In my Buddhist community, the annual "rainy season" is called Ango and it happens September 1 - December 8 (enlightenment day.) For me it really has back to school energy 😄 I read Buddist books, make time to meditate and take long walks. At the end, we have a short retreat to celebrate Buddha's enlightenment. I look forward to it starting soon!
Thanks for the reminder. I followed your 21 days habit building guide. And after day 21 I didn’t continue with my meditation 😩 It’s like my brain needs longer. Thank you so much for your wisdom, Venerable Nick. I apologize for my ignorance, but I was wondering-does Buddhism teach us to get rid of anger, or are we supposed to befriend it since it may have something to tell us? (This question is about your comments around the 5:37 mark.) Also, out of curiosity, is there a difference between the teachings in your monastery and those at Plum Village? I understand if this is a long question, and I ask out of a desire to learn. I love following your content-it leaves me feeling relaxed and deeply grateful. Thank you again 🌻
I know I'm not who you're looking for, and I'm not expert so please take what I say with a grain of salt. But I want to take a shot at your question in case he never sees this. As for getting rid of anger, in Buddhism it's considered one of the "three poisons" (is the most common translation). Basically, the three biggest things holding us back and keeping us in dukkha (usually translated as suffering). Naturally, yes we want to get rid of this poison. My understanding of it (and again I am no expert), is that while we want to rid ourselves of anger, its not to be done directly. One doesnt simply suppress their anger, youll just make it worse. I've noticed a lot of Tibetan and Zen teachers mention what you mention, "befriending" or "welcoming" it as a method to not suppress it, and giving it less power. Personally I find this to be a great method, but in the end the goal is just to find a way to give it less of a hold on you since straight suppression is usually a bad option. (There are some cases to be made for straight suppression but it's usually for more experienced folk). As for the differences between this and Plum village, I honestly do not know haha. I will say that I believe Venerable Nick is from the Theravada tradition, but I'm not sure which tradition Plum village follows as I'm only barely familiar with them. Sorry I do not have more insight there.
@@Moonsprinter1 You’re amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I’ve been grappling with anger suppression for some time now, and it’s something I’m deeply interested in understanding better. That’s why I reached out for clarification. Your insights have given me a new direction to explore, and I’m genuinely grateful. You’ve truly brightened my morning. Thanks again 🌻
@doribel7039 of course! I'm glad (and aittle surprised) I could be so much help :). If you want to deep dive into it, dealing with anger is part of right mindfulness and right effort in Buddhism (they are two aspects of the eightfold path). That is to be aware of your thoughts and armed with that awareness use whichever techniques work to learn to control them (to both foster wholesome ones and weed out unwholesome ones). If you look more into that you'll learn a lot more about what you want to learn! Just remember that you are going to straight up fail to weed out thoughts sometimes, and that's ok and it's normal. Just take that failure as a learning experience at best and a byproduct of still being a learner at worst :) I think you're doing an awesome thing trying to look into all of this and asking questions, best of luck with it all!
Feedback: can you please make the outro section longer? Listening to your videos will full attention often leads to an altered or entirely changed perspective. The reason I suggest making the outro section with that music playing longer (maybe like 1 minute/1.5 minutes instead of 10 seconds) will be beneficial in terms of inviting viewers to rest for a moment and think about everything you said. Thank you for making this video. As usual, they're extremely helpful, and your intention for doing them is beautiful.
Hi Nick, I'm in a position now where I'm trying to realign my life, but I know as someone who's tried this multiple times over the decades that little by little I will slip back into familiar habits and my negative ways of interacting with people. I need to find a way to keep vigilence over myself when I'm around people and to correct my behavior in 'real time', which is easy in the short term, but I need to do this for many months or years before the old habits die away! It's very hard to keep up my discipline for so long when constantly battling with the little everyday challenges that life brings. How do I keep the focus for months or years?
