Just for anyone who hasnt played Manor Lords and wants to try (it is on Game Pass, so an easy try). The combat right now is pretty basic. You pretty much can have two opponents. The easier one are bandits. They are roaming around the map, steal stuff and if you want to use other regions, you have to get rid of the bandit camps. The other opponent is an off map baron. He claims other regions on the map and if you want to use one of these regions, you have to battle him in bigger battles than the bandits. For the battles itself you can use your townfolk (which then do NOT do their work in your town, meaning you are losing resources) or you hire mercenaries.
In general I would say the city building is the way more fleshed out part right now, but it is still only like a third of what is planned for it. It has enough content in it right now to build cities and learn how the economy works, but you will hit a point where there is nothing more to do and you just build for the sake of building.
Why are city builders popular? I think its mostly because they are usually pretty chill games where you can do things like listen to the crewcast and watch things your city grow. If you want a really complex one, Anno 1800 is probably the most complex you can get.
Oh, Slavic Magic is really another solo developer btw. Pretty cool that people can do things like that alone now. Disclaimer: He had some help with sound, music and the historical accuracy afaik.
    Edit:
No idea how the drugs discussion will be seen by TH-cam, but back in the day in the 90s in Germany, at most Techno parties we actually had mobile testing stations. Whatever you got you could test right there on site which made it much safer. Unfortunately because these drugs arent a national treasured drug (alcohol), the testing on site was banned. People will always try drugs, no matter what is allowed or not and I think its a shame that we arent allowed to make it safer just because of prejudices.

I enjoyed the podcast and the FO4 fat play session was a ton of fun, it's always nice seeing games you like from a fresh perspective and Jeremy comparing FO4's Boston to the real place was cool too.
As a pretty big Fallout fan, you've touched on one of the main reasons I found Fallout 4's world to be a real disappointment compared with that of Fallout 3 and New Vegas; It feels like a theme park.
Before I continue, I want to make it clear that I really like Fallout 4 - it's a good game and they got a lot right with the approach they took - it's a big improvement mechanically, the settlement system was a great addition, the tweaks to the aesthetic were an interesting direction to go in too and the glowing sea was a brilliantly designed area.
But coming in as a fan of the earlier games it felt like a case of missed potential, it had so many good ideas that felt like they weren't explored or developed fully and took one step forwards and two steps back in a large number of ways - a lot of the positives seemed to come at the cost of a number of things the two games before it did so, so well.
Fallout 3 was rich in atmosphere and felt like a desolate wasteland with pockets of civilization tucked away wherever they could just about survive with some explanation for how they exist present - usually big walls or being well hidden. For all the criticism it got, the sectioning off of parts of the city with the metro system created a greater illusion of size and made the city feel like it was a ruin.
Fallout 4's world feels too tightly packed together, the sense of scale is off and walking through the city is chaotic but rarely in a good way and it's poor implementation of 'random' events and radiant quests makes it's flaws stand out much more obviously than they otherwise would - e.g constant hostile 'random' events in the same spots with an extremely short (if any) cooldown and radiant quests sending you to defend a farm from a pack of ghouls on the other side of the city while they live a stones throw away from a gang of raiders or super mutants.
I'm also surprised at how densely packed the city is given how poorly it runs on console versions too (the PS4 version at least is rough in most of central Boston).
There a lot of 'set piece' interactions that you either have to engage with or that feel strange to skip past and the first half of the main story is very strongly signposted and near impossible to ignore, combine that with the density of the world - especially contrasted with it's lack of empty spaces and it makes it feel more like a theme park than a lived in world.
The 'major' settlements of the world feel tiny - it was similar in Skyrim too; cities that would've been fairly sizable locations if they were in previous games in the series feel more like shrunken down facades of what they're supposed to be, only adding to that theme park effect.
A lot of the smaller locations felt like they were there mainly for gameplay reasons more than places that should exist in the world too - most of the smaller farmsteads just have two unnamed settlers who exist only to throw a radiant quest at you before letting you build there. There are a handful of exceptions to that but a lot of what would've probably been interesting little towns in FO3 (Andale, Girdershade, Arefu etc) end up as just another settlement that needs your help...

I have a feeling Danny would enjoy Ostriv- it is a city builder in EA by a solo developer which doesn't have any combat and systems are much more fleshed out then Manor Lords. You can just build your peacefull village and chill.

I bought Manor Lords because for some reason I thought it was the game I always wanted - a city builder that you could play in 1st/3rd person. It does have a 'view' mode where you can walk around your town but you can't interact with anything. It's a pretty good city builder but I think I hate the military aspects more here than in any other game I've played. Thankfully, like Danny said, there are easy ways to avoid combat including keeping out of the game options altogether. It's not bad, I'm having a hard time putting it down for sure.

The more I listen to Jeremy, the more he feels like a kindred spirit to me. He has very similar thoughts and taste on media, has a similar interest in drugs and drug history, and also has a Russian mom. It’s almost bizarre for me how much he reflects my own viewpoints and knowledge in these podcast conversations lol.
