The Swanage Branch from Norden (near Corfe Castle) to Swanage is a "preserved" heritage railway running steam and diesel locomotives recreating the scenes seen. Sadly the beloved Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway often shortened to "The Dorset" has sadly long gone as it was closed in March 1966 (Blandford, Broadstone Glastonbury etc') . It was a line which should not have closed, sadly it was neutered by the western region of British Railways and there was never any attempt to modernise it, or give it a chance to exist into more enlightened era . Fortunately the main line between Poole and Weymouth (Holme, Wareham & Upwey) remains, now electrified. The Dorchester West to Yeovil line remains, although a shadow of what it once was. Yes some rail routes in the UK were basket cases from day one ... But not all, the UK rail system today, sadly, is a poor indictment of the country which invented railways, and then promptly threw most of it (them) away
