  • There was an EPIC BATTLE between man and fish. Man was triumphant.
    I decided to hit the early mid-morning bite before it got too hot but the Sun beat down on me over the tree tops. That meant a black wooly bugger flyfishing fly was on the menu. This time the Cowlitz River Steelhead lost an EPIC battle with a 14ft #9 Spey Rod and a persistent angler. I have fallen too many times to count. Had a couple steelies make me slip off rocks on the strike.

    I can see why the neighbor piled the rocks on that spot. That spot looks like a solid high spot on the floor not far below the waters surface. Probably not easily seen from a drift boat or any boat as far as that goes. So him piling the rocks on there was to probably warn those in boats of that spot.

    Two days later and still laughing at you kicking over your neighbor's creation! LOL!!!!

      I would have left it alone had he not built it right in front of my place. It was even freaking my dog out every time he looked out the window. :-)

      If that fish wasn't clipped it would have been released. Thanks for watching.

    After seeing what the "Monuments" were built upon I would speculate that they were to serve as a visual warning of those massive rock sl;abs that absolutely destroy a Sled coming through fast with an operator new to the river. Fish of a thousand casts, beautiful fish.

    Im no expert but i feel like those rocks make it easier to avoid the larger rocks when the river comes up

    • @Northwestfishingfanatics
      @Northwestfishingfanatics  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm no expert either but I know the river will topple those when it hits about 5000cfs anyway. Trust me, it's not smart to erect obstacles in area boats travel. thanks for watching. Appreciate it.

      Soon. Probably around end of September. I like to catch them from the ocean first before they hit the river.

    How do you know the hatchery is the reason for the brown algae? Do you have a source or is it speculation they are responsible for killing off or reducing other river species. I’m truly curious because of the anti hatchery folks hear and see this it won’t be good for the cowlitz river fishing.

    • @Northwestfishingfanatics
      @Northwestfishingfanatics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've watched the algae growth and change in river conditions and habitat for over 50 years. I'm not anti-hatchery by no means. I think they should focus on more output and less on so called "wild" fish which are long gone already. By the way, it really isn't brown algae as much as it is sediment/detritus, from the hatchery.

    Nice video, but I have to say, it's a bit ironic to hear you pontificate about how hatcheries are ruining your river. Then watch you grab a hatchery fish by the gills. Your home river has summer run steelhead these days ONLY because of the hatchery. The dams have changed the river forever. I get your desire for wild fish, but its not this river.

    • @Northwestfishingfanatics
      @Northwestfishingfanatics  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The hatchery has already ruined the river. They should crank out as many fish as possible.
