And Rosanna Arquette's cameo as a drug dealers wife with a needle fetish is hilarious if you think about it. I love her look of visceral anticipation as Vincent plunges the needle into Mia.

Back during World War II, when they were developing the atomic bomb, the scientists doing the theoretical calculations dealt with some very short time periods, like 10 or 15 billionths of a second. This was used so much they decided to come up with a name for that time, So they use the word “shake”, as in a shake of a lambs tail. There you go, now you can go out and win bar bets.
Marcellus was there with Vincent to watch Butch’s apartment. Judging by what he was carrying while crossing the street he had just bought himself & Vince some coffee & breakfast. So it wasn’t odd for Marcellus to be there at that moment. Loved the reaction.

Makes kind of sense, but then again not. Why would the big boss be there in person in Butch's apartment? I feel like he would be in his mansion just waiting for his goons to get him and to get the news, not there in person getting his hands dirty. And sounds a little off Marcellus going to get the coffee for Vincent and himself, would have thought Vincent would be the one running errands if one of them were doing it. But again, makes sense with him being not too far from the aparment, so.. Perhaps.

The dance is a throwback to the dances of the 60s like The Twist. We weren't dancing like that in 1994. But they are in Jack Rabbit Slims which is a stylised homage to the golden age of Hollywood
In 1996, I moved to Philly. Someone opened a “Jackrabbit Slims” diner there near 2nd & South Streets. I lived just a block away so I ate there a couple times. The food was good. The Pulp Fiction motif was good. Unfortunately the service sucked and they closed less than a year later.
John Travolta (Vincent) became famous in Saturday Night Fever in the 70s, which was Disco Dancing. Tarantino said that there is no way that he would NOT have Travolta dance in his movie. BTW, I LOVE Swing Dancing. I love experiencing a woman being thrilled when I swing and lift them.
One of the themes of the movie is redemption. All of the characters get a second chance after a somewhat selfless act. Vincent chooses not to sleep with Mia and saves her life after she OD's. ------ Butch is allowed to leave LA alive after saving Marcellus. And Jules helps Honey Bunny and Yolanda after the "act of God." He reads the tea leaves and leaves the gangster life. ------ Vincent doesn't, and he pays with his life after running into Butch whom he previously, and the needlessly insulted is made in his direction.
It also can't be understated how groundbreaking this film was at the time. Granted, I was only a kid when it came out so I saw it on VHS later on, not in the theaters, but when this came out, it was like a huge cultural shift happened overnight. You have to consider the time and context back then, especially in regards to mainstream Hollywood films. Popular films back then, characters didn't really talk like this in movies. It was much more formulaic "movie" talk. Not talking crap about these type of movies, as I love them too for what they are, but the big blockbusters were these Schwarzenegger/Stallone, Die Hard action movies and the characters all talked in very general, broad ways. Then Pulp Fiction comes along and 90% of the movie is just dialogue. And not just dialogue, but super intricate, specific "non-movie-ish" dialogue about Burger King and Royales with cheese, foot massages, watches up the ass, etc. People simply weren't used to characters TALKING like this on screen.
I know I'm late to the conversation, but adding onto what you mentioned too - the movie's varied timelines were also pretty groundbreaking for a film at the time as well. A majority of movies were very linear in storytelling, with scenes setting other scenes up. But Pulp Fiction treated the breaking up of events out of order as another plot device to further push potential narratives, such as the idea of "divine intervention". So many analyses and theories have been written about how events out of order really highlights instances where divine intervention WOULD have changed the outcome (Jules sticking with Vincent instead of having his epiphany, etc). It's really was a movie that was ahead of it's time.
In light of John Travolta’s iconic dancing in Saturday Night Fever and Grease, (and the fact that his career had been dormant for years leading up to this film), you have no idea what a huge deal it was that he danced in this movie.
1:35:57=This movie took place over 30 years after the civil rights movement, so it may not have been a factor. And, The Wolf referring to the girl as a "character" isn't meta. When someone calls you a character, it means you have a unique or memorable personality (i.e. "That guy's a real character").
A detail that gets missed is that Butch's girlfriend is very very likely pregnant. It's why she talks about having a potbelly, why she orders that insane breakfast and why Butch HAS to go back for the gold watch. He's going to have a child and wants to pass the heirloom watch on to them.

I saw this the day it came out, seen it so many times since that I've grown a bit jaded about it. Which is why this reaction was so great! You made me see it with fresh eyes. There are so many "easter eggs" hidden all over this movie, and you guys were picking out stuff I had never seen before (or seen anyone else point out). You were catching on to recurring themes. all kinds of stuff, it was really inspiring to see. This movie isn't for everybody but it hits the sweet spot for others! One thing is for sure: if all he ever did was this movie, his position in film history would be secured because it totally changed the game in the 90s and was endlessly imitated. The best was another one with Travolta, "Get Shorty". And in a way, "Boogie Nights" (another one of the best films of the 90s), is part "Pulp Fiction", part "Goodfellas" and part "Dazed And Confused"......definitely three of the best (and most influential) films of the 90s!
P.S. DEFINITELY do his next one: "Jackie Brown"! I think both of you are going to like that one! Possibly Samuel Jackson's greatest ever performance, Robert De Niro, lots of other great actors....and a kick ass Pam Grier as Jackie Brown. Don't sleep on that one! I hope you're just going in order because that's the Tarantino movie I rewatch more than any other.

Something about Yolanda pointing a real gun at Vince and a finger gun at Jules is the funniest thing in the world to me. I can't even explain what's so funny about it, but I've seen this movie a couple hundred billion times and I still can't see that image without bursting out laughing. I also love when Jules tells Vincent to shut the f-ck up and she just kind of tacks on "...chuddup" like a little kid whose nose is full of snot from crying. I think it's something about Amanda Plummer's acting. She's so freaking good in this movie. She's so massively overlooked and underrated it's criminal. It really is one of the greatest comedic performances ever. She embodies her character perfectly in every tiny mannerism and inflection and brings so much subtle detail to the scene. She has like four lines in an extremely talky scene and still manages to steal it. You can't stop looking at her. It boggles my mind that Tarantino didn't cast her more often.
"Because you are a character" is an expression, means you are interesting, unusual, or amusing ("he's such a character"). It's not about breaking the 4th wall about her being a character in the movie. It basically says "because you are a character (amusing, interesting type) doesn't mean you have character (honour, integrity, etc. as in "this builds character").
You really should add True Romance to your list. Tarantino wrote the script for it. It's a fun 1993 movie directed by Tony Scott. If you don't include True Romance, you're missing out on a key Tarantino story and a fun cast. Don't look up the cast though. You'll want to be surprised.

I love his writing, but I must admit JB is probably my favourite. Although he didn't write the story it's still full of great QT dialogue. Great story, great cast, great soundtrack. I see so many people that think it's his worst movie but I find it endlessly rewatchable.
that was Wallace's submachine gun in the boxer's apartment. Wallace left it there when he went for lunch and was bringing it back to Vincent. It's why Vincent didn't react to the noise in the apartment, he thought it was Marcellus Wallace. It wasn't just whimsical luck running into Wallace.
I'll never forget that, when I saw this in the theater, the people in front of me had their kids with them. They were SO bored. Then the gimp came out and they had SO many questions for their parents. It was very annoying, but in retrospect, pretty funny.

Reservoir Dogs is his first feature film as a director (he wrote True Romance and Natural Born Killers, another one you really need to watch!) and it's the one which got him noticed in the industry but Pulp Fiction is the movie who made his popularity explode all over the world. This film is considered a revolution in filmmaking for its unique language and its non-chronological editing; since its release in 1994, Tarantino became one of the most influential filmmaker around and everyone tried to mimic his style of writing and directing. This movie actually made him a rockstar! All of his movies have a lot of details and references to other films to catch up, in terms of shots and situations; he's famous for taking different genres and reinterpret them in his own way, to the point that I think it's fair to say he invented his own genre. If you keep watching his movies, you will also get many references to its own previous and following ones (NO SPOILERS!!!). He's considered a master of dialogues and character building. Fun facts about QT: 1. YES he's got a fetish for feet and you're gonna see a lot of it in his next movies 😁 2. One of his directing signatures is his "trunk shots"; let's see if you can catch them all! 3. He uses the N word a lot and for that reason he's been accused to be racist but if you stick to his work you're gonna understand how this statement is far away from the truth; he grew up in a black enviroment and loves blaxploitation movies and, above all, his black characters are always the coolest and, most of the times, the heroes of his stories. 4. Tarantino is also known to be a director who revived forgotten actors who were stars before but for some reason got cut off the industry, basically giving them a second career, like John Travolta. 5. His filmography counts 9 movies so far, he's about to shoot his 10th which he said to be his last (everyone hopes it's not). 6. He's a film geek, he knows EVERYTHING about every fu***ng movie ever released in cinema You might love him or hate him but it's undeniable he's one of the most important filmmakers of the history. Hey Gabbi and Caleb, someone broke down to me that the "Pulp Fitction" movie is a in which each person is the protagonist in their own story. So when each story is happening the story comes from their point of view. ------ When Jules is in the room speaking to Brad, it's from his point of view. ------ When Butch has to go back for the watch and saves Marcellus it's from his point of view. So although the character and storyline interconnection, it all depends on the lens though which it is viewed.
This was a good reaction and great discussion. This is a great film. It can be enjoyed on the surface, but if you're willing to explore the symbols and themes you get so much more.

holy heck! ive watched pulp fiction nine zillion times, ive seen it more times than any other film ive ever seen and thought about every scene from a million angles but ive never thought about how Vincent couldn't wash the blood from his hands for the reasons you two have described. that was deep. love that.
An extraordinary film. It makes masterful use of all the resources available in each frame, not one of them is unnecessary. Each word is perfectly well used and thought out, it doesn't need to tell us more or less. And a luxury cast, including Tarantino himself. It doesn't *need to show us tits to validate itself or attract* us, it goes far beyond those narcissistic banalities. It's worth what it's worth for being the masterpiece that it is. And I love it for that. I never get tired of watching it. I appreciate Tarantino's balls, it's one of those movies that will never be made again.
This movie hit the world like an asteroid. It was the coolest movie in the world for at least 2 years until SCREAM showed up in 1996. It introduced most of mainstream America to the idea of film as an art form. *ANSWERS:* PULP FICTION is a Postmodern film: it references media that preceded it. Most film in the 90s was Postmodern, and plumbed a massive multi-generational pop culture that people would've been familiar with in the days before the Digital Revolution fragmented everything. Most of this movie refers to other movies and TV shows; they were designed to be noticed by the audience. "A Band Apart" is a reference to A BANDE APART (Band of Outsiders), a film by Jean-Luc Godard about amateur thieves. Godard was a legendary member of the French New Wave, one of the most significant film movements of the 20th century, and most film students/geeks were in awe of it. Non-linear storytelling was a key feature of many New Wave films, especially Godard's. Tarantino's first 2 films were very New Wave influenced (the "sporadic style" you mentioned), but he abandoned it for pastiche starting with KILL BILL. The dance scene was a reference to A BANDE APART where the main characters just decide to dance in a club for no reason other than to amuse themselves ( th-cam.com/video/O4TYQkkAvk8/w-d-xo.html ) The glowing suitcase is a reference to the atomic suitcase in KISS ME DEADLY (also the car trunk in REPO MAN ( th-cam.com/video/Yx6Y0tuoIaI/w-d-xo.html )). The original contents were supposed to be diamonds, but because they used diamonds in RESERVOIR DOGS, they decided to just not show the contents and let it be mysterious. That's it. They didn't bother thinking about the interpretations for it and just left it for people to decide. Jules says "My name's Pitt" so he could say "and your ass ain't talkin' your way outta this shit." ("Pitt" and "shit" rhyme) Just like "My name's Paul and this is between y'all": it's a statement phrased as a rhyme to be cool. Vincent & Mia didn't win the trophy, they stole it. You hear the radio mention that the trophy was stolen later in the movie. Heroin and cocaine are opposites of each other, so snorting heroin--especially that pure--would start shutting down your musculature, including cardiac muscle, unless you neutralize the binding action of the opiate receptors in your body. But for a number of reasons on top of that, Mia wouldn't have survived. Mia mistook the heroin for cocaine because it was in a baggie instead of a black balloon (Lance said he was out of balloons). Heroin also makes you constipated, which is why Vincent's always in the bathroom trying to take a dump; when the heroin wears off, the plumbing wakes up. The "divine intervention" occurred just after the briefcase was opened with the "666" code. So there's an interpretation that it may have been "infernal intervention" that spared Jules & Vincent, not divine. It's not anarchy, it's irony. All of these stories are conventional plots of 20th century noir (the "Pulp Fiction" of the title) but before they can resolve, they get derailed and sent off into a completely weird tangent. That's what Tarantino was doing: reinventing traditional stories with unorthodox, absurd diversions. The 90s was drenched with irony--flippant, dismissive, benign trolling for the sake of being weird--so a lot of movies of the period reflect this anti-earnest sensibility. The juxtaposition of mundane talk and gratuitous violence is one of the signs. While your observations are poignant, Tarantino didn't invest that in the film--he famously hates subtext, and is telling stories very straightforward, but with lots and lots of little digressions and clues that don't mean much.

To protect the expensive gym floors from scuffs from hard-soled shoes they usually required the participants to leave their shoes at the door. This lead to them being known as "Sock-hops". It makes sense that a 50s-themed restaurant might follow the same custom for a dance contest.
The woman with the piercings (Vincent's drug dealer's wife) and the guy hiding in the apartment who shot at Jules and Vincent and missed were brother and sister in real life, Rosanna and Robert Arquette of the Arquette acting siblings. Two more siblings, Patricia and David are also actors. Robert Arquette as he was credited in this film later transitioned to female and changed his name to Alexis, and Alexis died in 2016 at the age of only 47 as a result of complications from HIV.
Very cool that you caught the theme about the watch. Wehn we first see him waking up we hear and see bells and clocks and the first word spoken is "time"! Another cool details is Wallace was actually with Vince waiting for Butch in his flat and went out for food
Wallace wasn't going out for breakfast at that area randomnly. Because Jules had quit, he went himself with Vincent at Butch's house to wait and get him. But at some point as Butch wasn't coming, he left for some nearby cafe to bring coffee (that's why he holds two coffees), and left Vincent on standby. Anyway, that's why Wallace was some blocks away from Butch's house, and crossing the street (to go back there with the coffees)

This was fun to watch (for me, maybe the 10th time). During the Pawn Shop scene - you made the same observation I did: as much as anything, this movie is about how the power equation between people can change, change, and change again.
I love how Tarantino has 'Honey Bunny' say her line 1 way in her view, but when the line is repeated at the end it's said slightly differently coz it's then from Jules' perspective! Vincent's cousin is a character in Reservoir Dogs. Butch is the one who scratched Vincent's car. They never won the dance contest, they stole the trophy. You can hear someone on the radio talking about it when Butch is walking in the alley on the way to get the watch. Some people think it is Mr. Wallace's soul in the briefcase. Vincent is always on the toilet b/c it's a symptom of his heroin addiction.
Quentin Tarantino is a postmodernist filmmaker. His style defies the norm of what a “movie“ is by have a use of nonlinear storytelling, dialogue, that is not integral to the plot (on immediate appearance), and layered metaphors/self-references.
I’ve seen a reaction to this movie where they asked what was in the case and they looked it up and said they quit in. Tarantino was the same thing and said “what is in the case is up to each individuals person interpretation. So it’s whatever each person who wants to be in the case.
Hey Caleb and Gabbi, In an interview with AFI, Tarantino explained his inspiration for Pulp Fiction. ----- Basically, he was thinking about classic plotlines from old pulp fiction stories (e.g. the henchman who is tasked with taking the boss's wife out "but don't touch her!". ------ The boxer who is instructed to throw a fight but doesn't and then has to run from the mob, ----The hitmen showing up to kill some target or 'nother at the beginning of an action movie before the story cuts to the hero who will eventually run into the hitmen and fight them) He wondered what would happen if all the stories happened in the same city, at the same time, over the course of one day, and some of the characters from the stories had connections to characters in the other stories. ----- Also, in the hitmen story, he wondered what would happen if, instead of cutting to and following the hero's story after the hitmen shoot and kill their target, we followed the hitmen through the rest of their day and saw what they were up to. ------ None of the plots are original (Tarantino called them "old chestnuts") but how he approached them and wove them together was original. And genius. Now the outcomes of these chestnuts are turned on their head, this is where Tarantino get really original.

The Norwegian translators really goofed for this movie. "It's not a motorcycle, it's a chopper". The translator wrote (in Norwegian): "It's not a motorcycle, it's a helicopter".

I am impressed with how many elements in the film the two of you break down. This movie is rich with symbolism and meaning, and very little gets past the two of you. Well done! I am excited to see what you get out of other Tarantino films. This may have been mentioned already in the comments, but I've read that the glowing in the suitcase represents Marcellus Wallace's soul, which he sold to the devil, and the soul is removed from teh back of the head, which is why Marcellus always has a prominent band aid on his neck.
That band aid was just random thing because that actor cut his head. Completely random "accident". And in the movie in that case in realitywas a lightbulb. But it should symbolize anything each person wanted it to be.
Marvin worked for Wallace and was a plant into that group, that's why they didnt kill him at the apartment. Mia and Vince didnt win the trophy, they lost and then stole it. That was edited out and never made it on screen. Most reactors blame Vince for leaving the gun in the kitchen at Butch's. You did good not to do that because it was Wallace's gun he left to go get coffee. Wallace walking in front of Butch was taken from the movie Pyscho with Marion and her boss. It's almost like you two have never been to America not knowing two shakes of a lambs tail to means being quick or Mr Wolf calling his GF a character (as in you're a real character meaning unusual and interesting) has nothing to do with being a character in the movie. You guys read way too much into things. Like Jules eating bacon or the wife is named Bonnie. Jules calls the bank robber Ringo because before they edited it all out, Jules called each of the characters he met by a Beatles name (John, Paul, George, Ringo).
What’s great about this film is you have gangsters talking about real life everyday stuff, like do foot massages mean anything, and making pop culture references, and of course Jules moral awakening. Great stuff:)

Legend has it that Marcellus Wallace sold his soul to the Devil. When the Devil takes your soul, he rips it out from the back of your neck, hence the bandage on his neck at the beginning of the movie. When Vincent and Jules retrieve the case and everyone is wondering what's inside....that's Marcellus Wallace's soul. He sent his minions to get his soul back. And when that guy pops out from the bathroom shooting, God protects Vincent and Jules with divine intervention...
Very interesting observations and comments. I love it. re: the suitcase, to expand on your point... The contents of the suitcase were something precious enough to risk crossing an evil man like MW. Something valuable enough to kill for and risk dieing for, even with a gun in your face.
The thing I've realized from watching reactions like this is that there are a lot of people who view movies as a puzzle or a game they need to solve. Even when it's not a mystery, it feels like a lot of people are trying to crack the case. These two spend so much time trying to solve Pulp Fiction that they end up missing the point. Like most movies, everything is eventually explained in Pulp Fiction, so there's no point to try to solve the puzzle ahead of time. When you turn it into a game, you miss the dialog and context clues that reveal the whole story. Just watch the movie and enjoy.
True Romance is also another GREAT and ICONIC film in my opinion that Tarantino wrote, he didn't direct or produce though, but that has a bunch of 90s stars and was before any films he had more control over, Kristian Slater, Patricia Arquette Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, and also early somewhat minor acting roles for Samuel Jackson, James Gandolfini and Brad Pitt, and Val Kilmer has a voice-over only role.
You can almost feel the warmth of Gabriella, she seems like a great person. I really enjoyed your reaction to Pulp Fiction. I would love to see you guys do more sci-fi. Like Dune, Arrival, Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2049, you can have very good conversations out of those films. You guys seem more suited for Sci-fi and thinking movies.

It's funny seeing these 1st time watchers' expectations. They talk about what they think is going to happen that are typical movie tropes and Tarantino doesn't fulfill those often. It's one of the best things about his movies. I don't know what he's going to do with his scenes, how he's going to build it and where it will end up. It's a great thing to watch a movie and not know how the story and the characters will go. Not all his movies are great imo (Hateful 8) but they all strung me along wanting to know what's going to happen next.

And Rosanna Arquette's cameo as a drug dealers wife with a needle fetish is hilarious if you think about it. I love her look of visceral anticipation as Vincent plunges the needle into Mia.

In 1996, I moved to Philly. Someone opened a “Jackrabbit Slims” diner there near 2nd & South Streets. I lived just a block away so I ate there a couple times. The food was good. The Pulp Fiction motif was good. Unfortunately the service sucked and they closed less than a year later.

One of the themes of the movie is redemption. All of the characters get a second chance after a somewhat selfless act. Vincent chooses not to sleep with Mia and saves her life after she OD's. ------ Butch is allowed to leave LA alive after saving Marcellus. And Jules helps Honey Bunny and Yolanda after the "act of God." He reads the tea leaves and leaves the gangster life. ------ Vincent doesn't, and he pays with his life after running into Butch whom he previously, and the needlessly insulted is made in his direction.

It also can't be understated how groundbreaking this film was at the time. Granted, I was only a kid when it came out so I saw it on VHS later on, not in the theaters, but when this came out, it was like a huge cultural shift happened overnight. You have to consider the time and context back then, especially in regards to mainstream Hollywood films. Popular films back then, characters didn't really talk like this in movies. It was much more formulaic "movie" talk. Not talking crap about these type of movies, as I love them too for what they are, but the big blockbusters were these Schwarzenegger/Stallone, Die Hard action movies and the characters all talked in very general, broad ways. Then Pulp Fiction comes along and 90% of the movie is just dialogue. And not just dialogue, but super intricate, specific "non-movie-ish" dialogue about Burger King and Royales with cheese, foot massages, watches up the ass, etc. People simply weren't used to characters TALKING like this on screen.

I know I'm late to the conversation, but adding onto what you mentioned too - the movie's varied timelines were also pretty groundbreaking for a film at the time as well. A majority of movies were very linear in storytelling, with scenes setting other scenes up. But Pulp Fiction treated the breaking up of events out of order as another plot device to further push potential narratives, such as the idea of "divine intervention". So many analyses and theories have been written about how events out of order really highlights instances where divine intervention WOULD have changed the outcome (Jules sticking with Vincent instead of having his epiphany, etc). It's really was a movie that was ahead of it's time.
In light of John Travolta’s iconic dancing in Saturday Night Fever and Grease, (and the fact that his career had been dormant for years leading up to this film), you have no idea what a huge deal it was that he danced in this movie.
Marcellus wasn't just "out for breakfast", he was literally on his way to Butch's apartment.

When someone calls you a character, it means you have a unique or memorable personality (i.e. "That guy's a real character").

A detail that gets missed is that Butch's girlfriend is very very likely pregnant. It's why she talks about having a potbelly, why she orders that insane breakfast and why Butch HAS to go back for the gold watch. He's going to have a child and wants to pass the heirloom watch on to them.
Her wanting a baby or being pregnant? See no reason why she needs to be pregnant. You're stretching.

I saw this the day it came out, seen it so many times since that I've grown a bit jaded about it. Which is why this reaction was so great! You made me see it with fresh eyes. There are so many "easter eggs" hidden all over this movie, and you guys were picking out stuff I had never seen before (or seen anyone else point out). You were catching on to recurring themes. all kinds of stuff, it was really inspiring to see. This movie isn't for everybody but it hits the sweet spot for others! One thing is for sure: if all he ever did was this movie, his position in film history would be secured because it totally changed the game in the 90s and was endlessly imitated. The best was another one with Travolta, "Get Shorty". And in a way, "Boogie Nights" (another one of the best films of the 90s), is part "Pulp Fiction", part "Goodfellas" and part "Dazed And Confused"......definitely three of the best (and most influential) films of the 90s!
P.S. DEFINITELY do his next one: "Jackie Brown"! I think both of you are going to like that one! Possibly Samuel Jackson's greatest ever performance, Robert De Niro, lots of other great actors....and a kick ass Pam Grier as Jackie Brown. Don't sleep on that one! I hope you're just going in order because that's the Tarantino movie I rewatch more than any other.

Something about Yolanda pointing a real gun at Vince and a finger gun at Jules is the funniest thing in the world to me. I can't even explain what's so funny about it, but I've seen this movie a couple hundred billion times and I still can't see that image without bursting out laughing. I also love when Jules tells Vincent to shut the f-ck up and she just kind of tacks on "...chuddup" like a little kid whose nose is full of snot from crying.
I think it's something about Amanda Plummer's acting. She's so freaking good in this movie. She's so massively overlooked and underrated it's criminal. It really is one of the greatest comedic performances ever. She embodies her character perfectly in every tiny mannerism and inflection and brings so much subtle detail to the scene. She has like four lines in an extremely talky scene and still manages to steal it. You can't stop looking at her. It boggles my mind that Tarantino didn't cast her more often.
"Because you are a character" is an expression, means you are interesting, unusual, or amusing ("he's such a character"). It's not about breaking the 4th wall about her being a character in the movie. It basically says "because you are a character (amusing, interesting type) doesn't mean you have character (honour, integrity, etc. as in "this builds character").

You really should add True Romance to your list. Tarantino wrote the script for it. It's a fun 1993 movie directed by Tony Scott. If you don't include True Romance, you're missing out on a key Tarantino story and a fun cast. Don't look up the cast though. You'll want to be surprised.
And Natural Born Killers ( 1994 ) which he wrote. He was a busy guy in the early 90’s.

that was Wallace's submachine gun in the boxer's apartment. Wallace left it there when he went for lunch and was bringing it back to Vincent. It's why Vincent didn't react to the noise in the apartment, he thought it was Marcellus Wallace. It wasn't just whimsical luck running into Wallace.

I'll never forget that, when I saw this in the theater, the people in front of me had their kids with them. They were SO bored. Then the gimp came out and they had SO many questions for their parents. It was very annoying, but in retrospect, pretty funny.

This film is considered a revolution in filmmaking for its unique language and its non-chronological editing; since its release in 1994, Tarantino became one of the most influential filmmaker around and everyone tried to mimic his style of writing and directing.
This movie actually made him a rockstar!
All of his movies have a lot of details and references to other films to catch up, in terms of shots and situations; he's famous for taking different genres and reinterpret them in his own way, to the point that I think it's fair to say he invented his own genre.
If you keep watching his movies, you will also get many references to its own previous and following ones (NO SPOILERS!!!).
He's considered a master of dialogues and character building.

Hey Gabbi and Caleb, someone broke down to me that the "Pulp Fitction" movie is a in which each person is the protagonist in their own story. So when each story is happening the story comes from their point of view. ------ When Jules is in the room speaking to Brad, it's from his point of view. ------ When Butch has to go back for the watch and saves Marcellus it's from his point of view. So although the character and storyline interconnection, it all depends on the lens though which it is viewed.
This was a good reaction and great discussion. This is a great film. It can be enjoyed on the surface, but if you're willing to explore the symbols and themes you get so much more.

holy heck! ive watched pulp fiction nine zillion times, ive seen it more times than any other film ive ever seen and thought about every scene from a million angles but ive never thought about how Vincent couldn't wash the blood from his hands for the reasons you two have described. that was deep. love that.
An extraordinary film. It makes masterful use of all the resources available in each frame, not one of them is unnecessary. Each word is perfectly well used and thought out, it doesn't need to tell us more or less. And a luxury cast, including Tarantino himself.
It doesn't *need to show us tits to validate itself or attract* us, it goes far beyond those narcissistic banalities. It's worth what it's worth for being the masterpiece that it is. And I love it for that.
I never get tired of watching it. I appreciate Tarantino's balls, it's one of those movies that will never be made again.

This movie hit the world like an asteroid. It was the coolest movie in the world for at least 2 years until SCREAM showed up in 1996. It introduced most of mainstream America to the idea of film as an art form.
*ANSWERS:*
PULP FICTION is a Postmodern film: it references media that preceded it. Most film in the 90s was Postmodern, and plumbed a massive multi-generational pop culture that people would've been familiar with in the days before the Digital Revolution fragmented everything. Most of this movie refers to other movies and TV shows; they were designed to be noticed by the audience.
"A Band Apart" is a reference to A BANDE APART (Band of Outsiders), a film by Jean-Luc Godard about amateur thieves. Godard was a legendary member of the French New Wave, one of the most significant film movements of the 20th century, and most film students/geeks were in awe of it. Non-linear storytelling was a key feature of many New Wave films, especially Godard's. Tarantino's first 2 films were very New Wave influenced (the "sporadic style" you mentioned), but he abandoned it for pastiche starting with KILL BILL.
The dance scene was a reference to A BANDE APART where the main characters just decide to dance in a club for no reason other than to amuse themselves ( th-cam.com/video/O4TYQkkAvk8/w-d-xo.html )
The glowing suitcase is a reference to the atomic suitcase in KISS ME DEADLY (also the car trunk in REPO MAN ( th-cam.com/video/Yx6Y0tuoIaI/w-d-xo.html )). The original contents were supposed to be diamonds, but because they used diamonds in RESERVOIR DOGS, they decided to just not show the contents and let it be mysterious. That's it. They didn't bother thinking about the interpretations for it and just left it for people to decide.
Jules says "My name's Pitt" so he could say "and your ass ain't talkin' your way outta this shit." ("Pitt" and "shit" rhyme) Just like "My name's Paul and this is between y'all": it's a statement phrased as a rhyme to be cool.
Vincent & Mia didn't win the trophy, they stole it. You hear the radio mention that the trophy was stolen later in the movie.
Heroin and cocaine are opposites of each other, so snorting heroin--especially that pure--would start shutting down your musculature, including cardiac muscle, unless you neutralize the binding action of the opiate receptors in your body. But for a number of reasons on top of that, Mia wouldn't have survived. Mia mistook the heroin for cocaine because it was in a baggie instead of a black balloon (Lance said he was out of balloons).
Heroin also makes you constipated, which is why Vincent's always in the bathroom trying to take a dump; when the heroin wears off, the plumbing wakes up.
The "divine intervention" occurred just after the briefcase was opened with the "666" code. So there's an interpretation that it may have been "infernal intervention" that spared Jules & Vincent, not divine.
It's not anarchy, it's irony. All of these stories are conventional plots of 20th century noir (the "Pulp Fiction" of the title) but before they can resolve, they get derailed and sent off into a completely weird tangent. That's what Tarantino was doing: reinventing traditional stories with unorthodox, absurd diversions. The 90s was drenched with irony--flippant, dismissive, benign trolling for the sake of being weird--so a lot of movies of the period reflect this anti-earnest sensibility. The juxtaposition of mundane talk and gratuitous violence is one of the signs.
While your observations are poignant, Tarantino didn't invest that in the film--he famously hates subtext, and is telling stories very straightforward, but with lots and lots of little digressions and clues that don't mean much.

21:24 High school dances in the 50s and 60s were usually held in the gym. To protect the expensive gym floors from scuffs from hard-soled shoes they usually required the participants to leave their shoes at the door. This lead to them being known as "Sock-hops". It makes sense that a 50s-themed restaurant might follow the same custom for a dance contest.
I love the way Tarantino gives the audience enough credit that they would be able to figure out the timeline by the end of the movie.

The woman with the piercings (Vincent's drug dealer's wife) and the guy hiding in the apartment who shot at Jules and Vincent and missed were brother and sister in real life, Rosanna and Robert Arquette of the Arquette acting siblings. Two more siblings, Patricia and David are also actors. Robert Arquette as he was credited in this film later transitioned to female and changed his name to Alexis, and Alexis died in 2016 at the age of only 47 as a result of complications from HIV.

This was fun to watch (for me, maybe the 10th time). During the Pawn Shop scene - you made the same observation I did: as much as anything, this movie is about how the power equation between people can change, change, and change again.

Vincent's cousin is a character in Reservoir Dogs. Butch is the one who scratched Vincent's car. They never won the dance contest, they stole the trophy. You can hear someone on the radio talking about it when Butch is walking in the alley on the way to get the watch. Some people think it is Mr. Wallace's soul in the briefcase. Vincent is always on the toilet b/c it's a symptom of his heroin addiction.
Quentin Tarantino is a postmodernist filmmaker. His style defies the norm of what a “movie“ is by have a use of nonlinear storytelling, dialogue, that is not integral to the plot (on immediate appearance), and layered metaphors/self-references.
I’ve seen a reaction to this movie where they asked what was in the case and they looked it up and said they quit in. Tarantino was the same thing and said “what is in the case is up to each individuals person interpretation. So it’s whatever each person who wants to be in the case.
There's also three great movies from Tarantino screenplays, that he didn't direct himself: True Romance, Natural Born Killers and From Dusk Till Dawn.

Hey Caleb and Gabbi, In an interview with AFI, Tarantino explained his inspiration for Pulp Fiction. ----- Basically, he was thinking about classic plotlines from old pulp fiction stories (e.g. the henchman who is tasked with taking the boss's wife out "but don't touch her!". ------ The boxer who is instructed to throw a fight but doesn't and then has to run from the mob, ----The hitmen showing up to kill some target or 'nother at the beginning of an action movie before the story cuts to the hero who will eventually run into the hitmen and fight them)
He wondered what would happen if all the stories happened in the same city, at the same time, over the course of one day, and some of the characters from the stories had connections to characters in the other stories. ----- Also, in the hitmen story, he wondered what would happen if, instead of cutting to and following the hero's story after the hitmen shoot and kill their target, we followed the hitmen through the rest of their day and saw what they were up to. ------ None of the plots are original (Tarantino called them "old chestnuts") but how he approached them and wove them together was original. And genius. Now the outcomes of these chestnuts are turned on their head, this is where Tarantino get really original.

My two favorite movie reactors get on the case. I am impressed with how many elements in the film the two of you break down. This movie is rich with symbolism and meaning, and very little gets past the two of you. Well done! I am excited to see what you get out of other Tarantino films.
This may have been mentioned already in the comments, but I've read that the glowing in the suitcase represents Marcellus Wallace's soul, which he sold to the devil, and the soul is removed from teh back of the head, which is why Marcellus always has a prominent band aid on his neck.
That band aid was just random thing because that actor cut his head. Completely random "accident". And in the movie in that case in realitywas a lightbulb. But it should symbolize anything each person wanted it to be.
Marvin worked for Wallace and was a plant into that group, that's why they didnt kill him at the apartment. Mia and Vince didnt win the trophy, they lost and then stole it. That was edited out and never made it on screen. Most reactors blame Vince for leaving the gun in the kitchen at Butch's. You did good not to do that because it was Wallace's gun he left to go get coffee. Wallace walking in front of Butch was taken from the movie Pyscho with Marion and her boss. It's almost like you two have never been to America not knowing two shakes of a lambs tail to means being quick or Mr Wolf calling his GF a character (as in you're a real character meaning unusual and interesting) has nothing to do with being a character in the movie. You guys read way too much into things. Like Jules eating bacon or the wife is named Bonnie. Jules calls the bank robber Ringo because before they edited it all out, Jules called each of the characters he met by a Beatles name (John, Paul, George, Ringo).
What’s great about this film is you have gangsters talking about real life everyday stuff, like do foot massages mean anything, and making pop culture references, and of course Jules moral awakening. Great stuff:)

Legend has it that Marcellus Wallace sold his soul to the Devil. When the Devil takes your soul, he rips it out from the back of your neck, hence the bandage on his neck at the beginning of the movie. When Vincent and Jules retrieve the case and everyone is wondering what's inside....that's Marcellus Wallace's soul. He sent his minions to get his soul back. And when that guy pops out from the bathroom shooting, God protects Vincent and Jules with divine intervention...

The contents of the suitcase were something precious enough to risk crossing an evil man like MW. Something valuable enough to kill for and risk dieing for, even with a gun in your face.
The thing I've realized from watching reactions like this is that there are a lot of people who view movies as a puzzle or a game they need to solve. Even when it's not a mystery, it feels like a lot of people are trying to crack the case. These two spend so much time trying to solve Pulp Fiction that they end up missing the point. Like most movies, everything is eventually explained in Pulp Fiction, so there's no point to try to solve the puzzle ahead of time. When you turn it into a game, you miss the dialog and context clues that reveal the whole story. Just watch the movie and enjoy.
True Romance is also another GREAT and ICONIC film in my opinion that Tarantino wrote, he didn't direct or produce though, but that has a bunch of 90s stars and was before any films he had more control over, Kristian Slater, Patricia Arquette Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, and also early somewhat minor acting roles for Samuel Jackson, James Gandolfini and Brad Pitt, and Val Kilmer has a voice-over only role.
You can almost feel the warmth of Gabriella, she seems like a great person.

Notice how something bad happens whenever Vincent visits the toilet.
1) Mia's overdose.
2) Jules getting robbed.
3) Vincent's demise.
Jules heard God's voice and quit the job, while Vincent failed to recognize the warning.
Also, ask yourself whether Butch had been successful if Jules had still been around. I keep thinking Vincent should have been more alert to it.
The woman with all the piercings is Rosanna Arquette. She was the inspiration for the songs ROSANNA by Toto and IN YOUR EYES by Peter Gabriel. Her brother starred in the SCREAM films and her sister was in True Romance and starred as the MEDIUM on NBC.
You can snort heroin. The reason she overdosed is because she does coke, not heroin. Plus, it was high quality heroin. She thought it was cocaine because it was in a baggie because Lance, the dealer, was out of balloons, which is what heroin is often sold in.
She also done a lot of it at once. That would kill most people with no tolerance and probably some with a tolerance.

Mia and Vincent stole the dance trophy, they did not win it! saying, "Two shakes of a lamb's tail." was a phrase used all over America in the 1940's and 1950's, and not just in the South. it was such a common phrase, that my uncle Phil used to say, "Two shakes of a dead lamb's tail." (but I haven't heard the phrase in 30 years) and we live 1000 miles west of New Jersey and three miles south of of Lake Superior (and farther north than 60% of Canada and we are still I the good ol' U S of A)! yes! Quinton Tarantino played a roll in the movie. when you see "Glorious Basterds" he will play two very minor parts. you have to watch VERY VERY closely, because they are very brief! Tarantino will be the first one 'scalped' and later in the movie, he will be in the 'strangulation scene'.

Ah, yes, the feeling of watching Pulp Fiction for the first time.
Heard "in two shakes of a lambs tale" in Texas growing up. Basically she will be down "shortly", before a lamb can shake it's tale twice if you have ever seen how rapidly a lamb shakes its tale.
It's funny seeing these 1st time watchers' expectations. They talk about what they think is going to happen that are typical movie tropes and Tarantino doesn't fulfill those often. It's one of the best things about his movies. I don't know what he's going to do with his scenes, how he's going to build it and where it will end up. It's a great thing to watch a movie and not know how the story and the characters will go. Not all his movies are great imo (Hateful 8) but they all strung me along wanting to know what's going to happen next.
