Yai Saengduean is a 75 year old working elephant just rescued by Save Elephant Foundation. For her entire life, she has served humans in one capacity or another. She has pulled logs for decades. She has walked the streets. She has been the draw to sell Buddha amulets, hair rings, and talismans to the devout. She has worked in the tourist riding camps for many years. She has lived the life of almost all elderly working captive elephants.
It took 15 hours to drive from ChaCheongSoa Province to Elephant Nature Park. On arrival, she began immediately to scratch on the poles of the clinic. It almost seemed like a new and delightful experience. How long since she has been able to do that ? Our vet team scrubbed her body clean of her past. She seems less inclined to scratch at the moment, but she will know, with time, that she has every opportunity to do so whenever she should desire. Scratch posts are a basic right, as are freedom to explore and associate with her own kind. The days ahead are an open door. Saengduean arrived on 13 May 2022. Learn More: saveelephant.org/

On top of all the work she had done all those years, can you imagine her wanting and needing to scratch and couldn't because she was chained? That, in itself, was psychological torture. It would be the same as a human having poison ivy or a bunch of bug bites and couldn't scratch them. I'm so glad she's in a much better place.

She seems like a well adjusted elephant and I’m certain she was well loved. Even though the environment was harsh at times she prevailed. I’m sure the farmers of Thailand did not have an easy life either. In America the mule and horses were mercilessly used and abused too in the forest, in the mines, and crossing the land to become homesteaders. Thankfully across the world we have increased compassion for each other’s and our beloved animal relatives.

My comments are not meant to excuse the abuse of horses which does happen. Elephants are intelligent sentient beings that unlike all other animals understand what death is and morn their dead and have the cognitive ability to point at an object without being taught. To your point about outlawing the private ownership of elephants, they are not going to do that least not anytime soon and not everyone that keeps animals or elephants abuses them . Lek keeps elephants and doesn’t abuse them not everyone would work a 75 year old animal after it had collapsed. There is so much that the government could do to protect them from abuse now just as other countries have done . Laws on what conditions animals can be kept , it’s those laws in other countries that has changed the way animals are treated, although some people will still abuse animals. There is no consequences for the people that are abusing these elephants , nothing to stop them continuing to abuse them.

I agree that no matter the landscape we humans have been cruel beyond imagination to animals throughout the world, but hopefully in many countries, the horrific cruelity is outlawed, there are laws in place trying to protect wildlife, domestic animals from us. But this is not the case in Asia. In Asia, it is a way of life to be cruel to animals. It's acceptable. Along with human trafficking, it is a HARD fact that the whole world knows about, and the thialand government goes along with.

I would encourage everyone that loves elephants to see them, to listen to Lek's words and heart carefully, and to thus learn how to redirect their anger into a lifegiving direction.

@@Go-tee71 and they will always rationale their apathy, cruelity. I believe that we subscribers see a fraction of t he abuse, but on the other hand, I believe we also see only a fraction of what the Ms Leks say and do with these human monsters. I can see Ms lek saying a few choice words to these losers. But it comes down to tolerance of something that is blatantly intolerant. That's the problem with our collective hearts...apathy. we have the truly brave ones like Ms Lek, but they are far and rare in our human species. Apathy is a enemy of God and therefore of His creation.

I think animals and humans having a symbiotic relationship is very important. For example, I can raise only enough chickens to give my family the eggs we need and eventually harvest the meat as well, but make sure my animals are happy in life and have a peaceful and quick death. Animals can help us plow gardens to in return feed and care for them. And I also think animals that kill people shouldn't be put down unless all they eat is people. I think that's a pretty fair trade off. Factory farms are just evil.

You have posted many replies to people (on many, many videos) who say things like 'Thank God . ." or "God bless . . ," telling them to give their thanks or praise to ENP/SEF/Lek who they very much *did thank, commenters who then went on to say "God bless her and you." You are jumping on their comments as if a fly on potato salad, and your "corrections" of these people are wrong. It's inappropriate, ill-fitting. I don't need to be chief of anything to say it's wrong. The only way for commenters not to be targeted by you is to not mention "God," so in effect, you are ordering them to stop; you are putting them under "corrective" pressure, duress. It's not why we're here. It detracts from ENP's/SEF's purpose, and it's ugly. People give thanks and praise to the loving people who are doing their work all the time. If they want to say "Thank God" or "God bless," that is their prerogative, but your "corrective" posts are wrong, and some might say "bullying" as you've established a strong pattern of doing it any time there's the merest mention of "God." It might interest you to know that a great number of the ENP mahouts are, as Lek has said, "christians," going on to say that they gather together on Sundays. We are here for the elephants. May Creator prosper your understanding.
