1993 first met TSP and Butch Vig while recording 'Siamese Dream' near Atlanta. They had booked the studio to get Jimmy away from his drug buds up North. It didn't work. He was still fighting addiction when we opened for them on April 9, 1994 - a day after Kurt Cobain's suicide was discovered. I think this shook him to his own fate if he didn't kick. Congratulations to Jim - a friend, and survivor of those strange days.
I think he looked over at James at that point because of something about the two overdose incidents that they both knew about....like maybe one of them was defending Jimmy and Jonathan OR one was accusing and then that person realized the truth and felt stupid, The way James chimes in it seems like maybe he was defending them or maybe he was telling Billy he thought there was a problem all along - something like that. Definitely seems like they weren't on the same page about it till after the 2nd OD based on what they're saying(and aren't saying) and their body language/nervous laughter.

D’Arcy almost started crying when she was talking about the overdose :( Billy just seems angry and James is mostly at a loss for words. Sucks that Jonathon died and Jimmy almost did (thank god he didn’t). I really don’t understand how D’Arcy went off the rails and became such a drug addict. She seems so anti-drugs (or at least anti-hard drugs) here...
Ryan B. - Lots of people have an untreated "mental illness". It's very common, but their lives would be better if they took a daily med. & also had a couple trips to the psychiatrist. Unfortunately, there is still some resistance to getting help, & totally unnecessary shame attached to going to get help. More people overall, I think, are going to get help, before it's too late, or they damage their lives & reputation.
Both Darcy and James had a real problem with Billy’s dictatorship he had in the band. But James however appears to be a very humble guy and quiet while Darcy seems to be more easily agitated. It’s a shame Darcy had a downward spiral and I hope she’s at least doing better or on a road to recovery.

Revealing private things such as drug addiction in an interview that is going to be watched by millions of people is not lying responsibility and ownership upon a person, it's being a scumbag. If they really cared they would have helped him, first by having a serious discussion and not pressuring people that have drug issues by asking them constantly "have you taken drugs?? are you sober??" like these idiots admitted they did, which only makes a person want to get high even more, and, secondly, having him rehabilitated in a facility that supplies buprenorphine or methadone (I don't know about the US but it's free here... and even if it wasn't, they have enough money to pay for one). They are scumbags (which I expected from Billy but not James and D'arcy) and no one should ever put individuals who have serious issues such as drug addiction and likely depression under public scrutiny. It has never helped and never will. Quitting opioids is hard, it's a lifelong battle, and has little if nothing to do with responsibility. When your addicted to heroin and you don't take it you feel sick and you need a long acting opioid like methadone to stop the withdrawal symptoms and to be able to taper off and gradually recover (upregulate) the opioid receptors. I mean, we're talking about a man that swears on his life that he knows lizard people are real because he saw someone once transform into another person in front of him. I love early SP, but it's like you're from 1999 and haven't read a single headline regarding Corgan since then..
Fantastic band and mixed feelings about Corgan. On the one hand, he is a super-talented singer-songwriter (one of the best of his day alongside Cobain and Stephen Malkmus, Jeff Buckley and many others) and is clearly very intelligent and articulate and I love their music but sometimes I just wish he would shut up and let the others get a frickin' word in. I don't know if it's his ego or just his mind going too fast or what.....maybe a bit of both.
Great talent often comes from an inner drive that comes from places of great pain. What an incredibly difficult time for the band. I wish we could have heard a little more from James and Darcy in the interview
Trivia - Prince released a great song called 'The Love We Make' for Johnathan Melvoin as Prince knew him as he was Revolution members Wendy Melvoins brother....
Hahahahaha I love that Billy’s basically lecturing/goofing on a dead guy when he starts talking about the last overdose discussion they had... He’s about as 90s style lacking in self awareness as it gets here. Ugh....I miss these days
I guess nobody can play better for the Smashings than Jimmy... The Smashing Pumpkins is Billy, Jimmy, James and Darcy, period. The Pumpkins by 2012 was only Billy with other musicians trying to play The Smashing Pumpkins song's. It cannot be the same without them.
The Internet Killed Music Maybe you preferred to listen Back Street Boys or NSynch at that time and you couldn't understand The Pumpkins music, what a pitty....
The Internet Killed Music Boring... Maybe your life... I saw them life also... I recorded an album in the same studio they recorded Gish and I talked and worked with the people that recorded with them, Butch Vig included... They talked also about them and boring was never on their list of adjectives. Boring your comments
I had tickets for the show at Kiel Center in St. Louis and Garbage was supposed to headline. They were my absolute favorite band and it was a huge bummer when they paused the tour. I was super excited to see them that fall when they got back on the road.
Nice to see billy seem so open real and raw with emotion. I hate the circumstances but it was what it was. And it was a looong time ago. I'm so thrilled that Jimmy got his shit together. Now him and Billy are back! Billy's new album is amazing as well. Love this band so much 🤘✌️❤️
How surreal! What an impact into the future of sound for the Smashing Pumpkins with that line up! Another point worth mentioning; D'Arcy spoke more than 7 words in this entire interview... WOW!
Reality really hurts.. Some people cant handle it. For whatever the issue the smashing pumpkins had or still have, im still their number one fan in music..
A rock band with drug users, who'd a thought!!!??? Where the hell were you for that past 30 years. I love Pumpkins music but always thought Corgan may be a bit pompous. Its like working at a bar and saying these people drink too much...
Andrew Rodriguez Thank you, I thought the same thing. What a bitch. They don't say that kind of shit these days. They really didn't say it in the late 90s either she's just.....a bitch. Did I say she's a bitch? Cause, well, you know.....
I blame heroin as the major reason that Rock died in the late 1990's. I mean come on, how many songs about being a depressed junky and how many of your heroes can die from the crap, before you get disgusted of it?
Michael, both D'Arcy and Billy said harsh truths in the interview. Why is she a bitch but Billy, who is actually KNOWN for being insanely difficult to be around, not an asshole? For saying the same things?
The toll the pumpkins was taking on darcy which estranged her from billy corgan for over 10 years is evident here. shes worn out and full of frustration.
Being an addict myself I learned that the first rule to keep the addiction up is to be a good liar. "we all thought you was in ctrl".. yeah, because I lied too good.
The irony that Darcy was probably just getting into her drug phase at this time. I've never heard her talk so much in an interview where she is not only eager to answer questions but giving all kinds of extra information on the topic.
jimmys nose was so swollen in that interview at the beginning of the tour compared to what it looks like any time he's been clean since - just kind of an odd little observation.
7:05 - Test them? They will get mad when you ask. If they were clean, they'd have gotten over that and submitted to the tests. If they got indignant and quit over it, at least they're not dying on your watch.
13:12 Stage of Grief: Denial. He sounds like he’s trying to convince himself everything is going to be fine lol “is there gonna be any changes to the band” yeah. Everything 🤦♂️
They obviously didn't understand how addiction works at this stage. It's the hardest addiction because it's much harder to stop than any of the others. Even if people want to stop they need alot of help and support to do so. If they get ostracised for their addiction and isolated they will feel ashamed and just spiral and use more.
Fuck Jimmy is so inspiring. Watching this you would think he would never come back from this. I love that he Billy and Iha are cool again. Wish D'arcy could be there too.

Swear when he said "we aren't going to retool the band around matt" I was reminded what a pretentious cunt he really was in the 90s😂
I saw this tour a week after this interview in Canada and they were great.
Great talent often comes from an inner drive that comes from places of great pain. What an incredibly difficult time for the band. I wish we could have heard a little more from James and Darcy in the interview
Very, very well put.
Is that Dimebag's guitar @ 1:12??? Was Billy friends with Pantera?
yeah I saw the slime pretty sure it's the Washburn not the dean
Trivia - Prince released a great song called 'The Love We Make' for Johnathan Melvoin as Prince knew him as he was Revolution members Wendy Melvoins brother....
Dickie Holmes I didn’t know that, I know who Wendy is she was a long time member with Prince.
The Internet Killed Music its what I mean... Even more dumb ass yourself who pays to watch a band that you even understand...
I was super excited to see them that fall when they got back on the road.
guy died 7 weeks before the interview and they're laughing about it and talking shit about him
Nice to see billy seem so open real and raw with emotion.
“Tuuuweer”
THIS IS REALLY ironic to Hear this and the D'arcy not being there NOW on the Reunion Tour @10:00
yep he speaks almost same way about Her Now, F it we go on without her
A rock band with drug users, who'd a thought!!!??? Where the hell were you for that past 30 years. I love Pumpkins music but always thought Corgan may be a bit pompous. Its like working at a bar and saying these people drink too much...
Sydaball - The fact that many bands do drugs doesnt mean it’s ok. Drugs destroys things.
@Benjamin S Exactly
"Running a rock band with junkies in it"
Harsh.
Andrew Rodriguez Thank you, I thought the same thing. What a bitch. They don't say that kind of shit these days. They really didn't say it in the late 90s either she's just.....a bitch. Did I say she's a bitch? Cause, well, you know.....
billy is a seriuos guy......a professional.why would he want to be in a band with a junkie who lied to him who could die onstage or tour????wake up
I blame heroin as the major reason that Rock died in the late 1990's.
Thats rock n roll Corgan ,and yes....you signed up for it
i feel like Iha did the least drugs
D'arcy was a little drug addict.
She Didn't partake in hard drugs until 2000.
I don't doubt it.
Daniel Mcgreevy How in the world do you know that? Lmao
Billy and james both. Billy only did drugs on gish
Great interview. Felt bad for the band. Firing a friend is hard. Thought the interview was intensely honest
As for D'arcy ~ she should be with the band on the new reunion tour!
Mishelle Rauth she had all the chances in the world, she didn't want to
Great footage.
Iha looks so annoyed when Darcy is talking. He kind of rolls his eyes or starts moving in his seat. Ha. He does this in videos throughout the years.
4:24 James' look when Billy says "That's more bullshit drug addict excuses.." is priceless
Huh? His expression barely changed.
I love the pumpkins but as someone whos been battling with addiction for a while Billy corgan has no idea how drug addiction works
That moment when Darcy is speaking quite compellingly and Billy keeps trying to bring the attention back to him.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
she kind of seemed like a concerned mother during that part
I think he just was just eager to speak...he tends to have a lot to say
And then in the polar opposite Universe, James sits there in utter silence.
Looking back to what happened some years after, it's so sad to listen to this (10:16) coming from Billy. Only if he knew...
And the SP were never the same after he left. Jimmy was the unsung hero of the SP who could match Billys riffs perfectly...
When you wake up from a drug stupor with your friend not responding, It will sober your ass up with the quickness lol
The toll the pumpkins was taking on darcy which estranged her from billy corgan for over 10 years is evident here. shes worn out and full of frustration.
Back when u could get to know a band, as humans.
1:23 "the drummer mat who is our drummer" lmao
Being an addict myself I learned that the first rule to keep the addiction up is to be a good liar. "we all thought you was in ctrl".. yeah, because I lied too good.
Thanks for posting this stuff
We dont see interviews like this anymore. EVERYTHING is choreographed with a PR team with boilerplate questions and answers.
The irony that Darcy was probably just getting into her drug phase at this time. I've never heard her talk so much in an interview where she is not only eager to answer questions but giving all kinds of extra information on the topic.
"Billy, why did you fire D'racy?" ...Billy takes out phone and plays this 1:24 LOLOLOL
Amazing success story. Think of all the greats that didnt exit the 90s....
Omg I’ve seen this on MTV 20 years ago.... I had that Zero T-shirts too.
Omg D'arcy looks so damn cute
The Wayback Machine.
jimmys nose was so swollen in that interview at the beginning of the tour compared to what it looks like any time he's been clean since - just kind of an odd little observation.
Just the year 1996 in the Smashing Pumpkins history would make a full dramatic movie or a book. They went through a lot that year.
that live Filter footage looks so awesome!
The one time I got to see the Pumpkins back then was shortly after they fired Jimmy. It was a real shame.
Damn, never knew it was the guy from the Zero video that died.
09:53 - what a great image of what would happen a couple years down the line ...
I was at that Vegas show-90’s fucking rocked!
I was at that Las Vegas show-fucking amazing then and amazing today.
James and Darcy, with their vacant stares added huge mystic and presence in music videos and live shows. Billy knew this.
"vacant stares added huge mystic presence"???
The SP whent from a drum-machine to Jimmy if that is not a tuch of god what is.
This is the definition of musical pressure.
2:04 parking in 1996 was just $1.25 what the hell! Today parking is about $40 if you are lucky. Dam corporate overtakings!!!!!👿
They obviously didn't understand how addiction works at this stage. It's the hardest addiction because it's much harder to stop than any of the others. Even if people want to stop they need alot of help and support to do so. If they get ostracised for their addiction and isolated they will feel ashamed and just spiral and use more.
"We don't have to worry whether or not Jimmy's going to explode tomorrow"
-Spinal Tap reference?
Fuck Jimmy is so inspiring. Watching this you would think he would never come back from this. I love that he Billy and Iha are cool again. Wish D'arcy could be there too.
They did the best thing for Jimmy.
Back in the day when MTV had music and interesting music related shows. Sad.
I must've watched this many times I could quote several lines.
R.i.p John
I saw them with Matt in San Jose. It was definitely a heavier sound, but that was fine for the Mellon Collie songs.
I saw them in New Orleans in 97 right after they fired Jimmy and they sounded awesome.
