Same here, I still love that this was before PJ got together officially. I remember Chris & Eddie talking about how this came about, where Chris was trying to sing both parts in the chorus & Eddie just came in to duet with him. The rest is history & we got a true, simple masterpiece.
I think this song is gorgeous. Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell have 2 different types of hard rock voices... and I love hearing them singing overlapping lyrics. Vedder's voice is smooth and resonant... and Cornell's is raw with some raspiness to it.
Every time I feel like I am too old, I stop and think that I want it both ways. At the same time I am wishing to be younger, I also wish I was just a bit older solely so I could have had a chance to see this stuff live. (Or had parents who were a lot less protective and would let me go to concerts as a teenager). I feel so lucky to have grown up with this kind of music.
There is a song Cornell did with Layne and Alice in Chains called "Right Turn". It's not a smash hit or anything, though still a good tune. All of these guys really were buddies. Seeing how many of them couldn't and didn't make it, despite all that talent you'll probably see never again, truly is a tragedy.

You already know how good he is and as an album opener, wow. He absolutely nails it and makes this the tribute album it is. Just a little history.... Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament Lose their lead Singer Andrew Wood to a heroin overdose just as their debut album is about to be released and ends a potentially great career. Wood’s favorite singer is Freddie mercury and his style and presence as a front man are reminiscent of him. He had the potential of being a real star. Soundgarden members Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron pull together Jeff and Stone to record an album for Wood. Mike Mcready and Eddie Vedder had recently hooked up with Stone and Jeff and had started playing together trying to get something going after the disappointment of Mother Love Bone. This 2 week recording session ended up being a sort of, exploration or stepping stone for Stone, Jeff, Mike and Eddie. They made this album and it put them in a mindset and position to move on and record Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten and the rest is history.

In the 90s, many grunge bands were in a massive fight against TicketMaster. They were jacking up the prices to concerts, which were pissing off the bands. Grunge artists were content to take less money and play in smaller venues, just to get their music out to the people.

In a town of 12,000, they put over $160,000 into various programs for the school, the food banks, the atheletic clubs and every church in the area. I bet if you checked you would find that corporate America gives more than you think.

I was born in Seattle and was just a tad too young to experience the grunge era (born in 85). But watching this video with the Puget Sound etc. is giving me the nostalgia feels, haha.
I wouldn't say incredible - that estimation would go to Chris Cornell - but Eddie Vedder was certainly a very good singer and frontman back in the day.
The Seattle scene was unlike any other. The bands loved, respected, helped, and supported each other. Even the well established Seattle bands like Heart and Queensryche loved and supported the then small fries like A.I.C, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. It truly was a special time in music. Raw, real, open, honest music from people that lived and breathed their art everyday with passion. Just watch the Pearl Jam documentary 20 by James Cameron. You'll see our scene in a whole new light.

Chris still had long hair, and absolutely shredded Jesus Christ Pose. He was grunge Jesus. Pearl Jam came back out and jammed a 20 min. version of Rockin' In The Free World with Neil as the final encore. It truly was a formative religious experience, and one of the best shows I've ever seen. Amazing stuff.

The talent in the early 90's was off the charts, especially in the Seattle music scene. I don't think the grunge era of rock gets the praise it deserves. Imagine having two singers as huge as Chris and Eddie turned out to be singing a duet on the same song now days. Not gonna happen.
Layne is the lead singer of Alice and Chains...Mas Season came after Alice and Chains which Layne is also the lead singer for. Unfortunately, only one album got put out by Mad Season. Eddie Vedder and the guys were in the process of forming Pearl Jam at the time when they were approached by Chris Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron of Soundgarden to do a tribute album to the late singer Andrew Wood of the group Mother Love Bone who had just OD'd. They called the group Temple of the Dog after lyrics from a Mother Love Bone song. They only put out the one Temple of the Dog album.
Qthelost 👍 To add on to this, I’d recommend reacting to/checking out Mother Love Bone -Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns to see their influences and an early example of what grew into the Seattle grunge scene.
From my understanding, Chris wrote the first two songs Reach Down and Say Hello to Heaven in honor of Andrew Wood. He didn't feel that they were Soundgarden type material so he gave them to Jeff Ament to find a good use for. It was then Jeff who suggested getting together members of the two bands and recording them. They ended up writing and recording an entire album as we all know.
The Story about how Eddie ended up on this track is amazing. he was quite literally in the right place at the right time and took a chance. Chris was warming up and wasn't happy with the low notes and Eddie was waiting for Pearl Jam to get their audio check and was sitting off the side of the stage when he spontaneously walked on stage and just started singing counter to Chris. The rest is history.
A great story that is almost entirely untrue. Pearl Jam didn't really exist while Temple of The Dog was a thing. Gossard and Ament were still in Mother Love Bone the death of their singer was the dedication for Temple of the Dogs existence. This band, of which Vedder wasn't a member but just a guest vocalist, would be where they ultimately got to try out Vedder in action and decided to make a band with him. Which would be Mookie Blaylock and not even Pearl jam yet, at the time of this albums release, because they didn't become Pearl Jam until signing with Epic Records. So if anything, Eddie was waiting for Mookie Blaylock to get their soundcheck haha.

@@newcod69 AMEN!!!! Wooden Jesus and Times of Trouble are absolutely phenomenal. Chris's vocals on both are two of my all-time favorite vocals of his from any of his projects. Add Beyond the Wheel from UltraMega OK and you have my Holy Trinity of Chris's vocal masterpieces.

Like a Stone is good but Shadow on the Sun is Audioslave's best song, in my opinion.
The talent in the early 90's was off the charts, especially in the Seattle music scene. I don't think the grunge era of rock gets the praise it deserves. Imagine having two singers as huge as Chris and Eddie turned out to be singing a duet on the same song now days. Not gonna happen.
Layne is the lead singer of Alice and Chains...Mas Season came after Alice and Chains which Layne is also the lead singer for. Unfortunately, only one album got put out by Mad Season. This is what I would call Alternative Rock's soul. I remember this song years ago. I love my blues and R and B, but I can appreciate the deep lyrics and soul from alternative rock.

Eddie Vedder and the guys were in the process of forming Pearl Jam at the time when they were approached by Chris Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron of Soundgarden to do a tribute album to the late singer Andrew Wood of the group Mother Love Bone who had just OD'd. They called the group Temple of the Dog after lyrics from a Mother Love Bone song. They only put out the one Temple of the Dog album.
Qthelost 👍 To add on to this, I’d recommend reacting to/checking out Mother Love Bone -Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns to see their influences and an early example of what grew into the Seattle grunge scene.
From my understanding, Chris wrote the first two songs Reach Down and Say Hello to Heaven in honor of Andrew Wood. He didn't feel that they were Soundgarden type material so he gave them to Jeff Ament to find a good use for. It was then Jeff who suggested getting together members of the two bands and recording them. They ended up writing and recording an entire album as we all know.

he was quite literally in the right place at the right time and took a chance.
Chris was warming up and wasn't happy with the low notes and Eddie was waiting for Pearl Jam to get their audio check and was sitting off the side of the stage when he spontaneously walked on stage and just started singing counter to Chris.
The rest is history.
A great story that is almost entirely untrue. Pearl Jam didn't really exist while Temple of The Dog was a thing. Gossard and Ament were still in Mother Love Bone the death of their singer was the dedication for Temple of the Dogs existence. This band, of which Vedder wasn't a member but just a guest vocalist, would be where they ultimately got to try out Vedder in action and decided to make a band with him. Which would be Mookie Blaylock and not even Pearl jam yet, at the time of this albums release, because they didn't become Pearl Jam until signing with Epic Records. So if anything, Eddie was waiting for Mookie Blaylock to get their soundcheck haha.
Ten released in August of '91, while this album released in April of '91. So the times don't really line up the way your story has it.

Same band, different name, The band played its first official show at the Off Ramp Café in Seattle on October 22, 1990.

Chris Cornell had a way of resonating every word he sung into his followers souls. Then when somebody new came across his voice they too fell in love like his voice was a beautiful whirlpool of notes that had the ability to hypnotize those who heard it.
