    This jeep is so under rated. Yeah, its not as good an off roader as a wrangler or an old cherokee or another one with solid axles on both ends, but this thing has solid rear axles, a powerful engine, and room for overlanding. its much better than those new "jeeps" that have independent suspension

      That's why I'm never letting mine go. I have a 2008 Jeep Commander Overland 4x4, and it's actually our first Jeep, ever. The power of that 5.7L V8 HEMI is ASTOUNDING. I had a few problems earlier on, but we got ours with 185,000 miles on the engine. A new engine is being installed (by someone competent, because we had someone work on it who apparently didn't know the first thing about Mopar engines) and it should be good to go in a couple of weeks. I'm seriously thinking about setting it up as the family overlander, while keeping the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4x4 set up as we have for crawling, as we have 35" tires, a Warn Bluetooth trigger winch w/synthetic rope, and Aries running boards w/auto-retract step-up. The JLUR is new; had it since April of 2019, and has a 2.0 DOHC eTurbo engine that is powerful in its own right. But the POWER of the XK cannot be denied. The comfort of the seats, the digital entertainment system, the accessibility of everything for the pilot & co-pilot...and did I mention the POWER??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
      We've taken it to Hidden Falls Adventure Park in Marble Falls, Texas, and it crawled all the way up on top of WildCat Mountain. It performed like a CHAMPION. For the most part, I would tend to leave that stuff to the Rubicon, but the Commander's Quadra-Drive II is nothing to sneeze at, and I have personally pulled a quad-cab GMC Sierra pickup truck out of mud and water that was deep enough to submerge the Sierra's floorboards and make the muffler blow bubbles. I SWEAR by my XK!!! 🤠✌🏿👍🏿🇺🇸😁😁😁

  • @_TenaciousD_

    Watching this again after 2 years. Absolutely love this build. Commanders are such an underrated rig for overlanding. Very capable from the factory, fairly big inside while still not being a massive vehicle overall, great onroad performance and comfort for the city and hwy, solid offroad esp with QD2 (factory lockers), seat 7 if you need otherwise plenty of room in the rear for draws/storage, very good towing capacity, and fantastic engine options (Hemi & CRD)!

    • @JoshDuncanOverland
      @JoshDuncanOverland 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly, the CRD was never an option in the XK. Hindsight... I should have looked into converting it when I had to replace the HEMI.

    • @_TenaciousD_
      @_TenaciousD_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshDuncanOverland Ha I hadn't made the connection that this was your rig! I am a subscriber of your channel and again, love your build :). I am in Australia and thankfully we have CRD Commanders here (didn't realise you only had them in the WK's, one of the very few things us Aussies get that the American's don't).
      I currently have a JK 4dr with CRD and manual. It is built exactly how I want it, for overlanding. Have done some amazing trips with it and it is very capable and fun to drive. But I now have 2 small children and going on camping trips with the whole family is not how I imagined. The JK is not very big inside and packing is difficult for us all (don't want a trailer, yet), and cruising down the hwy it is loud (minimal sound deadening + 35" mud tyres and wind noise). Just overall it is not as comfortable as a more refined vehicle. I am not ready to part with it yet, but if I do the CRD Commander is the only thing I would replace it with, and yours is my inspiration.

    Got a build for my xk worked out right now. Just getting it rolling as I have the funds. One question, who made your front and rear bumpers? No one I can find carries them anymore so I may end up fabing some vs paying someone else to if they're not available. Haven't hit either yet but the tire carrier, high lift jack, and fuel/water tank mounts alone are worth their weight in gold.

    • @JoshDuncanOverland
      @JoshDuncanOverland 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a company called "WAM Bumpers" that purchased the plans from the guy I got mine from. I don't know if they're still around. You used to be able to find them on Facebook. The problem I've found with them, is that while they may be worth their weight in gold. They unfortunately weigh way more than gold, and do add a significant amount to the trick. If I were to do it over again, I would find someone that could build them with more aluminum.

      He's got lockers that lock automatically, which is interesting!

    • @JoshDuncanOverland
      @JoshDuncanOverland 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Quadra-Drive II System that Jeep runs in the Grand Cherokees an Commanders uses ELSD to lock the front and rear (together or independently) almost immediately on any slippage. I don't know that they're as strong as lockers, and they require a bit of maintenance. But I never have to think about them locking, only waiting for the front to unlock (takes a few seconds).

    • @JoshDuncanOverland
      @JoshDuncanOverland 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The front only locks up when it becomes a 2 or 3 wheeler. It does seem to bias locking the rear up first, and then the front.
      Steering becomes a little more difficult, and it wants to fight back and go strait.
      The stocker 5.7 in my rig didn't make 300 in either number in '06, but I did put a much newer engine in earlier this year. That's what the "it's complicated" comment was about. I haven't (and likely won't) go put it on a dyno to find out what it actually makes. It makes more power than I will probably ever need.

      Josh Duncan Overland It's never too late to cut speed holes. Lol! Seriously though, if you go to a decent metal worker (read: proficient with a TIG welder and understands the loads you need to pull), he'd probably be able to duplicate your current ones in aluminum for you. Sell the old ones on eBay and you'll recoup a good chunk of the cost.

    • @JoshDuncanOverland
      @JoshDuncanOverland 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, getting lighter bumpers is on the list for sure. But there are other priorities

    • @JoshDuncanOverland
      @JoshDuncanOverland 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the goal. It's down the list though. The current ones work. I will probably revisit the bumper weight when my tires wear out, since that's when I'll take a look at tire size and suspension again.

      Josh Duncan Overland any issues at all with CVs and driveline angles or other worn out sooner than usual parts with the OME? I assume that’s why you didn’t space the front additionally and did rear only (besides for rear weight handling). Thank you!

      @TheUnorthodoxx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that was my problem. I have a build thread over on the OB forums. I might have overbuilt my drawers (spare scrap laying around) that's adding to the weight. Then add the insane bumper, 15 gallons of fuel/water... It's a lot at the extreme back end of the rig.

      WamBumers.com and JeepSteel.com. You can't go wrong with any of them. I recently purchased the JeepSteel bumper. It's less expensive and Buzz the owner is awesome to work with! Wam Bumpers you can design your bumper and add so many different options.

    • @JoshDuncanOverland
      @JoshDuncanOverland 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The place I got the bumpers from went out of business shortly after I received my bumpers. WAM is supposedly a different company that purchased all the plans. I don't have any experience with them, or JeepSteel. They are the only places that I have heard of that have made to order bumpers for the XK. I feel it is worth pointing out that the address for WAM is the same as the former Tactical Armor Group (TAG) that I bought my bumper from, and previously Kennesaw Mountain Accessories and Blue Lake Offroad. I sincerely hope that it is has changed hands. I have no first hand knowledge working with WAM to say.
      That said, watch how you build your XK. The added weight changes the way it drives a little, and most of the marketed suspension upgrades don't handle the weight of steel bumpers, all your gear, and the HEMI very well. I found that the OME kit worked the best. Even with that, I still had to put spacers in the rear so that it didn't look like a baja racer when I was loaded for a long trip.

I can't say that I've heard any more bad things than I've heard about the HEMI. In point of fact, I think the early XK, the 4.7 was better than the 5.7.
