    I'd recommend focusing on Powder for now and not start with formulating more characters right away. For one her character development is already going to be a massive piece of work to unpack and secondly I'd argue that she is the most interesting to look at from a therapists perspective in the sense that she is going through the most extreme changes over time. I.
    LOVE.
    THIS.
    As an author, we are usually internalizing these profiles and intuiting the character's psychology. (Listen, all fiction is fundamentally an illusion, but the closer to reality the illusion looks, the more we can sell the illusion.)

    • @nostalji93
      @nostalji93 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Is it though? An Illusion is a misinterpretation of reality. If I am reading fiction I am fully aware I am not reading some fake history and engage with fictional ideas. Fully agree though with the idea that fiction is usually best if it is realistic and appears authentic. Lies that contain a certain amount of truth are more believeable. On the other hand people with the physical understanding of a preschooler are also able to write incridible popular ScFi stories. laserblaster/ swords *cough*

    • @ObliqueReference
      @ObliqueReference 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@nostalji93 Think 'illusion' in the sense that a professional magician uses it, not in a 'delusion' sense. Powder does not exists, has never existed. She has no thoughts or feelings, but because the creators understood enough about human psychology they could create enough moments that our natural human inclination is to fill in the gaps and try to imagine what she must be thinking. Hence, illusion.
      Side note, it's why I get a little irritated when people get morally outraged over an evil character doing a bad thing-- it's like getting mad at a magician for sawing that poor woman in half.

    • @nostalji93
      @nostalji93 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ObliqueReference " fill in the gaps and try to imagine what she must be thinking" Its the same with real people I'd say. I recently read the transcript of the trails of Joan de Arc. A historical event, her words, yet there are plenty of gaps to fill.
      A professional magician actively tricks our senses to misinterprete reality an author usually doesn't. I never read a fictional story that actually tried to convince me reality isn't what I think it is. (Well maybe the matrix, but it didn't trick my senses in any way). If I am watching a movie I don't watch an illusion, but the projection/depiction of a usually fictional story. I might be to pendantic about this and my definition of illusion to narrow, but technically stories are not illusions, since they do not make my senses misinterpret reality. But I get the analogy because our brains don't really seperate between fiction and reality.
      Regarding your side note I have a fetish for good villains or even better characters that break the literary bonds of hero/villain tropes and are written like human beings. Including the good, the bad and the ugly.^^
      But I do sometimes question myself where do these ideas come from. Especially if we look at japanese Mangas like Beserk, some of the actions there done by team evil are truly disturbing. Or George R. R. Martins faecal obsession. oO

    • @ObliqueReference
      @ObliqueReference 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@nostalji93 Right, we do the same process for real people. Our theory of mind is pretty much working all the time (as least for most people). I'd rather not get hung up on the term 'illusion'. It suffices to say that the character only exists as an artificial construct between the viewer and the creator, and has no other life, and no other responsibilities.
      As for horror, as a horror writer myself I can say that just like every person has a capacity for honor and kindness there is also a capacity for rapaciousness and cruelty. If we could excise these impulses from humanity it would have happened long ago. Fiction lets us wrestle and explore these ideas without actual harm coming to anyone other than (in the late Miura's case) a drawing. If you're at a loss for horrible ideas, there are history books aplenty.

      @@ObliqueReference "every person has a capacity for honor and kindness there is also a capacity for rapaciousness and cruelty. If we could excise these impulses from humanity it would have happened long ago." I am quite sure this was "successfully" attempted by doing damage to the frontal lobe via Lobotomy. But sadly proves everything you just said. Personally horror is my least favourite genre especially when the horror comes from physical pain. I just imagine the injuries to empathaticly. Thats no fun I tell you. Ironicly I am still drawn to violent men to men combat (especially the technical aspects of it, but also the rush of a fight) and I have a strange affection to blades. I love that Vi moves like a real boxer. But yeah in the end we are still animals and animals act based on instincts. We need to be aware of that or we are ignorant to the potential damage we can cause. I am with Nietzsche on that.^^

    Wonderful analysis.
    Some things about the world that I personally have surmised through multiple watch throughs that aren't spoilers but I believe add context to the overall narrative.
    The fissure's/under city/lanes were originally a mining colony. As the city's population grew the mines became deeper and longer and the city built refineries and other material processing/factory's near the mines in the cracks that had been carved out. The smog from the factory's in the lanes have very few places to go leading to the air becoming passively toxic even with added infrastructure to try to clean the air. The deep trenches carved for mining also leads to less hours of sunlight in the fissure's.
    THIS NEXT SECTION MIGHT BE SPOILERS SO MAYBE SKIP A PARAGRAPH.
    A recurring theme in the show is that any of piltovers progress, be it culturally, economic, or scientific leads to the opposite for the under city. Not through malicious intent but rather through negligence on the part of those in power.
    Some additional notes on objects in the world and there uses. Vander's gauntlets are a mining implement in the fissure's. The enforcers masks are for breathing in the fissure's, but they also have the unintended phycological effect of being a physical barrier separating the enforcers from their actions, and they dehumanize the enforcers from the perspective of the people in the fissure's as they prevent them from seeing the enforcers faces. As for the Elixir at the end of the first episode it was used on a rat to kill a cat, a reversal of the natural order.

    But now, I just had to leave a comment to express how much I appreciate this. The amount of work that went into this video is admirable. You explain the concepts very clearly, in terms everyone can understand, which I'm sure must be hard when you have so much knowledge. You know how to phrase it in a very didactic way (I don't know if you are or were a teacher, but there's something very pedagogic in how you explain things).
    Amazing video. It's nice to see a glimpse into what's going through Powder's mind and why, and how everything interconnects and affects her current and later actions, thoughts and behaviors. You nailed her with just the first episode, and you even were able to "predict" or question about things that are actually going to happen. I think Powder is definitely the character that's the most complex so probably a good thing to start with her, but there are definitely a few other characters (including some we're yet to meet) that would also be interesting to dive into. Look forward to both future reactions and future analysis videos!

    Thanks so much for going in-depth with this character analysis from a psychological perspective. It’s really fascinating to think about this as a writer and how certain situations might impact or propel the narrative. Really looking forward to hearing your take on the rest of the series. I know it will be worth revisiting this analysis at the end.

    I LOVE this. I understand that some might want just the flashy O-: face reactions but I´m SO here for this! I´m here for the character work, I´m here for the glimpse into your craft (and taking the stigma off therapy) I´m here to just watch someone be good at what they do in a context understand and enjoy (Arcane) PLEASE keep it up 🥰🥰
    Edit: that said I would like to agree with a fellow commenter. Please do it at the pace you feel you enjoy. Don`t feel you now OWE us these analysis all the time. Trust me when I say you enjoying doing it transfers over to us as viewers being into it 🤗

    I took a peek to see if you'd done a reaction to the Arcane music video for Enemy by Imagine Dragons. It gives a nice peek into a bit of background for Powder and her relationships with the others in the group. Might be worth a look if you want to get more insight into her interactions with her peers.

    Stuart, I thought this was an excellent breakdown of teaching a ‘formulation’ using the five P’s via Powder’s character in Arcane. Such a great way to teach lay people therapeutic evaluation techniques.
    Btw, I would have loved you to have done a breakdown formulation of Blurryface v Tyler as seen within Blurryface and Clancy albums.

    Everything about your expertise in this video is revelatory, and we're so lucky you're doing this for us.
    One suggestion for your recording/editing process: you could halt your narration while you're writing, and then resume narrating when your note is completely written out. That would give you the opportunity to cut out the time while you're writing.
