- Meghan Vogel (West Liberty Salem HS) had just won the mile (1600m) in 4:58 to become the State Champion for that event. Minutes later, while running the 2 mile (3200m) race, she fell behind and when she saw Arden McMath (Arlington High School) struggle and fall to the track, she ran up to her, picked her up and carried her to the finish line.
Although Ohio High School Athletic Association rules would normally disqualify a runner for receiving assistance, in this instance, the OHSAA chose not to disqualify either runner.
Included in the video is McMath struggling, Vogel picking her up and a post-race interview with Vogel.

Also notice how she put the other girl in front of her when crossing the line. Well done :)
A perfect example of a very good person, and a very good role model for many.
Yes, an honorable thing indeed!
I can honestly say that competitive runners, track or cross country, have the best sportsmanship than any other athletes. My cross country team always cheers everyone on even the competition. This girl is the epitemy of that view. You go girl!!!!!
Either that or cheer
Agreed. You just don't see great sportsmanship anywhere else. It's sad really.
CamColeParker definitely not cheer. I've heard some of those girls say some nasty things to each other.
Beautiful sportsmanship
Megan you are beautiful inside and outside !!!! You go girl, you are class personified !!!!
holy shit she even made sure the girl crossed the line first
What the world needs now.....is love sweet love....well done little lady.
Good job mom and dad!
Bull´s eye comment. Her parents must be very, very, very proud. I would be.
Made me cry.
Last place finish, first place sportsmanship!!
Wow! She's perfect. What a great soul.
What a great lady!
Beautiful woman. I sincerely, wish her lifelong blessings.
The world needs more people like you in it. Beautiful.
That one act of kindness brought tears to my eyes. I am watching it three times now and I am still in tears. That is beauty in motion.
The Human Spirit in all its beautiful glory.Simply a HERO :)
stewart watling Hi Stewart, how are you doing? Good to see you here. :) Would you and Cherie stop folowing me around! LOL
It's okay, I'm only kidding. LOL
Yep, I agree with your comment. Seeing the front runner collapsing and struggling - she looked like a little doe in trouble. My heart went out to her. She looked so helpless - her legs giving way - and at the same time doing her very best.
It brought tears to my eyes. Then the icing on the cake was the second runner came and picked her up to help her. That was really beautiful.
Okay. I better stop now before I get tears in my eyes... again.
Look after yourself.
wolf727 Hey there Mr Wolf :) Your sentiment says a lot about the real you, strong yet vulnerable, which from my experience is what floors the fairer sex ! So that explains Cherie camping here:) I have no excuse other than i mostly agree with everything you utter ! We are like minded in our intentions when we comment, but still uniquely different.Basically i rate you ! He He.Yes i've blubbered my share and am not to proud to admit it,jamnoise often brings a tear to my eye,the bugga :) Geez i may be wrong, probably am,but seeing this girl struggling to reach the end yet persisting may strike deep within you because it brought up similar feelings inside you.I hope that came out right.I know i've seen things that upset me and after thinking deeply about it realised it was a deep subconscious hurt within me from my formative years.I'm probably making assumptions which are way off,but i mean no disrespect.Just thinking out loud from personal growth on my journey.Much love to you my friend,in fact.........ONELOVE :)
stewart watling Dont' worry stewart, I know you mean well. LOL I don't know why seeing this woman falling dwon and then struggling affects me but.. there you go. :) Yep, you take care too. Oh... alright then... (in the words of jamoise) "Onelove". LOL
wolf727 WOW Wolf - that's what being human is all about.
Thank you for making me believe in humanity.
God Bless You Meghan, You could be My Granddaughter anytime. Your a real Inspiration to Everyone who knows You. Be Well Young Lady, from Alaska.
What a classy athlete, you go Meghan!
Wow! Amazing display of empathy!
Great act of sportsmanship right there.
1st class young lady. What she does in life she will be exceptional. Thanks for being such a great example.
She is an example of a great human being with such a great heart. I wish there were more people like that.
you young lady is a winner!!!
That is what sport is really about at the end of the day.
i think Meghan Vogel is wonderful; her selfless action was heroic and an inspiration
I've watched this video over and over all evening. I just cry and cry. Love the interview, too - such humility. So neat to see this get international attention.
We need more stories like this in these times of bickering and fighting.
Meghan Vogel, you're the "Eternal Champion of the Gold-Heart Metal" which no one can take away! And if someone tries, just remind them of this simple, yet beautiful act you did here! And if they're still a bother, just know that you have hundreds of people who support you and believe in you al the way!
What a great person Meghan Vogel is!! Small acts of kindness (like this) are what make the world a better place. Thank you Meghan... you are an inspiration.
A running angel
She did it from her pure heart.... right thing to do...what a finish!
Is the true meaning of sport most of us forgotten. Proud of her, I think she is the true winner.
Even went so far as to make sure she got over the line ahead of herself.
Meghan, with this act, You gave an unforgettable lesson to everybody. This is the true sport. My best appreciations from Italy. You are the best
Made me tear up.... great sportsmanship. I'm a mom and she made me proud. But then again you don't have to be a mother to be proud of this girl
I have seen this video before. She didn't "lose" she won where it counts. Hope for humanity.
This story is over 10 years old...and brings tears to my eyes
That would make her parents very proud. Good on you.
I haven't watched yet, but I know I'll probably cry. I cried at the other video with the guy and his son that was featured in a Visa / Olympics commercial. ::tears::
Meghan Vogel, you didn't just win the 1600m that day, you won at life that day.
What a wonderful person.
Now imagine if the world had politicians who shared this mindset................impossible?
Proud to be a Fan of Meghan Vogel....Cheers from Columbus, Ohio
Now THAT'S a Champion!
She's a real class act! My Daughters attended school with her.
What a class act.
What a great video, it's so nice to see young people being so kind. She was so humble too and so nice to see. Thank you so much for sharing and uploading the video.
She really is fair outside and inside :)
Raised by great parents
imagine how proud her parents would be...you cant buy that.
This chick ROCKS!!!!!!!!
She even put her first!
This was honestly the most amazing thing to see. I was there at this state meet cheering on Meghan and my other teammates, Everybody was crying and on their feet. If you think this is "Stupid" you dont deserve to be an athlete, or American. As athletes, no matter how much we want to demolish the person ahead of us, we are all connected in a way. In basketball, if I knocked a girl down, I help the right back up. It is just something you do.
Meghan just ran the race of her career, life. She is a winner!
Meghan-you are a true leader and winner
this is how sports should befair and equal
You can win a race. You can win honor. 9 years later will still celebrate her honor. Nobody remembers who won the race.
I was right. I cried. :) and yeah, I don't care if the injured player got disqualified. Meghan showed class, respect, honor, altruism, good sportsmanship and many other high character words when she put the injured girl in front of her to allow her to win the race. Incredible admiration to that woman.
class act. and how about the 'ohio high school athletic association' for not disqualifying either runner for breaking the rules. good stuff.
"The good deed WILL BE BACK. Hasta la vista, baby!"
Is wonderful girl, se ve en sus ojos, en su sonrisa y en sus actos.......congratulations...!!!
Faith in humanity has officially been restored! :D
an example of using our *heart* vs using our *mind*.
The heart *feels*, the mind *thinks*.
LOVE rules
Happened to come across this only when a really sad song was playing at the back! :')
great girl..she put the other ahead her first :) god bless u
she's very pretty and with a big heart. lucky guy that marries her
Adorable!
My faith in humanity is restored !
I say you won that day that was amazing to see
really great sportmanship!
She better get a scholarship, I'm talking full ride
A class act
Great job
così si fa!!! brava.
super thats awesome
nice example to set for your peers
Great kid
you r amazing......
amazing...im gald to her help
It's true sportsmanship that is hard to be seen!!
You broke the line, but you surpassed the rule and won our hearts!!!
。。。梅根,妳真棒!Meghan, you're so great!。。。
This great story was covered by Taiwan's media as well !!
The report and TH-cam led me here... ^^

I want to marry a girl who would do something like this.
faith in humanity restored.....
Awesommmmeeee
Go girl..
I would have crossed first then helped her over especially if It would have been my best finish just being honest.Don’t get me wrong she worked hard but so did the other runner.Hats off to her for showing good sportsmanship
Good sport
You are the winner for me
Sweet!!!
That is cool
The Ohio High School Athletic Association made an exception in this one instance and did not disqualify either girl.
An interview with both of the girls
2012 National Sportsmanship Awards - Meghan Vogel
Justin Dorner-Thomas and kelly winters, I can't seem to reply to your posts cause there's no reply button so I'll let you know and anyone else who wants to know in this post. McMath finished 14th, and Vogel finished 15th.
It doesn't matter how you placed it matters is how you raced
Magy not have got you a place in the run. But, your sportsmanship should give you a better feeling in your heart. May make a difference someday in getting that first job in your chosen fieldor in getting that promotion!
Although Ohio High School Athletic Association rules would normally disqualify a runner for receiving assistance, in this instance, the OHSAA chose not to disqualify either runner.
This was a great show of sportsmanship, and I believe they finished last and next to last, just hope any points scored (probably none for 14th and 15th) didn't affect the team placings.
And I'm not a scrooge trying to minimize the gesture at all, so don't crucify me.
@Yung2521 Depends what the prize is I'll say, promotion vs placement in one of maybe 3-4 events this girl may partake in in the track meet. Two diff things
nice
Thats what generally happens. Its a competition, other people really aren't your problem (its the coaches job to take care of a fallen runner). I've lost a race before thanks to a bad fall its no fun.
very nice girl...
The first shall be last and the last shall be first
