UPDATE: Done 1st one, sure tedious NOT as bad as I thought. not as easy as a '70 Ford LTD. The drivers wheel well flap took time to use trim cap tool, they are small and at some point I will be buying some when they wear out. Oil filter strap wont work, I did not have a filter cap so I had to use channel locks. I now have a filter cap for next time [it will also work on 1.5L Escape/same filter]. Had to take two pieces of tin-panel off bottom to access drain plug. If you are a contortionist you can probably leave it on BUT beware it might turn into a dirty oil pond.
New Ranger owner. Wow, that's a little more involved than I hoped. I'll have to do oil changes myself I guess, there's no way I'm letting Ford's oil change monkeys sling oil all over the skidplates and everywhere else. Thanks for the vid.
I can't speak generally for other Ranger owners since I only have 28K miles on my 2019, but zero issues here. I believe some folks have had some rear axle seal issues and a fragile piece in the electric locker breaking.
Where did you find the official ford torque specs for oil pan bolt/ oil capacity couldn’t find it in the owners manual of mine? Not that I don’t trust you just was interested in finding the information myself. Thanks!
Capacities are on page 311 of the owner's manual. Torque specs aren't usually in an owner's manual. Oil plug torque would be around 20 ft-lb, but that is from experience and not a Ford official rating.
HERPY DERPEDY maybe so, just seems compared to my 06 Dakota to take more time and effort with less space to work with, and that’s with a 4.7 V8 in the Dakota.
that's pretty ignorant. Engineers don't get to do whatever they want, they have cost constraints. This was putting an existing engine (2.3 Ecoboost) into a truck which already existed (the T6 Ranger) neither of which were designed with each other in mind. To move the oil filter would have been to completely redesign the engine block (costing tens of millions of dollars) or to come up with a relocator kit which would have added hundreds of dollars to the price of the truck. I can guarantee you they knew damn well this was inconvenient, but they can't change it unless management approves the budget.
Changing the oil filter is no harder than changing the oil filter on my 1999 ford expedition 4x4 w/4.6 triton V8. Therefore this is not a game changer for me.
so it's easy to reach, so not a big deal that they stuffed it in there ? I guess one is S.O.L. if they' have short arms ? If it's hard to turn, is there room to get filter wrench thingy in there to grip it and turn or no leverage ? Any other issues with this engines design and how it's placed in the engine bay that would make otherwise simple repairs more expensive due to having to more this or that out of the way ?
