These are the cars that excited us baby boomers (I know, I drove a 68 Charger, my high school friends had a Firebird 400, a Barracuda, a Challenger 440, GTX 440, a Road Runner, Duster, and too many 67-69 Mustangs Camaros Chevelles and Novas to list. But I'm 69 today, and like most baby boomers, I would be a fool to spend $200k on a car I could not drive that was losing value because its target demographic was aging out. This guy sold this collection at exactly the last moment at which he could recoup most of his expenses, and perhaps make a modest profit, depending on how cheap the cost of the restoration, storage, and upkeep. I'm pretty sure if he put that same money into other investments he could have made a lot more money, and just flown around the country admiring a wider selection of muscle cars than these. That parade of 71 Mopars actually turned me off - I only ever liked 68, 69, and a few 70 models. By 71 they were over-designed and too full of shiny bling. I didn't see a single 71 Mopar cross the stage except that purple one (I liked the color) that I would have paid ten grand for, and they were all selling for $185 - $200k or more. I hope these buyers can pawn them off on some Dubai sheiks pretty quick; they'll never miss a million here and there. Enough already, it's all water under the bridge now.
James Garner is said to have been one of the top 5 stunt drivers. They tried to find someone who could do the stunts during the Rockford files shows but none could do what Garner did. He picked the Pontiac for it's handling.
In 1977 and ‘78, you could get a base L78 Pontiac 400 or a High Output W72 Pontiac 400 with the TH350 automatic transmission or the Borg Warner Super T-10 manual transmission. David Spade was actually at Wellborn's a few weeks ago during Wellborn's Daytona 50 year celebration in Alex City,Al. I was there,200 winged cars! Incredible show!
He paid in scrap aluminum - about 2.8 million pounds of pull tabs he and his buddies had saved up since junior high. Joe only gets to drive it every third Saturday in odd-numbered months. He doesn't think that's fair, but what can he do? He's joe dirt, unluckiest man alive.
The Charger Daytona is a rare bird indeed. Forget the numbers they claimed were produced but it was a flat out lie. They're not more than 500 of those cars according to a relative who worked in the assembly plant building them. Said the Nascar rep was there counting the cars rolling of the line(as they had to produce 500 1st before France would allow it to run on the track) and as they drove them by they just went around the plant and got back in line to be counted again.

I could kick myself for selling my '69 Mach 1. The plan was to get another one after I was stationed at an Air Force Base after basic and tech school and buy another one with a stick. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find one before I got married and had a baby, and then I didn't have the money. I have a 2006 5 speed GT now that I really like now, though. It needs a new paint job, so I'm going to have it repainted like my '69. I got a 1969 hood scoop and can't wait to get it done.
Burt Reynolds was given a new Trans Am every year as a promotion for GM, one year the car didn't arrive so he phoned GM, they told him their would be no more free cars as the chairman had died and since it was the chairman's idea to offer the free car the offer died with him.
Yeah I recall many worked on assembly line Oldsmobile 442 tornado etc solid frames big motors gas cheap a good thing because many were gas guzzlers excellent variety 😊
about the 78 Pontiac, even though it most likely it was not used in the movies, but now that he has passed away I'm sure the value of it has gone up quite a bit...
When these cars were new I thought they were big ol tuna boats and were only good for planning families in the back seat! In those days Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds ruled the roads. But now I’m old and go for big cars like these for a more comfortable ride 😂 I will say these auctioned cars are in beautiful shape!
I watched this live, I'll bet alot of these cars came from Wheels & Spokes in Hays KS. I stopped by there in 1990 on my way home from Oregon. Think the guys name was Jerry?
I remember see used muscle cars on lots in the late 70s early 80s and they were everywhere for next to nothing man if people only knew how much they were going to bring one day
IMO> It sickens me to hear the auctioneers begging to have the reserve removed! With the money they made from buyer and seller already, it seems un-professional when they start begging for someone to take less then what they are asking for!
a 1968 dodge charger R/T black on black puts all those overpriced crates to shame. Complete with shotgun and black and yellow new york tags. A car is meant to drive; not to look at as a trophy queen buried in some storage facility. What a waste.
My brother had a Dodge RT 440 1969. He was proud. So we're we. I owned a right hand steering MGB. I drove it on the Autobahn when I was stationed in Germany. WFL-Atlas
I was driving home from work, a Firestone dealer had a thrashed superbird on the lot, the rear wing was cut off. Only stubs were left, this car was ran very hard

i used to think that as well...but we all know theres nothing like the smell and feel of a brand new car,,now imagine being in 1970 and buying a brand new muscle car..you wouldnt want to get a speck of dust on it
There are knuckleheads aplenty putting Mickey Thompson wheels and racing them. This is about unrestored cars with original paint, original wheels and and plenty of power.
The announcers need to do a better job of fact checking before they speak. There were no 429 SCJ engines offered in the 69/70 Mustangs, that engine variant was available starting in 1971.
my first car was a 1969 roadrunner. it was 8 years old. hard to keep running. rebuilt motor in tobacco barn. went by moms at 124 mph in 3rd gear. had 4 spd. we lined them up at school daily and 2 was picked to go race instead of class. cost was 325.00 she sold it when i went to japan for military. sold for one hundred dollars. year 1980 it was 11 years old then. time is a thief my friends. i am still mashing on it. drag raced son at track on motorcycles. best day ever. 3rd race i almost did him in. almost. time is a thief.

What was the original window sticker price?
Just wondering, if a reserve isn't met? Do the people that own the car get it back or what happens?
No, the auction company keeps it.
Their portfolios must have been taking a beating so the accountants made them sell the cars
the 900 thousand dollar daytona was bought by david spade from joe dirt
Yea.
I remember that Pontiac kid rock drove in that movie

Oh hell the rockford files was a massive hit when I was a kid loved that show..........
Is that the same trans am that were featured in Danny koker's show Counts kustoms?
Mecum is the King of Collector Auctions !!
Interestingly, I ordered a 1977 Trans AM SPECIAL EDITION, in October of 1976, receiving in March of 1977: velour Interior, 6.6 L, auto, tinted Window Delete, rear Window De Fog, a/c, Hurst T Tops, ( which leaked continuously: one stolen , I see why GM SWITCHED TO GM TTOPS), Ziebart Rust Proofing ( not help much)....We used hard Family miles for some 13 years... Now sitting in Salvage yard WARSAW Indiana ( Gills)..... May have saved it knowing present Markets, the Movie , Burt Reynolds and Promotions ....think it was some eight 1977s used in movie ( Vinyl Interior, seems ,Ike some were TA6.6 Engines::SMOKey & Bandit Experts please help me her ?!,,,) as I did bump into a worker for car Company/Supplier to Movie : believable enough in the : at least seven cars used up in Movie use, etc,,( a lone time ago Approximately 1987?)......
Man If I was a millionaire I would have a collection like this because these cars are great investments
"great investion" hahahaha, only waste money 5000$ car and pay many hundre thousand, true idiot have. auction have lot us peoples what have us normal, money have but brain no have, totally idiot pay car what can buy 4000$ more.
I tried and tried to talk my dad into buying a blue one used for 3000 Canadian around 1974 . I told him it would be a good investment.
Yeah I recall many worked on assembly line Oldsmobile 442 tornado etc solid frames big motors gas cheap a good thing because many were gas guzzlers excellent variety 😊
Cars are extremely beautiful
about the 78 Pontiac, even though it most likely it was not used in the movies, but now that he has passed away I'm sure the value of it has gone up quite a bit...
The one announcer has no clue about cars! He should go on to little league baseball.
Only a MOPAR, a Shelby Or a Race corvette gets that much $900k for a muscle car.
I'd love to have the money to get involved with this auction ...only in America ! just the best cars!!
I remember see used muscle cars on lots in the late 70s early 80s and they were everywhere for next to nothing man if people only knew how much they were going to bring one day
Not just cars but some of the most beautiful inventions ever created by mankind ....and the most lucrative investment you could possibly make.
IMO> It sickens me to hear the auctioneers begging to have the reserve removed! With the money they made from buyer and seller already, it seems un-professional when they start begging for someone to take less then what they are asking for!
True but most people want to much for their cars.
Should have bought this and put it in my 401k
Some of these cars I'm better than a 401k if you know what you're doing my friend
a 1968 dodge charger R/T black on black puts all those overpriced crates to shame. Complete with shotgun and black and yellow new york tags. A car is meant to drive; not to look at as a trophy queen buried in some storage facility. What a waste.
400hp from that 8L viper, that's a terrible 50hp to the liter!!
The first car sold for more than a lot of what people make in twenty years.
@James LOL, you don't know who you are talking too. I have done more in my life than ten of you ever would do.
Oh my goodness freaking awesome 🤩😁🤩😇🤠
My brother had a Dodge RT 440 1969. He was proud. So we're we. I owned a right hand steering MGB. I drove it on the Autobahn when I was stationed in Germany.
WFL-Atlas
very nice car and video love old cars
I was driving home from work, a Firestone dealer had a thrashed superbird on the lot, the rear wing was cut off. Only stubs were left, this car was ran very hard
$900,000, my mother sold mine, in fair condition for $400.00 in a yard sale, while my left leg was in a cast
Randy Hutchinson Damn I feel bad for you man
I doubt yours was a hemi....one of one thats why it went for 900000
Damn,thats fucked up
mine did same when i went military.
Randy Hutchinson
You should have limped after it as the new owner was leaving your driveway ......then throwing your crutches at him
Spy my Billy passing in front of the Boss 429 9:13 10:06 😥miss you. Taken way too soon. This was the first time he took our son, Brad to the auction. It feels good to spy him in the crowd with his friends, Hank and Ed. Again at 47:24 beside the 66 Shelby Transporter Truck. These cars were his passion! Mustang, Boss, Shelby.
What happened to him?
The only way to watch this is at 2X playback speed
In 1969 car was worth 3,400 now sold for 900 thousands bet you wish u bought a few for great invest ments
I always thought it would be cool if someone would build some identical replicas of these cars.
Maybe some lighter components, better brakes, but yeah. So you could beat the hell out of them.
@@Orcinus1967 😁yes
It's amazing that Mecum would allow their help to push on the spoilers of the cars. Totally idiotic.
They are not pushing on the wing, just the trunk lid.
My favourite muscle car is Buddy Repperton's Camaro, best car ever.
That auction is probably the highest concentration of beer bellies on the planet.
If you wanted to keep it. Why did you bring it....
The triple black 70 LS6 went “cheap” at 135k
I don't really like show cars that look to nice. I wanna speed and do shit. Not let the car sit in a garage all its life
Toyo TigerWEST porn hub
Yeah, same Motorcycles Guitars, Banjos etc. Except maybe guns. I could see just having them and not shooting them.
Than, why the hell are you even watching an hour of content? ...................That is history, and compelling to millions of gear-heads??? Short arms and deep pockets dreaming?
i used to think that as well...but we all know theres nothing like the smell and feel of a brand new car,,now imagine being in 1970 and buying a brand new muscle car..you wouldnt want to get a speck of dust on it
There are knuckleheads aplenty putting Mickey Thompson wheels and racing them. This is about unrestored cars with original paint, original wheels and and plenty of power.
wonder how many Jay Leno bought
1996 Viper GTS, blue with white stripes - most beautiful car ever made.
The announcers need to do a better job of fact checking before they speak. There were no 429 SCJ engines offered in the 69/70 Mustangs, that engine variant was available starting in 1971.
Sorry not B5 blue it’s B7
I believe that first car, the Daytona, was bought by David Spade.
my first car was a 1969 roadrunner. it was 8 years old. hard to keep running. rebuilt motor in tobacco barn. went by moms at 124 mph in 3rd gear. had 4 spd. we lined them up at school daily and 2 was picked to go race instead of class. cost was 325.00 she sold it when i went to japan for military. sold for one hundred dollars. year 1980 it was 11 years old then. time is a thief my friends. i am still mashing on it. drag raced son at track on motorcycles. best day ever. 3rd race i almost did him in. almost. time is a thief.
wish i could meet the Wellborns seem like very nice people.
Wow can you guys out there imagine sitting there just buying up all these beautys and not care? Then you get to go to one of your mansions and sit back and just wait for the next auction? It sounds like alot of fun but most of us will never get to do stuff like this!!
Oh,that HEMI Daytona ❤️
How come the Super Bees looked like Chargers? Super Bees were Coronets, different from Chargers
why do they push them there instead of driving them?
Because of the exhaust in closed building
A Bandit Firebird! Owned by Bert Reynolds.
90 k for a auto trans trans am ?
David Spades 900k Daytona. Car is absolutely beautiful. I would like to see it on jay leno
Aint no car in the world worth that much. People got more money than brains.
I agree with you - and they only buy these hefty cars to put in store on a carpet , nobody would dare driving almost a million dollar muscle-car anywhere .
12:02 yo i have a 1/18 diecast version of this it was around $200
I'd really love to be able to buy one of those cars but I can't afford it I'm a high-school Dropout never made much of my life but those sure are some beautiful cars now
Get into a trade such as an electrician or welder they can make over $100,000 a year
@Caleb which country could somebody make that kind of money..
Enlighten me pls
low life salesmen are like jackals.
Agreed
@Gappie Al Kebabi Fuck off.
I transported these and did the advertisement Vipors
I have never saw so many 71 hemi chargers in my life this guy must of owned all of them but I love Mopars and this guy has them
I've known him, bought many Mopars since '79 with / for, around him, and I always thought he had more than most dealerships back in the day could ASK for at any given time.
I read in a magazine many years ago that he owned 20 percent of the original production.
Beauty in the eye of the beholder definitely applies here..
All these old guys buying these cars will they live long enough to enjoy them and that old guy asking the bidder why can’t he go another 25k pissed me off
Got to hand It to the Americans, when it comes to cars no one does ugly like they do.
and drank 99 hi octane leaded premium fuel @5mpg
Cool video, I gave you a thumbs up and have a Great Thanksgiving.
