  • Auto body doesn’t have to be expensive. Especially if you’re just trying to get through a couple more years with a vehicle you’ve got. Doors are a little tricky you can’t just slap Bondow on it it’ll break out right away. If you take some aluminum or steel sheet you can make some plates pop rivet I’m on blur the edge and then spray rubberized undercoating. It’s really easy really fast really low cost. In the video I go through some of the techniques that make up line auto body filler really easy. You can use those bags that you have millions of from the grocery store. They work amazing.Hope you enjoy the video

I’ve done similar repairs on my van as well. A cheap alternative I found is to buy aluminum fascia from Lowe’s (or your other local hardware store) that has the ribbed texture on it. Attach the long part to the door exterior with rivets or sheet metal screws. Then fold the smaller nailing flange under the door edge. Add some adhesive around the edges prior to attaching to help keep water from getting in between the patches. Then spray with truck bed liner or undercoating similar to this video. Good luck, my fellow rust belters!

I have done similar cheap repairs like this and was totally satisfied. As you said, it will be good for a few years anyway. Nothing is permanent. Great video

Thanks for posting this video. I learned a few things. the end results came out great. I thought it was a different SUV at the end of the video👍 .
I have a 2003 old car that is too embarrassing to drive because of the rust.
I was going to get rid of it even though engine and transmission are great.
I will do this and keep the car a few more years. Thanks again 👍

That bag technique is pretty cool. Good video, Quick and to the point.
Reasonable and quicker still: after pop riveting on sheet metal patches, use HVAC aluminum foil tape instead of putty to "blend the seams". Save on paint and save your lungs from over spray by using brush-on Rustoleum. Foam brushes don't last but provide a nice smooth finish. Make cheap foam brushes with masking tape, and paint stirrer, and scrap foam from packing material, etc. Fold approx. a 1.75" x 3.5" x 3/8" strip over end of paint stirrer and tape. (An electric carving knife is best tool for cutting foam). Mix 1 quart color of choice with 1 quart "aluminum" color for poor man's metallic of sorts.. A bent piece of HD wire (e.g a garage sale sign posts) and a drill makes a good paint stirrer. Instead of all that putty, spend a few bucks on "rusty metal primer" prior to top coat. An old scrap water heater outer skin can provide over 25 ft^2 of sheet steel for free. An old bed frame is good angle iron with which to make make a brake (with clamps). Old cardboard makes a good drop cloth. It also makes a good mechanic's creeper by providing a smooth surface on which to slide and maximum clearance to work under a jacked up vehicle. Make sure you've had your tetanus shots working with all that rusty metal. Wear gloves. Spray the inside surfaces you can't sand with an oil based undercoating to slow down the rust. Underneath, if you have a metal oil pan, spare tire linkage, etc, you may want to attenuate any rust on those. But don't power sand the gas tank. Two part epoxy is useful in spots were a heavy duty patch is needed.

Before seeing this video, I had done this similar type of repair myself to 3 vehicles I have owned over the years. This on average lasted 4-5 years before I'd have to cut out rusted metal and do more again. Well worth it in my opinion to get a bit more life out of an old beater.

I just bought a good condition '01 E-350 Super Duty work van with just under 100K miles. Besides the brakes (replaced yesterday), the lower body is rusted out. Doors are fine, just the lower body. First job for my new old van is to replace 17 windows. Picked them up today and dropped 'em off at the job. I'll rent a brake for cladding the outside. Looks like I'll be cladding more than the window trim! 😊😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Am I missing something? Aluminum next to steel is a no-no right? Non-similar metal touching will eventually corrode.

    • @robertzabinski6083
      @robertzabinski6083 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There a lot of paint between them, which will slow the reaction. The aluminum patch will serve as the sacrificial anode. in so doing, it may slow down the rust of the steel door a bit. The aluminum patch will develop increasing porosity over several years and slowly become more brittle and flimsy. If you get 3 years out of it that's not bad.

I bought an 05 F150 for 300 bucks that came with a beat up snow plow. a lot of rust holes above the wheels. I took black planter bucks that are thicker plastic and cut them out to shape and just riveted them on. honestly probably the easiest fix. again dont do it if the vehicles nice but in my case 300$ is a drop in the bucket for vehicles in todays world.

Word to the wise: avoid having dissimilar metals in direct contact. Try to include paint between the steel and aluminum.

That repair won’t last a very long time from the vibrations the bondo will crack and moisture will penetrate between the upper lip of your repair.

Why do you say it will only last a year or two? Aluminum never rusts, why wouldn't last many many years? Do you use steel or aluminum rivets?

Nice video. I would like to do something similar with a trampoline. Grind off the rust, add some filler, drill some holes and then pop rivet a piece of bendable metal over the rusted area. I will definitely spray paint the new metal and blend it in with the tramp.

To make a Mad Max style, you are right. For instance, in an old pickup, a crown vic or better, à Mustang 2005-2008. And, if the rust comes back you only have to take the rivets of the panel and treat another time the inside and the outside with à mix of oil and wax (toilet ring). It is my way.

If it's a classic car worthy of preserving, then it may be worth a top notch repair. Conversely, if the subject vehicle is a high mileage every day driver that you're trying to make presentable in it's twilight years before it goes to that great scrap heap in the sky, then this technique is an excellent engineering solution with cost and time invested scaled appropriately to the value-add equation.

Why use a $10 can of stop leak when you can buy a new radiator for $450. If you're racing Baha in a $50K truck, yea, replace the radiator if needed. If you're trying to get old Bessy the daily commuter from 180K to 200K on the odo, the stop leak just might be good enough. And good enough can be very "proper" indeed.
Blindingly overspending for a "champagne" fix on a rapidly depreciating "Beer" vehicle is not "fixing it properly". At half time the line backer (utility high mileage vehicle) tapes up his sore ankle and gets back in the game. Only starting pitchers (hot rods and show cars) get relief, and several games rest between starts.
