And to think that some the audience there, would have had no idea that Shawn Lane was also one of the greatest pianists to have ever lived! A one off ferocious talent!
Filming Shawn at this gig, would have been an instructional "encyclopedia" of technique and wizardry right there.! Love how he leans down to check his sound. Perfection.!!!!👌🤘🤘🤘🤘
I have seen the Willies numerous times at Salomon Alfred's on Beale Street. One time, some time in '88, Joe Walsh was at the bar with Jimmie Jameson and Joe Walsh got up and did a set with the band. I have been trying to find that video, but have failed
I was there. Joe Strummer of the Clash was there, too. Got his autograph. I think it was after Jimmy Jamison's set and I was standing beside Joe Strumner, didn't know it, and someone introduced him but it sounded like "Joe's drummer"...so fn Joe's drummer gets on stage! Strummer was standing right beside me and goes, "Joe's drummah?! I'm fn Joe Strummah! Who the fk is Joe's drummah?!!". Pissed. I shot out my hand and said, "man, that's bullsht "or something and, "can I get your autograph?" He signed a napkin "Joe Strummer The Clash" and and drew a big star. Damn cool. I got joe walshe's at the same place a week before-ish and Shawn was at thst show, too. Joe was drunk/blistered and couldn't get the solo to Holtel California right, so Shawn kinda nudges him over and does the lead. The band went on break, Shawn sat with us and I asked why he didn't go with and he said," "I don't do that stuff". Joe Walsh came back and killed the guitar...must've snowed during the break lol We watched the Willys almost every time they played btwn 85-88. Shawn, my friend john and I were all.into aquariums and that's what we usually talked about ...and guitars Pretty sure we were at this show, too
6:47 is absolutely ferocious. No tapping. Just double jointed, insane flexibility, incredible dexterity on those diminished (or augmented?) runs. The GOAT.
@tmh1717 The second song is "Heard it on the X" by ZZ Top,from the album Fandango(1975).The first time Billy Gibbons heard Shawn play he fell off a bar stool.
Not cream. I'd take shrloads of cream to affect in that way. Oral corticosteroids. Autoimmune disease. I was an RX and we'd talk about it. It's why he wore long sleeves. His elbows were just awful. He itched constantly. He was my friend.
Charles Scott Jr. ~ The bass player/vocalist name is Rob Caudill. He does Tribute to Rod Stewart now. He is amazing! He has been doing Rod Stewart for about 20 years now. He is on facebook and on youtube. If you google his name, Rob Caudill, you will find him. Cheers!
***** SO MANY LICKS TO STEAL FROM THESE WILLY'S GIGS! A lot of their original material was extremely clever and well written too (and featuring blazing guitar work). Do you have any HQ versions of The Willy's playing "One More Night"?
Not just Shawn. The whole band is good.
Exceptional singer too, btw.

Overstatement.
Shawn...never fails to floor me
Was a college student ….. never missed seeing the Willys. Loved them then… and still do. ❤️
Me, too. At UT in Rx
I will never forget seeing Shawn Lane live in Memphis. His playing was unbelievable. Thanks for putting up this video.
Glad you enjoyed it those days were the best the 80's

The One and Only....SHAWN..👏🏼
I saw Lane in Mexico City. At B.O.A. concert. in 1980. What happened to him. He grows. Big. Through the years. ???
The medication he took caused weight gain.
Overuse of cortizone cream, because he had psoriasis.
