  • Narrowboat painting tips from www.johnbarnard.biz
With the undercoat machined and the first coat of gloss applied to the stern section, in this video, which forms the sixth part of a series, John Barnard sets out to share some of the tips used by professional boat painters for getting the best possible results when attempting a full narrowboat repaint. Here, John shows us how to go about machining the first coat of gloss and recaps on how to get the best finish using a roller and brush.
John runs a traditional narrowboat painting business from his base at Debdale Wharf near Market Harborough.

Great video's! Couple questions if you find the time to answer I'd greatly appreciate it. What brand and type of gloss paint are you using in these series of videos. Also how would I judge what grit sandpaper to use the manufacturer suggest 320 between coats

Thanks for the thumbs-up. For this boat we're using Epifanes Yacht Enamel. As you say, the manufacturers often suggest 320 grit in their datasheets and that's normally quite OK. We generally use either 320 or 400 - you just have to judge for yourself what does the job best depending on the equipment you're using.

Hi John regarding the tape can you leave it on for the whole painting process or do you need to renew between coats? I'm currently doing mine and am not sure if it will pull the paint off bearing in mind it's outside in the open. I've got low tack frog tape is this any good or can you recommend an alternative? Thanks

We use Tessa tape and we leave it on for the whole job. I cannot guarantee its use outside but I have in the past left panel outside with tape on and it has been fine. Bearing in mind the tape gets a lot of paint on top of it which acts a protection.
