Been a thumber for 4 years. I have tried to pinch off and on many times. If makes holding the controller so much more uncomfortable and it just throws me off. Thumbs for life!
I hybrid pinch for FPV. But for Camera/GPS I don't feel the need for incremental stick movements , thumbs are used. I started out in fixed wing and it was left hand pinch for throttle/yaw, right thumb for pitch and roll.
I thumb at first for maybe 2 months, then tried hybrid pinch to see what people are praising it about. I was struggling big time at first and I thought maybe I am a thumber after all. Then slowly I unintentionally hybrid pinch when I'm in the zone. Now I pinch all the time. Try both and force yourself to see what your body naturally does!
You get more control the further up on the joystick you go. More distance to cover the same amount of movement on the joy stick. A movement of a half inch towards the top moves the control far less than a half inch towards the middle or as low as you can get.
I'm a pincher, I honestly don't know how thumbers can do it. Whenever I tried it I just lacked the fine control. Feels incredibly clumsy to me. Not saying there's anything wrong with it, it just doesn't work for me.
Adding my two cents as a racer. I fly on Mode 2 and use thumb for throttle/yaw and hybrid for roll/pitch. There is a tradeoff on thumbing for throttle, you will get faster throttle response and less yaw resolution, conversely hybrid gave me slower throttle response and more yaw resolution. However as I improved I realized I didn't need to pump the throttle as much as I thought I did. As a result I switched to hybrid which helped smooth out my flying greatly. In conclusion, I think choosing a grip depends highly on what kind of muscle memory you already have programmed into your hand. If you don't have any, hybrid can be quite helpful. Hope this helps someone!
when i started i used my thumbs, but after some time, i switched to pinching. it took some time to adjust, but i feel like i got more precision in the stick movement. but tbh i dont think it makes a lot of difference, its all just personal preference. it also depends on the radio, as someone said, pinching with the pocket might cause some wrist pain. my biggest issue is sometimes i forget my neckstrap to hold the controller, and when pinching a boxer, it doesn't feel secure in my hands, and im a bit scared i might drop it.
Maybe it’s a question of horses for courses. As an old fixed winger I prefer pinching for minute adjustments in a precision landing, but it may not be ideal for the large and impressively quick inputs needed for freestyle or racing quads? I wouldn’t know, those flying styles are beyond my capability anyway, but I have my suspicions.
I've found I subconsciously hybrid pinch when trying to fly more controlled, with very intentional inputs. When I'm ripping about, racing or generally flying faster, I use thumbs. I feel that the pinch grip makes me slower, having to move both finger and thumb with also half the hand to get a full stick deflection, whereas just the thumb finds that motion very smooth and fast.
Ha! I just talked about this, i am a thumber when i fly quads, started flying wings and pinching feels better for flying wings and drones in angle mode
Pinch with all my drones except for whoops - my whoops radios come with short mushroom top sticks that fit well under my thumbs with plenty of contact/grip.
After watching this video, I forced myself to pinch for a day. 24 hours later pinch feels more natural, more precise and my flying reached a new level of precision.
I am still a fpv noob and come from a gamer background. When I started I was thumbing but I tried switching to pinching and I found I have much more control. Getting over the thumbing wasn't that hard and I still use thumbs for regular rc (mini) quads where the controllers are really small.
I'm pincher. At the first 2 months i was thumber. What i think after 2 years in FPV and what i see from other pilots i know they are pincher or thumber : Both have advantages and disadvantages. Pinch is more precise and cleaner. The disadvantage of pinch is that quick changes of direction at full speed are slower and more difficult. Thumb can be faster but comes often with unclean jerking (vibrating movements).
i think that's what you're saying is kinda true, but at the same time if thumber was actually faster racing pilot's would use that, but the majority of them that i know are pinchers, even at high levels
@@SkyMaxfpv I second this, but from the perspective of 3d plane flying. they do lots of fast elevator input changes for example, and there is almost no one flying thumbs.
I'm new in FPV, but thumbing my Pocket radio seems more natural to me, even though I have very little experience with game controller (PC gamer). Also, I think thumbing is better for getting full range of motion on the sticks fast, which is good for freestyle. And you still can have great precision if you adjust your rates ([actual] lower center rate and higher expo). But I guess pinching could be an advantage for racing together with more linear rates.
Hey Stew, Yeah, I love video games, but for me, it depends on the radio, the old box radio's I pinch, for game style radio's I would thumb, for medium size I would hybrid. Thanks for the video and MARRY Christmas.
It depends if you have a strap or not. I use a strap which holds the weight of the tx and I use my thumbs to control the sticks. I find pinching limits my range and the thumb is what separates us from other animals on Earth. Use the damn thing man. If you do not use a strap and you pinch then 6 digits are holding the tx while four are controlling. Your brain is having to do more than it needs to. When I use a strap and thumbs my other 8 digits are barely holding the tx ready to flip a switch anywhere anytime and my focus is on the connection of the knurled tips into my skin so that there is no slip. Once the metal is dug into my thumb tip it's like a born limb. No pinching. No holding. Just controlling with the slightest touch.
That seems backwards unless you're pinching near the very top of the joystick. It's less the difference between pinching and thumbing and more about where you're applying the force. The further up you go, the more movement of your fingers are required to achieve a similar amount of movement in the control.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade I'm using a TX16S MKII Max, so yeah, I pinch at the top, for more precision. It's less wiggly/sloppy of control, pinching at the top, than using my thumbs. what, you don't think I'm grabbing them mid stick do you? my fat fingers would decrease range of motion. and why am I explaining all this to you? 🤣
I spent 50+ hours on a sim before working out I was a pincher - I thought the thumbs were the aim of the game, wrong. Thanks for confirming that I am not a complete loser newbie with no thumb skills. I am old.
ive played a LOT of video games growing up but mainly on PC... Hybrid feels most natural to me. I really tried to learn thumbing because i feel like its beneficial for freestyle but i just cannot do it it feels so wrong..
This is something I've been thinking about lately I'm just starting out in drones coming from a video game world I was wondering if it would be worth my time to acquire the muscle memory for the pinching technique thanks.
I played games, and i am a pincher as this is what i have gotten used to watching people fly when i started with my big radio, Imitatie people that are better than you For a while i did not feel like it was possible to be as precise with thumbs as you can be with pinchers Few years later loads of people got into the hoby started thumbing and showed to be verry precise Its what ever you are used to But the reason thumbing is superior is it leaves your body open to more movement l, you yourself will be able to walk put your legs up or what ever thumbing But pinchers are cramped
First I thought I should pinch, since Steele kind of yeah (let him call it what he want). Then I saw that Heads (InfinityLoops) thumbs, and then I understand that this doubt is so irrelevant as rates. Blood, sweat and tears... the rest doesn't matter.
I use my thumb pad (fingerprint pad) to push the controller’s base plate part of the joysticks. That way, when I’m manually flying circular property shots, for example, I can lock off movement and make micro adjustments much easier. And no hand fatigue.
Hey! Great video as always. I am from Brazil and I speak english, your videos have the auto translating setting turned on, so this means that both title and description are automatically translated. The thing is the translation is extremely poor and most of the meaning of the original title is lost. I would advise turn it off, as keeping like this, at least for portuguese, makes me not understading what the title(translated) means, nor the content of the video
Been a thumber for 4 years. I have tried to pinch off and on many times. If makes holding the controller so much more uncomfortable and it just throws me off. Thumbs for life!
I’ve seen dudes ripping with one hand. Just do what’s most comfortable. Or best for you. The biggest smile is the right answer!
yeah that dude is a bad ass
I started by forcing myself to pinch and it just feels more natural now. More control as you said haha

Tx16s is not comfortable for pinching, but the boxer and rm pocket are perfect. I don't use a lanyard either, just holding the remote and pinching.
Thumb club
I'm a hybrid guy myself. Pure pinching/thumbing by themselves never felt quite right.
But as a gamer, im waiting for a keyboard and mouse transmitter😂

Thumbed my small transmitters until I bought a TBS Mambo.
Then I could comfortably hybrid pinch - it immediately felt like home.
thumb goes faster in reaktion but dificult to switch if u start with pinch
I've always thought that thumb pads like on gaming controllers would be ideal.

As a thumber I am in denial that you have more control pinching. It’s so awkward to me. But I rarely see a top pilot who is a thumber 😭

most pro pilots use pinch
Hybrid all the way, smooth and fast movements combined. Pinching is precise, thumbing is fast, mixing is the best of both worlds.
you've found the holy grail
@UAVfutures took me a while to even notice I was doing it 🤣
Hybrid pinch. If i try to fly thumbs I have so little control.

Lifelong gamer. Been using controllers my whole life. Started off thumbing as it felt natural. Slowly evolved to hybrid.
I always wondered if Im alone on this:
I pinch the right stick. And thumb the left.😮
Ummm yeah that's very strange...never seen that before
Are you serious?
Best of two worlds.
More control, and a good grip on the radio.
Pinch 🧩☢️

Pinching or thumbing? Take your hands of the controlls all the time - best solution 🤣
It'll keep on flying anyways, after all its a drone right?

Hybrid. Thumb still on tip, but index finger still on the top.
hybrid is the way!
Thumbing is better for range of motion on the gimble imo. If you need more precision, expo is your friend
PINCHER
Pinchers are boomers or people bullied into it by boomers, change my mind

I’m gen X and pinch, or kinda hybrid pinch, more control..
