I just have to say, thank you for making this channel! I really can’t get enough of this show. Pauline Kael May be considered the best film reviewer-writer of all time, but Ebert in particular made film criticism a true art.
Loved Boogie Nights..the critics back and forth was hilarious, so passionate about their views, but the film's direction, script, soundtrack were phenomenal, especially if you're familiar with that period..
This is my #1 pick of 1997...good thing I was working at a cinema back then, I saw it like 8 times...it just got better and even funnier after each sitting...now i got the 2 disc DVD special edition....👍🏿
He gave it thumbs up and so what, he's a critic, he's doing his job, I Loved Boogie Nights, but it does drag near the end and the Don Ceadle character was never fully explained at all and it's not for everyone, but I'm not going to complain if someone didn't
Siskel said that ‘Saturday Night Fever’ was his favorite movie ever, and it’s well documented that he bought the white polyester suit worn by John Travolta in the film. I think Siskel would have loved Boogie Nights if the timeline had stayed in the 70’s and not carried into the almost mid 80’s at its conclusion.
I think you can appreciate BOOGIE NIGHTS if you grew up in that era. VHS home video revolutionized the entertainment industry for the 1980's. That included pornography films which this movie covered beautifully. Porn became a billion dollar industry. This film is a Laugh Riot.
I don’t like Paul Thomas Anderson. I know everyone loves him. But he is polarizing and I always go the opposite direction. I’m agreeing with Siskel on this one.
I kind of like Hard Eight more than Boogie Nights (Boogie was great for a while, but it had some unnecessary scenes and some violence that didn’t really fit .).
It's true, as great as that donut shop robbery sequence is, it felt like Anderson had that idea and just jammed it into the film. I think there's a perfect film in "Boogie Nights" if it was trimmed by about 15 minutes. It's not the length that bothers me, it's that there are scenes that just feel a bit extraneous. I think "Hard Eight" is a much stronger, tighter film.
I used have the impression that Roger was the affable one and Gene was the sharp-tongued one. But the more of these I've watched, the more I've realized that Roger is a straight up bully and Gene is his victim. Every time Roger disagrees with Gene he takes on an irritated tone and instead of just presenting an alternate opinion, he insists that Gene's opinion is simply wrong and verbally beats him down, hardly letting Gene get a word in. Roger was a precursor to the worst of the internet, where people so often insist that their own feeling about something is an objective truth. Having said that, I'll acknowledge that I do like Roger and enjoy his writing and many of his insights. And I'll also note that, interestingly, when the two would guest on Letterman the roles were usually reversed, with Gene pummeling Roger with fat jokes and Roger sitting there and taking it. Hmm...
I don't know about that. Gene would get ridiculously pedantic about his positions and his role as critic, and he was also much more mean-spirited when it came to targeting casting, crew, etc. Roger would find a more reasonable way of articulating that, whereas Gene would sort of openly attack specific actors. I think they both are great in their own way, but it often really came down to who did the intro of the movie, what they felt that day, the topic of the film, etc. Roger was also just a more comfortable speaker, and Gene's mild dyslexia would often trip him up when sparring with Roger, so he would often just substitute being cold and dismissive to sort of cut back quickly. Fun to watch 'em both, though, and they each had some bad calls over the years.
@@Wigdogger Not sure if your points, well observed and stated, necessarily negate what I was saying, though I didn't know about the dyslexia. I do notice that Gene has a questionable tendency to pan a movie by presenting his own idea of what it should have been, while Roger is more accepting of what's there on the screen. But Roger will sometimes contradict himself from show to show, celebrating one movie as good dumb entertainment while ripping another for its dumbness just because it doesn't quite suit his taste. What's most interesting is that we're still so fascinated by these guys. Why do I keep returning to these clips when I have little to no interest in 90% of the movies they cover? Must be something about their personalities and chemistry.

But I take your points about the nature of how they talk about things and their personalities. Ultimately it’s still why I am so entertained and engaged with their content.
Boogie Nights has some good scenes most notably the whole segment when Dirk is a junkie and he tries becoming a rock star and then the Alfred Molina scene. But overall it’s uneven. The cornball scenario with the Don Cheadle robbery and the mom that hates her son which is convenient to push him into this life etc. although, Burt Reynolds was great with what he was given but I think he was correct in his disdain for it. Very overrated.
This is the GOOD version of Rocketman lol. It's a big hit in our house. We watch it at least once a year.

I thought the film forkin' blew. It didn't even really capture the 70s for me.
I am astounded they had nice things to say about Rocketman, which looked buffoonish to me even as a kid; I maybe have to give it a shot.
