advantage like marik phase 1 board, and the Pegasus element board, then marik poison board, oh also Kaiba last board just make his unit going to the damage zone then voila easy win against blue eyes 😂

Reading the manga currently. It's interesting the adaptions would sort of splice stories with other stories to make their own narrative. In the manga Mokuba's introduction sort of starts off what I would call the Death T arc. As it's also the first time we hear Kaiba has a plan in store for Yugi.
This would later lead into what would essentially be the 1st episode of the series we know now. Tho with a lot added in. Like Tea/Anzu working for Kaiba land, Tristan/Honda's little brother and the magic marker friendship art. Which hits a lot harder in the manga then it ever does in the anime. Especially Joey/Junochi's dialogue about as much as he's awful dad which we do see a bit in the manga, Run in with gangs and mostly powerless to change it. Being friends with Yugi/Yuugi in the manga was the first time he ever felt happy with he's life.

Is really a fun game, in fact you can take this further and make combinable boards, what do I mean, each player can have his own half board with a established pattern and obstacles, combining them for a full board, or if they add more players, you could use a standard 8 by 8 board as the center piece and everyone put their respective board for their side.

I took some ideas from this spin off game when my friends and I worked on creating Yugioh D&D. It became a board game where you move your character token along the board with a D10 and it became a survival duel where you duel against many enemies until you make it to the boss, or Dungeon Master. You get battle rewards when you beat an enemy in the form of cards in the ban list. Which you can store in a separate pile and draw from there instead of your deck during the draw phase. If a hero loses then they get mind controlled and fight for the boss. If all heroes get controlled then the game gets the Bad End. I was usually the Dungeon Master since I have over 200 decks and I'd choose the enemies at random. When there were too many heroes, a friend who was my usual sparing partner, who understood my decks almost as well as I do, would help me be the villain and he'd throw in a few of his own decks. It's a lot of fun. We also choose a card to be our avatar so we'd can know what we all look like. Usually a card in the extra deck or any card not in the main deck. That's where the D&D part comes in.

Fun fact: In the Manga the first and last Capmon player we see is Mokuba and only Mokuba, the 1st capmon duel is actually his introduction and first meeting with Yugi. His goal there was to get revenge after Yugi put Kaiba in a Coma. The 2nd Capmon duel was during the Death-T arc, but Mokuba's 2nd appearance however is when he invited Yugi and Jonouchi to their house and tried to kill them with poisoned food (No not food poisoning like actual poisoned food) unfortunately for Jonouchi he was the test subject so Mokuba can tell Yugi
So in short: Capsule monsters was Mokuba's main thing in the manga

This game never had a chance to be big but on the flip side, it did get a cool Yugioh game on the gamecube so that is something. Really, these yugioh spin off games like dungeon dice monsters and monster chess, could have been a great expansion to the world of yugioh, but no. Maybe another anime should do that but great look into this game!

The second Capumon game made more sense in the manga since it was actually Mokuba that Yugi faces as he and his delinquent classmates kidnap our hero to get Seto’s attention and praise. Basically Mokuba was to Capumon what Seto was to Duel Monsters and Yugi beat both of them.
That’s why Mokuba comments on it not being the only game he knows how to play at the start of a duel in Duel Links. I don’t know why they went with the creep instead. I guess since they kept Miho as a character they felt the need to use her more. She was just a one off in the manga.

Long term I think you run into a problem with storage, you can fit several decks of cards in the space it would take to store just one team of capsule monster figures. This doesn't sound like a huge problem at first with the limited release of the game we got, but imagine trying to maintain a collection of, say, 100 different monsters, and maybe duplicates of a few since as you pointed out there's no limits on copies of a given monster. At a small scale the game seems pretty cute and fun, but long term this feels like it would be a nightmare to collect and play competitively.

Is it possible to do a rules breakdown of the roller coaster duels in Yugioh Zexal? It lasted for only about a few episodes Duel-wise (ep51-53) but the concept was pretty interesting and may have been a pseudo-prototype to how some rules in Action Duels in Arc V turned out. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @mr.e7806
      @mr.e7806 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh the game is absolutely fire. You play as yugi and go through different areas as you climb the ladder to become King of Capsule Monsters. There are lots of different field that can boost or reduce pieces of certain factions that even change those boosts and effects as time goes on. It really is like Yugioh chess where monster movements, abilities and strategy are vital to win. If you or anyone gets the chance to play it do so as blind to the game as you can so you can feel satisfied with your own skills and then once beaten play with the knowledge of other players from the past so you can try out cool plays of your own. I cannot recommend this enough but older Yugioh games have a charm that is hard to nail down exactly but is charming while also challenging almost always.

Hear me out here. Say a Konami rep went over to Nintendo of Japan's HQ, the rep is a massive fan of Capsule Monsters. I'm sure you can tell where this is going. Nintendo partners with Konami to make Yu-Gi-Oh amiibos specifically tailored for a new and updated version of Capsule Monsters for the switch. The amiibos could be made in the image of the most famous monsters for the first wave to get nostalgia points and collectible potential. Each amiibo can hold a team of monster pieces up to 7. When you scan the amiibo in game you can either get into a match, or tweak your team comp. Think of the way Smash Bros Ultimate handles amiibo figures. In game, you can either generate or roll for monsters you want on your team. You can earn crafting materials to create your desired monster by playing, or spend in game currency you can also earn on monster packs to roll for the monster you want. If you get duplicates of monsters you already have, you can dismantle them for an equal amount of rarity points used for their crafting. Basically it's Master Duel's crafting system, but far more generous with crafting points. There's potential here for the hardcore collectors and fans.
