I grew up watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood on TV as a kid. As I grew older, whenever I happened to listen to parts of the program I began to notice how well done the music on the show was. Additionally, the more I learned about Fred Rogers, the more I liked him as a person. The down-to-earth, friendly, honest, encouraging person on screen was not a front for the show-it was every part the real Mr. Rogers.
The pianist and musical director for Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was the legendary Johnny Costa. Despite having a very promising traveling career ahead of him, Costa elected to stay in Pittsburgh in order to be with his family and friends. After meeting Rogers, Costa became the show's musical director, performing live on the set with his trio from the show's debut until his death 28 years later.
Rogers wrote all of the songs used on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood himself; his talents, along with Costa's, have given the world a unique and wonderful gift.

I sang this song to my precious husband moments before he died just last month -- it was our thing. And I will be playing this exquisite version at his memorial service this Sunday. Thank you for such an amazingly beautiful rendition and performance. It truly is exquisite.

I just lost my brother to suicide by cop. His viewing is today. This came up on my feed. My heart is touched and comforted. Elegant, heartfelt playing that would have brought smiles to Misters Rogers' and Costa's faces.
Hope you're doing well, @VirtuousPraiseworthy. Hope the cop is also okay mentally. I know trauma like that sticks with you forever.

I remember the first time I ever heard it: Rita Moreno was a guest on MisterRogers' Neighborhood. He asked her if she would like to sing something. She replied IT'S YOU I LIKE. She sang it like an angel!

BEAUTIFUL. You're a very talented pianist. I just finished watching the 3 hour documentary, "Fred Rogers-America's Favorite Neighbor". I've seen it before and was totally blown away by it. This was one of the best documentaries i've ever seen. I grew up watching Mister Rogers Neighborhood but never knew just how talented Fred Rogers was until i saw the film and learned of his life story. His life was a testament of just how one person make a huge difference in this world. I now look at Fred Rogers as a role model for loving my fellow man with acceptance and respect. We truly need more "Fred Rogers" in this troubled world we live in. I miss him now more than i ever thought i would. Thank you, Nathan, for uploading this incredible cover of one of the most beautifully written songs, both musically and lyrics for a children's show i ever heard. Fred Rogers and Johnny Costa would surely be impressed as i am.
Robert Hinkson I just watched two thirds of this same documentary tonight. It has been more than ten years since I've watched it, and it has renewed my interest in Fred Rogers and renewed my appreciation for all he has done for children and public television.
I just retrurned from seeing "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" - a new documentary film out in theaters - and I listened to this piece and read your commentary ..... I couldn't have said it any better myself .... as you ... I miss him now more than ever .... for I have come to appreciate him and his extraordinary gift on such a far more completely different level of understanding
I cried the whole time during the movie! Such a talented man, and so inspiring that he treated everyone with 100% genuineness and sincerity every moment.

Also, just a quick mention -- I love what *sounds* like a tiny nod to the Scarecrow in "Wizard of Oz" -- anyone else pick that up? Was it intentional? Even if not, it's very special and if it WAS intentional, even moreso. Maybe someone already mentioned it in the comments -- I need to read them. Anyway, thanks again.
