It only comes fully assembled for ~20K USD. The motor is a Generac aircooled V-twin which B&S actually derived theirs from. It weighs 252lbs. so complies as a FAR103 ultralight. There's a BRS chute in the wing. I've got about 20 hours on mine so far and it's a blast. Yes it's very stable and the stall is a very mild 'mush'. I would compare the ride to being on a motorcycle rather than in a car like in a Cessna's cabin. The the folks in Rolla, MO are great to work with :)
5 gallons in a spun aluminum tank in the wing, range at 3600 rpm or roughly 55 mph is about 2 hours (100+miles) and you can land with about a gallon of fuel left.
A good used brand name ultralight start around $4,000 and go up. New they start at around $15,000. It generally takes about 10 hours of flight training to be able to solo an ultralight. The Ultralight Flyer
Does one need experience to fly one like this if you've never flown a plane before, or a little experience required? I already know about the left & right steering with your foot as a guy that lived down the road where I grew up 17 miles away from here had 2 ultralight planes back in the early 90's. He no longer flies I don't think, I think he sold them.
G'day, Yay Team..! ..... Um, Heads *UP* ! This is indeed apparently a US Federal Aviation Regulation Part 103 - Compliant Aeroplane (US FAR-103 is the still-extant AmeriKan Copy of the much earlier Australian August 1976 Air Navigation Order 95.10, which is technically still on the Books, kinda..., to "Grandfather" any Restorations.....). {To see the Aeroplane ANO 95.10 was written around, look in my "Personal Aeroplanology" Playlist, for "8 Hp, 1975, Red-Baron Skycraft Scout..." } The actual "Swingwing" was justifiably *World Famous* because in 1978, the VJ-23e Swingwing, with a 10 Hp McCulloch Chainsaw Engine, designed by Volmer Jensen of California, and piloted by Michael Cook, *the Actual SWINGWING was the 1st Minimum/Microlight/Ultralight-Airctaft to FLY THE ENGLISH CHANNEL.....!* To see an ACTUAL Swingwing discussed in a YT-Video, again, backtrack me to my "Personal Aeroplanology" Playlist, and view "22 Hp VJ-24w SunFun...." ; because in explaining the history of Volmer Jensen's 24th Design, I more-or-less had to cover the VJ-23 & VJ-23e, as well as the VJ-22 & the VJ-24, & the VJ-24e..., in fact I even showed the VJ-11, from 1948, a Biplane Foot-Launched Hang-Glider... Calling some other subsequent Ultralight a "Swingwing" in vain is about as "Not Done...!" as calling one's Cessna 150 Lookalike a "Sopwith Camel"....; it makes the claimant stand-out as being an ignorant arrogant hubristic Tryhard Wannabe, though they're obviously well-meaning and ambitious..., the ignorant hubris counts greatly against their chances of long-term success. I recognise that you're attempting to "Promote The Sport" , but please try not to actively facilitate the traducing of History by ignorant Marketing Psychologists who're trying to "sound Cool, dude !" My observation, for what it's worth, is that unquestioning belief in Marketing Psychology has killed more Humans than any other identifable factor pertaining to Aviation, since Pontious was a Pilate. (But, then again, the Hairygoplane which took me for my 1st Solo was the 1st Legal Minimum Aircraft, and last time I saw it, they had it chained to the Ceiling of the Inverell Transport Museum...; and I was the last person who flew it, therefore - apparently - one is permitted to pontificate, wildly,..(?). Happy (Summer, here...) Solstice Festival...! ;-p Ciao ! ;-p Ciao
I like this video with this small plane. We are searching for such an airplane to made it of ourselfs in our club here in Europe. Were can I buy plans for it? Greetings, Peter
how do you practice flying a one man aircraft? do u just spend a few weeks controlling it on the ground and then fly it when u know all the controls well?
Just a valid driver's license - flying, that's another story. Actually it depends on the country. In the US, if the aircraft meets the FAR Part 103 regulations for weight, speed etc. It can be flown without a medical certificate or pilot's license. See internet for details.
Yeah that concerns me too. It seems easy enough to fabricate folding struts and give yourself peace of mind. They come with a BRS recovery system too. Anything to keep it from planting you.

Awesome! It looks pretty similiar to the Piper Cub in some way.
Gives an all new perspective on the word “minimalistic”. I think I saw a zip tie that could have been deleted.
I'd say no panels on fuselage would be beneficial in the crosswind. With that being said, I need one!👍
Ed Spencer
Was thinking the same thing!
I love this little Plane! Only what you need to fly and not a lot of crap you don't!
5 gallons in a spun aluminum tank in the wing, range at 3600 rpm or roughly 55 mph is about 2 hours (100+miles) and you can land with about a gallon of fuel left.
What's the max pilot weight?
I love ultra lights. I wish I knew how to fly a real plane. I do a lot of RC planes but nothing like the "real deal". Take care.
Gene and Larry Smith designed and built this UL. Sadly Gene passed away in 2016 and the UL is no longer being manufactured.
THEY COULD HAVE SELL THE PLANS BUT PEOPLE ARE SELFISH
Beautiful aircraft!
its great.
what metal pipes u sue for frame? & what is for the wings.& how to deside the roughter tipe & size.?
I'm going to ask the same question how much does one cost and what would it take to learn to fly one

The Ultralight Flyer
just how heavy is it ? Looks solid for sure .

The engine used on the Backyard Flyer is a converted Generac generator engine. 45 HP
4 stroke or 2 stroke?
Would a 30.6 HP engine be to weak?
G'day,
Yay Team..!

where can one find the plan to build this aircraft?
very nice!!!
nice landing!
damn great pilot I say.
if only our ancient ancestors wanted to fly as badly as us maybe we would have evolved wings!! Sweet haha
I like this video with this small plane. We are searching for such an airplane to made it of ourselfs in our club here in Europe. Were can I buy plans for it? Greetings, Peter
wow.. very cool!
Love the design of this but the nose wheel version has better ground handling.
@jimiorezzoli what's the range on that? Would it be possible to go cross country? Looks like you could strap a saddlebag behind the seat and wheeeee!
@DrifterThai awesome.
How much does it cost? Where can I buy one?
Now that's it May 19 2024
Can I buy one?
Are plans for sale?
He must be descended from that guy who made an autogyro with a rotating wing in the 1930s!
Runs on regular gas, fits in a car lane, take off anywhere.
buen trabajo.
is verry nice!!!
how do you practice flying a one man aircraft? do u just spend a few weeks controlling it on the ground and then fly it when u know all the controls well?
That sounds reasonable.
what engine you use?
are ther admission fee on how to fly
You guys have great ass twerking music for your intro. Well most of the time anyway.
Where is the fuel?
Damn........he turned the wing around and turned the plane into patio furniture.
It's a Briggs & Stratton mower motor (about 22 hp). You can't use a car engine for an ultralight. Use a mower engine. lol
I have a B&S twin opposed in my ultralite.(somewhat modified)
@Mr2Waren2
I think on the top of the wing.
@Mr2Waren2
in wings ?
which engine is it? can a old car engine be used????
An old car engine can be used, but not for ultralight aircraft - think boat anchor.
bu uçak kaç para alınır yada yapılır ben türkiyeden katılıyorum
puedo conseguir planos de construccion gracias

wow, what kind of permission you must have to drive UL aircraft?

No wing struts make me nervous.

It's a Generic engine that Briggs && Stratton copied.
