I love it how a lot of people have a strong opinion about the leaf (and other EVs), whilst have never owned or even been in one.
The 40 leaf is a comfortable, quiet, easy to drive car that'll carry 4 adults with a decent boot. Is it the best ev, no. Will it fulfill every use case, no. But as with everything you buy a product to meet your individual needs. If you don't travel over 100miles on a regular basis its definitely worth a look.
    Great well-balanced review and summary.

Yep. I'm getting a 2020 model on lease for 3 years. I only drive about 40 miles every week when commuting to work so it's perfect for me right now. In 3 years I can see what else is out there.

The sales of leaf show that a car of this size is perfect in the UK. Maybe strong sales for the MG4 could tempt nissan into showing the leaf some love, a CCS plug and some ariya style battery cooling. A third gen leaf (big Micra / Renault 5) would continue the leaf legacy. Thanks for the video Gary.

they've already said the Leaf is dead from 2025, so it's unlikely any major changes will happen to the design

Still fully relevant despite being slightly long in the tooth now. Wife owns a 2018 40kwh Leaf and it's still a great car. When range isn't an issue I'll generally take the wife's Leaf over my 64kwh Kona.

Actual miles is more like 150 in summer and 100-120 in winter. For the 40kw. Can’t charge at opening Tesla chargers. In summer rapid charging twice and munching motorways you’ll see battery temp into the red and can shut down. Had my 2020 40kw leaf for 3 months and quickly got shot as fast as I could and bought the amazing Hyundai Ioniq electric 38.3kw which will easily do another 30 miles more than the leaf and has liquid battery management. Better level floor boot with seats down. Better centre console, infotainment and lane keep and lane follow

No at all true! I get normal range and all EVs in the winter have a lower range and it’s not much diff. I live in Northern Sweden where temps drop to -25 .. range is 150 usually.

He was talking about 100-120 miles in winter and you talking about 150 km. It's almost the same distance if you will convert miles to kilometer. I have Leaf tekna 40kw and this is correct. I have never done more than a 100 miles in winter and in Northern Ireland we never have - 25 C.

After 4 years of 40kwh ownership, I have yet to be tempted to flip it for anything else. Range is good enough for 90% of my needs. Reliability has been 100%. Several non franchised specialists capable of upgrading and repairing the Leaf power train. it's a great new and second hand buy. The perfect first EV, an incredibly underrated car. Just get one and save ££££££

All good points. Leased egolf went back and bought an e+ Leaf that arrived earlier this year. Tried most other affordable electric hatches, wasn't expecting to like the Leaf so much. Ended up with an e+ Tekna for less than the superminis ike the e208 or Corsa or Zoe but way better spec, better range, more space and stuff like adaptive cruise. Range is enough that I barely need to public charge any more and you can aim for the big Instavolt / MFG / Shell sites on a long trip. Showing their age a bit now but really decent cars that make sense if you get the right deal.

Currently I have a 2012 Leaf sat on my drive next to a new 2022 kia EV6. I don't miss the leaf, Chademo was becoming a big issue, especially since Gridserve cut the number of Chademo plugs down at services. Many services went from 2 to 1 chademo plugs and that just meant a lot of queuing all the time as that 1 chademo was shared with a CCS on the same charger. That's the main reason we changed car...

Solid points Gary and I’m the same can’t understand the hate for the Leaf. I’d only ever seen ONE 24kW in my area before we got the 40kW 2 yrs ago. I tend to do the traffic light dash so maybe I’ve converted a few locals cos they’re everywhere here now. Loads of basic factory spec red ones knocking around as GlasGo cabs. And they’re filling their boots on the bank of ~12 rapids under the Kingston bridge. I’ve done Glasgow to London 3 times but it’s not really targeting or sold as a motorway muncher. If Nissan pull their finger out and either upgrade it with a MK3 variant or a replacement they could keep this ideal affordable spacious slot from MG, aside from badge snobbery the MG clearly noses in front on paper.

I changed my first LEAF Tekna 40kw after 3½ years for a new LEAF Tekna E+ 62 kw about 6 months ago.
The mk2 body has an almost identical central section to the mk1, only the front and tail end are different. I'm sure there'll be lots of other bits shared.
I agree with you that the 62kw eases any concerns of range, particularly with aircon, wipers, lights etc on in bad weather.
Also, I would hate a "tv screen" in my dashboard, how this ever was allowed beats me.
      Good video :-)

We have a 30 kWh leaf and despite it’s limited range it has proven itself time and time again over the years. Whether it still represents value for money in 2022 is questionable when the likes of the MG5 can deliver more at a significantly lower price. Nonetheless, we wouldn’t part with our dependable leaf even though we are looking to purchase an EV with more range.

I have a 62kW top of the range Nissan, and I love it. One pedal driving in town (e-pedal) is so relaxing. It also has a 360 degree camera which really helps parking. It's the perfect city car, but still has over 200 miles real world range, and a good size boot. I also have a Kia e Niro. The range is better, but the boot is too small, and there is no one pedal drive option. I would often prefer to use the Nissan over the Kia. With a good dealer discount the Leaf is a real bargain.

I bought a 4 year old Leaf (30KWhr) in May but I won't buy another ... let me explain.
    - My Leaf is PERFECT for what I bought it for. Shopping trips and a general runabout. I get 190km (realistic 160 / 100 miles) . It charges at home, mostly from solar, so it's free to run.
If you want a superb, reliable, runabout then it's PERFECT. It's actually very refined to drive.
    - I WON'T buy another ... because my next EV needs to replace both my Leaf and my ICE car. CHademo charging isn't common and the Leaf doesn't charge fast enough on fast-charging.
My next EV needs >300 mile range, >150KW charging, more load space and the ability to tow a small trailer. I expect it may be a Kia or Hyundai, but in 2-3 years.
BUT .... I love the Leaf. It does exactly what I want. 4,000km and it's cost me about €30 in electricity (that's as close to free motoring as it gets). I highly recommend one if your needs are the same as mine.

The only electric car I've driven was a 2020 Leaf hire car I had for the day, it impressed me, but there was a bit of questionable build quality, I particularly liked how when I put my foot down the volume knob would fly off. Although it didn't creak and the interior didn't feel like it wasn't screwed in, like an A Class hire car I had.
I did find myself feeling a little bit of range anxiety, not least because I couldn't quite work out how to charge it, but I'm also used to a dirty diesel that can drive across the country on half a tank.
Not sure I'm ready to go electric, but I'm certainly not against electric, the Leaf was quiet, comfortable, well equipped and amusing (the volume knob) This upcoming MG4 might tempt me into electric though, the price works for me, range looks good and it doesn't look too bad.

  • @ademcguinness8132
    @ademcguinness8132 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I sat in one when looking to replace our last ICE vehicle...I dismissed it as although I quite like the exterior styling, it was the interior that was the final straw, it felt like something from the 1980's it has dated really badly. That when combined with the charging limits meant it was a No from me.

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Suppose it depends what you're coming from and what your expectations are - my impressions of the interior is that it was pretty typical for a Nissan, not sure what else you'd be expecting.

Like you intimated, most people's first EV was the Gen 1 Leaf - it used to represent great value in the EV world (at least prior to "chip-gate"...!)
My EV journey started that way, too - a 2016 30kWh Acenta.
Plus, I'm of a certain age where comfort matters more than sportiness - so it absolutely suited me....!
I do think the Leaf is (still) quite spec level dependent, at least if you want things like heated seats etc
Now that there will be genuine equivalent-sized competition in the form of the £26k MG4, I wonder if Nissan will simply ditch the Acenta & N-Connecta trim levels and then re-price the Tekna accordingly to compete...? 🤔

My neighbour has a 40kwh leaf and never AC charges it, he uses the free 50kw DC charger not far from my house and does about 30 km a day 7 day's a week. I have a model 3 and never DC charge and are on a 2 hours per day on sat and Sun free charging. I quite often have travel to 2 location within my range there and back, but always use their 10 amp as I'm there for a long time. Basically I've driven lots of miles/ km and never paid a cent to drive anywhere for a long time.
Neighbours leaf is 3 years old now, he could have the same plan as I have, but he won't pay the $1800 install for a home level 2 charger.
I really worry about the longevity of his leaf with what he's doing to it.

Yes the Leaf is still relevant. My daughter has a Leaf 40 and I've been surprised at how good it is. Good ride comfort, handles well and has enough go to embarass most ICE econoboxes. Its a basic trim Acenta model but even so it has loads of kit like 360 degree camera, lane keep assist and intelligent cruise control. If only Nissan has given the long range version CCS charging and modern battery thermal management it could have had a roaring success on its hands..

"there are enough chademo chargers right now" ok. will they still be around in 15 years? coz as far as i am concerned, i can get by just fine with my 30kWh. its not the fastest means of travel but it will get there and there is probably a charger every 30 miles on the major routes. but i wonder if that will still apply by the end of my ownership, even if i am lucky enough to find a well preserved 40kWh battery to upgrade it with. (considering the upgrade will be financially viable) in all other aspects, i wouldn't mind keeping the car around.

Actually imiev was earlier to market but yes mk1 was a proper car. We love ours but not without its shortcomings. Maps and heaters. Chademo is becoming a joke. What would be nice is dedicated chademo so we arent waiting for ccs cars. Often in a service with 3 ccs and 1 chademo the ccs car already charging has chosen the one with the chademo. Like dropping buttered toast. Should land butter side up 50% of the time yet nearly always hairy butter. Feel like the same for the gridserve typical installs.

Sales of new LEAFs in Europe and the USA have just fallen off the cliff (hence why they are in stock) - the current update they announced in the USA model for next year still has a current charging system and vs new EV the charging speed is a bit low (but seeing this is more a low to the mid-range daily driver does it need a faster-charging speed (I think not)) they could have stopped the fall in sales by putting in CCS and given the public a lot more confidence in the car.
As you pointed out air cool batteries are one of the main issues with the car and they could easily update it by using the same design on the van version that has "water" cooled batties and they never had issues.
