    I have been going crazy for over a week trying to diagnose my mower. After watching your video, I went out and found that the same hose had dry rotted. Fixed! Thanks for sharing your information.

      That's awesome Francis, glad I could help! Just this morning I posted part 1 of the refurbishing video I made on this unit.

    Don, I’m not clear on what that plastic piece was that you showed was blocked after 7:45.
    Also, in my diagnostic process for a suspected no fuel issue I would have gone for the quickest, easiest check first and disconnected the fuel line downstream of the filter to confirm everything upstream of the carb was working. If still no fuel I would continue upstream. The last thing I’d check is the carb because that takes the most work to get at in this case.

    You know what alot of people don't do first , and that is , in the tank , on the bottom where the nipple drains the fuel , it gets plugged from dirty gas cans to where just a little amount of fuel drips down, I got a piece of wire and low and behold it started and ran great!

      @randomwrenching  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have also seen that problem. It's not super common, but an excellent thing to keep in mind. Thanks!

    Haven’t watched the whole video yet, but here’s a tip for you folks that might have similar issues with fuel. Check your oil level first. If it’s overfull, smell the dipstick for gas. It’s a possibility that the diaphragm in your vacuum fuel pump is ruptured and pumping fuel into your engine. Second, take the fuel line going to the carb off the fuel pump and replace it with a foot long piece of 1/4” fuel line and route the other end away from the muffler. Try to crank it while watching the end of the line to see if gas is being pumped out in a sufficient amount. If it’s not, you need a new fuel pump and an oil change.

    I didn't know that running a low battery could ruin the stator or alternator whichever you would call it. Good to know, not that I have a machine that has one but maybe some day. Thanks for another great video.

    • @randomwrenching
      @randomwrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen it a few times on riders. It's not super common, but the cost of a stator repair isn't work taking the chance of burning it out.

    I had a similar problem with my Briggs opposed twin. it would start and idle fine but would start crapping out when the throttle was opened. it took a while but I finally traced it down to the pulse hose, which was filled with a whitish goo. After cleaning it out, the machine runs like new again!

    • @randomwrenching

    • @mumbles552
      @mumbles552 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@calebmcmillan7566 The pulse hose runs from the crankcase to the fuel pump. It transfers the air pulses in the motor to the pump to make the pump work. It's the same idea as fuel pumps used on outboard motors.

    Would you know if the 24hp V twin has a cam compression release? Mines locking up when starting. I set the valves. New battery. If I hand turn the engine to just over a compression stroke, it turns over fine.

    • @randomwrenching

  • @len4338

    So when the pump fills the bowl, what happens to the excess fuel ? Does it build up pressure in the line and restrict the pump ? How does that work with machines like that ? On 2 strokes there is normally a fuel return is why I'm asking.

    • @randomwrenching
      @randomwrenching  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The low pressure created by the pump can't flood the carb as long as the needle/seat are doing their job. The pump just makes a little pressure but fuel doesn't move.

    I have a 2011 Briggs intek v twin 26hp, with only 42 total hours. I had surging issue for past 2 years. but always started and ran and never stalled. Decided to replace carb to stop the surging since I moved to house with 1 and 1/2 acres opposed to old house with little less than 1/2 acre. Once I replaced carb, I used fluid to start it, so gas would fill carb, took 2 times and ran okay, had a slight surge, but nothing like before. Then tried to start even when warm without starting fluid and just turns over, but does not start. Thought I was out of gas, so added gallon, same issue. Fuel filter has gas in it. I am now trying to figure out what is issue. It is a aftermarket carb, so maybe the fuel solenoid is bad from the start. I have never dealt with lawnmower engines. Fuel pump should be good, I also tried different spark pugs, replaced fuel filter. I did notice the fuel filter is about 1/2 full of gas, not sure if that is normal, my old fuel filter was white, so was not as easy to see fuel. There are a few dry rot cracks in the ohv vac line, but ran before all this and I never removed it, I ordered another to see, awaiting it to arrive. Mower is a Craftsman YT4500.

    • @randomwrenching
      @randomwrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Surging is almost always a lean condition. I have had no luck with the cheap amazon carbs, but quality aftermarket ones seem to be fine. Id do a fuel feed test by taking off the hose at the carb and cranking it over to see if it is pumps enough fuel into a container. A weak fuel pump may not work well enough to feed the carb at cranking speed, but may flow just enough when you use starting fluid to get it running. Air bubble in a fuel filter is normal. Also, make sure the choke linkage is set properly so it closes the choke butterfly completely in the choke on position. Those two things are where I would start. Fuel flow at cranking speed, and choke plate fully closed.

    I had the same problem yesterday.It was the throttle cable and choke position and it still wouldn’t crank. I went. around to the front of the mover to the carburetor and pushed the chocked all the way up and it started and it ran until I turn the key off . I tried cranking it again with out pushing the chock my self and again it wouldn’t start again. I pushed the chock all the way up again and it started again..
    I plans to try to proposition the cable and that done work then off to the parts store or Amazon. Hope this help.

    • @randomwrenching
      @randomwrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does it fire then die when using starting fluid? If so, it's not getting the fuel from the bowl up into the engine. I'd start with checking the fuel shutoff solenoid under the carb bowl to make sure it's working properly.
