      I’m going to try growing mine in woodchips. I grow mine in grow bags and stack them side by side with some kind of small trey on the bottom with loose dirt. I fill the trey with water and then pretty much forget about it until they’re ready.
      Nice of you to include your family.

    Had a grand crop using this method- really easy to harvest, and a tenth the amount of weeds that I used to get growing amongst my potatoes. Great stuff!

  • @joanies6778
    @joanies6778 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant! Exactly what I needed to see at this moment. I have a spot where the wind blew away a shed and nothing had been growing there before, for decades. I amended the soil some where I planted tomatoes. They grew ok, but didn't thrive. So, in crop rotation, I was trying to figure what do with that bed, and this is it. I get free woodchips from the city yard.
    Love this, and the kids are such a joy to watch. Good on you as a father giving them great life skills in the garden. Pure gold!

    Also, it's very comforting to see this small slice of life with you and your children. Because you are a good father, gardening, potatoes, these things and more will always bring good memories to your children throughout their lives.

      I love having them involved despite the madness lol. I get them from a local tree surgeon who drops off truck loads for me. You could try growing them in buckets? th-cam.com/video/d2knGZWqwAk/w-d-xo.html

    • @grahamsibbert2412
      @grahamsibbert2412 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your reply. I have one question now. Do you grow Carrots, Parsnips and Swede in woodchip, if so how Dow you start them off. I will certainly try and grow spuds in Buckets. The problem I found with container growing is they are a magnet for ants.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grahamsibbert2412 If you keep the soil moist do you still get ants? I don't grow carrots in woodchips the hard bits can cause them to fork, here's how i do my carrots th-cam.com/video/0_l5S0XXJ70/w-d-xo.html

    • @grahamsibbert2412
      @grahamsibbert2412 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thanks for the tips. I was unaware of the need to keep them moist. You grow Carrots pretty much the same as me soil wise except mine are in the ground not buckets.
      Ref ants and the container grown spuds. They are outside and watered in dry spells otherwise it’s dear old natures job. Perhaps I should keep the soil damp and not leave it to go dry. I have heard that dry containers attract ants. I am going to try your way using woodchips though.
      Again thanks very much. My best to your family and especially the little budding gardeners.

  • @ameliagfawkes512
    @ameliagfawkes512 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a limited number of tree pots in which to grow potatoes, so I'm going to try this with some of the mountain of woodchips we already have, which is normally used as mulch. I'm even wondering if I should use some of the more composted woodchip to top off the buckets (at the moment, there is 4" in the bottom, then the potatoes, then enough compost to cover) as the growth comes through, rather than use precious compost (I make a huge amount, but it all has to be riddled out to be used).

    Asalaamualikum very nice harvest of potatoes. Is there a special kind of woodchip. Or are we woodchip safe for vegetables growing and can you put same kind of woodchip in chicken coop.

    There's a very short list of "almost holy" things we as human beings do. Prayer/worshiping God, helping those in need, simply being kind to our fellow man and... Spending time with our kids while teaching them a most valuable skill! Well done sir!!!

    Did you find out about the "poison" after you spread the mulch? Didn't seem to affect your harvest....I have tons and tons of chips, but even after several years they don't seem to be as well composted as yours.....

      Yes after spreading it I saw the damage on my interplanted broad beans.

      Thank you. Yes absolutely, if you don't have access to the ground to grow in you can use containers. i grow a lot of veg like potatoes and carrots in containers (I've done a few video's on that) take a look at this bed that can be set up using cheap wood, there's a lot you can grow in it th-cam.com/video/zwgl-QRYTng/w-d-xo.html

      Personally i don't think so, but they come out a lot cleaner and are less insect damaged

      I’ll have a look ... there’s always set backs no matter what you do .. like life lol... I’m constantly learning what works and doesn’t ... what makes me laugh is 4 years I’ve been using woodchip for various things then no dig and most thought I was stupid ... now this year their all doing it as they’ve seen how much less of weeds I have and how my plants seem to thrive even though I’m
      Not putting anything in the soil ... have to be an inspiration to make others see lol ... anyway great to see your fab garden/allotment and the enjoyment it’s brings to you and all your followers 🤗🥔

      It's a good method, and by the end of the year they've composted down enough to use as mulch for the rest of the garden. I use any woodchips I can get hold of lol
