El libro es una de las novelas de Wessex de Hardy , todo ello en una ficticia Inglaterra rústico o rural.
Argumento: En una feria de campo cerca de Casterbridge, Wessex, alentado por el alcohol, un joven decide subastar su esposa e hija, Elizabeth-Jane, a un marinero, por cinco guineas . Una vez que pasa la borrachera del día siguiente, es demasiado tarde para recuperar a su familia, sobre todo porque su renuencia a revelar su propia mala conducta le impide llevar a cabo una búsqueda efectiva. Cuando se da cuenta de que su mujer y su hija han desaparecido, probablemente para siempre, él jura no tocar el licor de nuevo por todos los años que ha vivido hasta el momento.

I read this book in 1983 in my bachelor course...the story had really touched my heart then...I remember crying at the end of the story...today after such a long time in 2024, I am watching this great story movie and enjoying...one my best novels!!😍
What a great masterpiece of literature this is, both the book and the film. Thomas Hardy had a profound knowledge of human psychology.
The opening and the music with Michael, Susan and Elizabeth Jane walking towards the fair is really moving.

Had to read the novel for English grade 12; still remember it well; a powerful piece of literature, especially the tragic ending. Couldn't have picked anyone better than Ciarin Hinds for the part of the Mayor.

One of the most moving novels by Hardy that really touched my heart. Hardy mirrored palpably in the story about human frailties and how individual reacts when his/her self worth is challenge. Henchard allows hatred and envy to reign in his heart when Farfrae threatens unwittingly his authority and popularity; thus making strings of arbitrary and preposterous decisions that led to his downfall and tragic end. Well, I cannot judge Henchard for what he has or has not done but we can learn many things from his story.

Have only seen Ciaran Hinds as Captain Wentworth in Persuasion, a movie I loved. He was so good in this. Hard hearted, unbending, a complete turnaround of a role. Jodhi May was also wonderful as Elizabeth. She was amazing in Daniel Deronda and The Turn Of The Screw.
Thomas Hardy, my favorite author next to Austen. He obviously suffered major depression but had a way with words and stories of the time no one has matched
Depression? I didn't know that but I'm somehow not surprized. How would he not suffer? Same with Dostoevsky to be honest: a perceptive, intuitive genius surrounded by supersticious traditionalist fools with the occasional vulture who's generally better off in life for having been treacherous where another was honest. Tolstoy and Dostoevsky are a match in my reckoning, but Thomas Hardy's right up there with the two of them: when I read his material I can absolutely picture these exact people existing and their relationships with each other would be none but these, especially at that given time. I wouldn't change a word of Thomas Hardy or Jane Austen, it enriches us that such people walked the earth and breathed the air that we do.
Ciara’s also played as Rochester in Jane Eyre. Loved him in this adaptation.

We studied this book as school boys.....how silly of them.... of course we hadn't a clue. Now at 76 I am so moved at its brilliance....how deep, what insights Into human types....we know them all.
Hardys great understanding of people and empathy is timeless. The characters could be transported to the modern world and would still ring true as real people.

Watched this in Hr. Sec. School back in 2011. Our lecturer showed us for learning purpose. This is the novel we studied in class 12.

¡Excelente! Te agradezco mucho que hayas subido esta película, subtitulada. Hasta ahora vi solo esta primera parte y me prendió muchísimo. Los meandros del argumento son muy interesantes para alguien de nuestra época, además de que pone en juego muchísima polémica sobre una doble moral y la vieja cuestión de si puede haber alguien totalmente bueno o malo. En fin, ¡un placer!

Es una miniserie llena de humanidad , nuestros pecados , las palabras , y nuestros actos tienen consecuencias y a veces herimos a seres inocentes y nobles. I studied Thomas Hardy' s books under Tragedy in college. He made one mistake because of his drinking habits and his temper but paid a heavy price for it. Thank God is not like us humans. He forgives us over and over again.

As a woman, and of african descent, I am *so *grateful to be living in modern times. To be forced to rely on men, forced to bear and raise children, and to be sold as a possession! ugh.
I am doing my research thesis in this novel and my thesis statement is ''Narcissistic Traits in Michael Henchard'' I conclude that it is his narcissism that determines his action and even he sees his own reflection in a pond,towards the end of novel, at a place called Black Water.Narcissus also saw his own reflection in water and fell in love with it. In order to requit his love, he drowned in the water and so in this way, the phenomenon and term of narcissism was coined.Narcissus was a Greek god, known for beauty.

I always thought that the doll was a crude caricature of his true self and it turning up showed how he couldn't escape from what he truly was. But there is clearly a suggestion of the narcissist myth about the scene.
He is a man who makes poor choices on selfish impulses, not sure he is selfish enough to be a narcissist.

My favourite Thomas Hardy story, were about due another adaptation, it's been 12 years since the last.

Is it just me or do Mr. Farfrae & Elizabeth-Jane have just marvelous chemistry ( 23:00 and 45:23 )? Just a couple of looks or being together in the frame lights it up and makes my heart beat faster. It's a shame that their romance only blooms at the end. I always felt that they were meant to be from the beginning but bad luck/poor decisions keep then apart for so long.

Hardy was a novelist of immense power, who eschewed happy endings, at least in his later major works. Henchard's monstrous deed comes back to destroy him, no matter how repentant he is. After "Jude The Obscure", Hardy realized that he had said all he had to say about the cruelty of life, and turned to verse for the remainder of his long literary career.

Poor, poor Henchard. You can't hate him. Pity him, pity him deeply, but you can't hate the poor man.
That's pretty much how I feel about it too: I think the poor lowly dude was insidiously deceived into thinking that moral integrity and a certain degree of sophistication are worth something in this world. He became a successful man when he threw off the chain of a woman that could no longer gratify him in any way, yet continued to be a burden on his resources and the quandary of a child - from which by definition neither profit nor pleasure can ever come, at least not to any normal man. He was torn down and mentally incapacitated when he tried to "take responsibility".
Interesting how accurately you put it: you CAN'T hate him. All good intentions behind a commoner's basic sanguine pride with a bit of Victorian sensibility to boot - and I absolutely HATE that Victorian vibe because it makes hostility of honesty and virtue of hypocricy: all in the name of "good manners". For me, Michael Henchard's tragedy is that somewhere closer to the surface than really deep down in the recess of his soul, he realises he's a commoner, hates it and it eats away at his very being: and he's kind of despised for not being noble, yet trying to appear "on the aristocratic level" - which he's intelligent enough to be aware of. In a sense, he has blue-blooded dreams in a red-blooded body. Honesty is this: you play the honest card, the rest swindle, your loss. In order to redress the balance we'd probably need to raise Marc Antony or Lord Cromwell from the grave to punish the wicked with a swift stroke of the sword so that the honest can live in peace... and in a day or two there may be too few remaining to make for a sustainable economy :)

Fine, let me explain: is a child a sexual object to a normal man? Much less - his own child? What is it then, a financial asset? So what the hell does he need one for, seriously?
So, how long is a normal man satisfied with one partner, how long until she stops having that initial effect on his physical senses and their sexual relationship descends into mediocrity? And towards non-existence, inevitably. But he still has to "pay for his family", isn't that right?
So... yes, he's a fool for having created that family, even more so - at such a young age, and it IS his own fault. But I'm not arguing against that: simply that it's a burden and a very ungrateful one at that. If your son stands to inherit the crown of England and his last name is Tudor, then yes, have as many heirs as it takes, you're a dynasty. What's this fool up to when he hasn't got a penny to his name that he needs to sell his wife for five pounds? (No doubt much more at the time than now - but come on, really!)

No one would have been disturbed in Roman times, believe me. And yes, DO PLEASE look up a few people tat have done hard years in the Russian Army and tell me what we base our evaluations of people on and why, because the world ain't any more civilized now than it was back in 50AD. If something can serve as a lethal weapon, it obtains an even higher evaluation than any sexual object - because it is a source of power: then you can basically do whatever the hell you want and go unpunished - and some of us have no other recourse.
As for children, don't worry, no need. I am neither aesthetically perfect nor of any noble or origin and they would be harmed to be brought into this world by a plain proletarian - however smart, however well-off, however good-intentioned. It would literally be a punishment, whether I pretend otherwise or not. I have nothing to give a child: neither good genes nor any position of advantage in society. Better not be stupid.
I'm just being honest here. Nobody took Sigmund Freud for a madman that he basically said the same thing about 100 and something years ago, I mean that it's all sex and violence. The purer the form, the better the outcome: this world needs more unapologetic murderers and the scandalous whores to upset the balance a little by reducing the numbers of corporate slaves out there and rebuilding coherent empires, and pretenders and moral apologists make me so sick I want to shoot on automatic again, even though I'm well past my best years at 35.
It's masses of people that suffer from delusions that weigh the world down, more than any tyrant, more than any famine. People take everything from you and fill your mind with pipe dreams lest you realize how screwed you are and the majority continues to SERVE them. And to me, that's infuriating. In viewing Mayor of Casterbridge, I am evaluating the extent to which the film is true to the book and the extent to which the film portrays the Victorian period. The film, “A Mayor of Casterbridge” based on Thomas Hardy’s novel, is an emotional rollercoaster through which we experience the turmoil that comes from hiding secrets and the hazards and difficulties they experience in love. The three hour movie is long because it develops a sense of pathos for a man who brings his own demise. The protagonist, Michael Henchard, tries his best to hold on to whatever happiness he has left; unfortunately, this means he is a compulsive liar. As much as the truth unravels and Michael tries to cover it up, we can’t help to feel sorry for him. Although I already knew what was going to happen in the movie after reading the book, the emotion of just watching all the details of events happen just made it so surreal that I couldn’t hold back the tears at the end. The use of his will at the end of the film was the perfect summary of his character. It shows how lonely he is, but also how he basically pushes people away from himself, causing his loneliness, sadness and misery. The film is 100% true to the book, which is probably why the film was three hours long. Apart from following Hardy’s plot, the way the characters are portrayed is definitely on point. The portrayal of the Victorian era is also great as far as costumes/clothing, reputation, social class, and gender roles. The scenery and buildings in the film are great portrayals of the time. Although the book is great in telling the story itself, the film as a whole adds so much more to Henchard’s sorrowful life.
Thelma Sandoval I know the book well, read it several times and I am a massive Thomas Hardy fan. Right at the outset, I have to say the scene in the tent lacks passion. Susan yells at him and throws her ring back at him.

Ciaran Hinds' portrayal of Henchard tears at my heartstrings too.....the tension created by his brooding conflicted soul and his strong masculine physical presence...gravitas he has in spades!....is palpable and unbearable at times.....the story burns through one's soul....and it all began when Hardy read a report of the incident in the paper!!....thank you for commenting so well and to the one who put it up....

Not a fan of Thomas Hardy - his stories are heavy going and dark and grim --- but I absolutely love this particular novel. And Ciaran Hinds does an excellent job of being the Mayor of Casterbridge.
His earlier novels are much lighter.
