  • In this video I will show you how to replace upper and lower control arms in your Jeeps front axle. This process is very similar to other vehicle models but today I will show you how to do it on a Jeep Cherokee XJ with a Dana 30 Axle. This process may be similar on other Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, and Comanche. I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. If you have any other questions that the video doesn't cover make sure to comment below and I would be happy to answer.

    If you’re doing both upper and lower, do 1 at a time or the axle will shift significantly

    • @prestoc3034
      @prestoc3034 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @HexagramManNot that it really matters since this was a video about control arm bushing replacement procedures.., but a good 2 cents might help someone out there. I always just go around with a partial tightening first, until back to the lug I start with, making sure the hub is on all the way, then I tighten them all good and tight with my breaker bar.. No problems what so ever for the last 10 years, and I use my spare a lot living out in the desert. So really it comes to mechanical know how, first and foremost, and of course the threads need to be checked each time wheel lugs are removed (Are both the stud and lug threads clean and still fully intact?)..

      @@OutJeeping I fixed my death wobble by 100 percent it was an oblonged hole where the center arm hooks to the passenger side upper chassis from the front end unit, the factory mounting hole is bigger then the fastener bolt, factory flaw, so you need to re drill center bushing of the center arm to I belive 7/16 and install new hardened bolt, never wobbled since

    I have a quick question about lower control arms. I got a pair of lower and upper control arms and I noticed that the new ones (not stock) are about 3" longer.(lower ones) and not sure about the top ones. If I replace those with the longer ones (which are far beefier) will it raise the front end alot?
    The XJ 1999 Jeep Cherokee is currently stock with the exception of rear leaf spring links. I put some longer links in place, which is currently set to the least aggressive setting.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Control arms will not change lift, they only affect where the axle will be located. With longer links they are meant to go with lift springs to return the axle to the center of the wheel well and give appropriate pinion axle.

    • @nathanpizzo9444
      @nathanpizzo9444 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have some really serious vibration after replacing old leaf springs with stock new ones. I believe the angle must be off. The ride height is now 2” - 3” higher. The vibration is less when the Jeep has 4 people in it- almost normal- but when I drive it solo the vibration is scary. So I am going to put stock shackles in- and will measure the angles. It appears as if the pinion is pointing down too far. - I will have some shims tomorrow. I removed the front drive shaft and the vibration is just the same or worse.

    Removing the upper control arm rear bolts are impossible. On the passenger side there isn't room for a socket and breaker bar. On the driver's side there is more room, but fuel or brake lines get in the way. Looks like the only option is to sawzall the bolts off and buy new bolts. New bolts are expensive from the dealer.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to heat the nut on the passenger side and get it off with the ratchet wrench. I wasn't necessarily able to do the driver side that way because of the gas line.

    Amazon says "this does not fit your 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ". WTF? AND, when asked if this solved your "death wobble" (the point of the entire process), you have stated at least three different answers in your replies (70% better, 75% better, 90% better). This seems very unscientific, especially without showing us a test drive before and after. I personally don't trust a teenager giving automotive advice, not 70%, 75% or 90%. Thanks, but I'll find other videos with authentic proof that their labor actually works 100%.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ha! Do what you gotta do guy. It did reduce the occurrence of death wobble on my Jeep but every Jeep is different on how parts wear. The upper control arm bushings ended up being the final culprit to contributing to death wobble. No it wasn't a scientific test for the reduction in death wobble. The purpose of the video was to show how to replace the lower control arms not how to cure your death wobble. Once again every death wobble case is different with how components wear on every Jeep. Apparently you don't trust yourself either which is why you are here in the first place.
