Lifelong Badger fan here. It’s a new era in college athletics. The portal and NIL are in full swing and my greatest concern with this team (and WI athletics, in general) is having no strategy or skill level in managing the portal and NIL. WI has always recruited the athlete who would make a 4-year commitment to the team. That’s no longer in the cards and we better figure out how to deal with it. It has to be difficult to recruit top talent to places like Madison (and Lincoln & Iowa City) given the total landscape. I wouldn’t call Wisconsin the most dynamic of sports institutions to deal with this new reality so it’s going to take quite a bit of time to evolve. My fear is the days of being able to compete for a National championship are over.

Collectives pool money, a honey pot, and go shopping. Coaches and players are for sale. I have no idea how this new era of NIL, transfer portal and combines will pan out. I look at how Cignetti turned IU around. Maybe there is hope.

Especially seeing the Hawkeyes putting in Brendan Sullivan in and actually dominating twice in a row. It’s not even that the quarterback has to be great, they just have to have the factor of changing it up so that the other teams’ defense can’t predict the movements as well (as Iowa did against Wisconsin with Sullivan)

It was way more competitive in the early 2010s because Wisconsin and Iowa both had the same style of play at similar levels. Great run game with solid defense. Nowadays, Iowa is finally finding their rhythm for Iowa and Wisconsin isn’t playing the way they are historically known for so it just feels like it doesn’t matter.
From another Iowa fan: I think this just varies from fan to fan. Some hate Wisconsin the most, some Minnesota, and some Nebraska. I do hope though that Wisconsin can figure it out in the future… just maybe not against us.

Two power running teams who have had great defenses for decades. Gotta love the rusty toolbox trophy that the managers play for the night before the heartland. The BADgers close with a resurgent Minnesota - also doubtful they'll win. Its very possible the BADgers will finish 5-7 and won't get invited to the toilet bowl, breaking a 22 year bowl game run.
We should probably get ready to watch Illinois beat us every year with our old head coach. What he's done so far in Illinois is absolutely impressive, they actually look like a competent perennial team
As an Ohio State fan, for the past few years, I've found myself wondering what it's gonna take for Wisconsin to start playing to their full potential. I always feel like they should be one of the better teams in the division, if not the country, but for one reason or another, they consistently underperform compared to what I feel they're capable of. Hoping to one day see them reach what they can really do.
Honestly this coaching staff sucks. They refuse to play talent. Where is Yac, Seagreaves, Brandon Lane. They need to give some guys way more snaps. Saw this with guys like Guereundo
The band was the reason people used to go see the Badgers in the eighties. I started watching them right after high school when Barry Alvarez took over when I was a senior in high school.
I have a feeling that Wisconsin will be good in a couple years like you said. I think a lot of the fanbase expected that coaching transition to work pretty quick and unless you have the best transfer class in cfb you’re just not going to do it that quickly. This game is just so unpredictable sometimes as well like I thought Iowa would have one loss by now and we have three. It takes a ton to get that season that just works and especially without the west division there will be a learning curve to get there. This season is gonna suck but Wisconsin football will be fine.

6:33 I’m sorry, but in my opinion- the streak ended in 2020. I do NOT consider the Duke Mayo’s Bowl berth they were given legitimate because they didn’t earn it. They went 4-3, had 3 games canceled due to numerous COVID outbreaks in the program, and were only given a berth because the school didn’t want the streak to end and there weren’t enough programs with winning records to fill bowl game spots.
I thought it was really funny last season when Nebraska didn’t get the 6 wins but this year it’s really heartbreaking and I’m hoping it works out for you all
I lived in Denver for many years my favorite CU/Nebraska game was when CU creamed the corn shuckers and they kept showing kids with tears flowing like crazy towards the end of the game
@madtownangler my favorite part of last year was when CU thought they had a bowl game in the bag and lost 8 straight games and losing what was originally a blowout to Stanford of all schools. Good times lol.
I am totally disappointed in this team. I know Chryst and Co left the cupboard bare, but Fickell should have been able to do something in the year and a half he's been in town,.
Watching this team is beyond painful. The only thing I keep going back to is MI fans wanted Harbough axed after many subpar seasons. Then won the Championship. Locke SUCKS for sure. And Chryst did drive us into the ground. Just look at the way they trended downwards year after year. I was hyped when we hired Fic, but damn this is trying. I agree we were never going anywhere with Chryst/Leonard. It seems like this team is a Hot Mess right now. I also agree he has to at least have 3 to 5 years. For sure we will know then. We had a rough schedule. The intended starter tearing his ACL in our first big game. I think the badgers turn it around, they just need to get this offense going and still mix in the power run game. It gets me so angry when it’s 3rd and short or 4th and short, then we come out into the pistol?! Boy if they don’t get into the Power I or some type of formation where we have a chance.
You are correct that was a missed call. That missed call wouldn't have made any difference as Iowa dominated both lines and slapped Badgers back to Madison.

It’s quite simple. All this bullshit where we are trying to be something we’re not needs to stop. Rehaul the entire program and hire a coach who understands the identity of the team. North and south ground and pound football with 300 pound O lineman and 260 pound fullbacks.

I hate to say it (I’ve been a Badger fan since I was 8), but Wisconsin is firmly a mid tier team (dangerously close to being worse). No matter if it’s a 4 or 12 team playoff, they cannot get the recruiting to compete with the better teams in the Big Ten. Their best scenario is one breakout year. P.S. I don’t think keeping Leonard would’ve helped. I bet recruiting would actually be worse since Fickell at least brings some name value. For all the passion they had for him, they would still be very mid tier.
I respectfully disagree on your thoughts on keeping Leonard. Chryst doomed the program when his recruiting coordinator (and his staff) left for Michigan State, and he didn't rebuild the department. Leonard, IMHO, would have rebuilt the recruiting dept. (To his credit, Fickell's first hire was the Cincinnati recruiting coordinator & staff. ) Fickell's name value is fading.
I do believe we have the players on the offensive side of the ball and Locke looks good then he throws a pick and can't get that out of his mind and he plays to scared and to tense and thats when he starts to play horrible.

I still have hope that fickell and longo can turn it around but I’m just coping at this point. It’s hard not to compare with Indiana who gets a new coach and turned it around immediately
I like the idea of hiring Sean Lewis as OC, but he JUST got to San Diego State this past year. I don’t know if he would leave that quick, even for his Alma mater. I think another similar option for OC would be Darrell Bevell. He’s not getting another OC job in the NFL, but I feel his offense could work at Wisky, at least better than Longo’s has. Every first down pass makes me want to reach through my TV and strangle Longo.

I have been watching the Badgers since the 60’s Overall the only bright spot was when Donna Shalela the Chancellor and she hired Pat Richter as AD and he hired Barry. Now the have an AD who fired Chryst to pass over Leonard s former pro player beloved by fans to hire Fickell a disaster. Admittedly Locke is a big part of the problem. Doesn’t show arm strength like others’. Gophers will wreck the Badgers.
I think he would consider it if we give him a call and he thinks Fickell may jump to Ohio state or someone else in the future. I think you have to make him say no

There's a lot of things at play here that have led us to here. Chryst's inability to build off of the success of Wisconsin in the 2010s and improve recruiting was a colossal failure. We should have been able to consistently get top 25 classes, it is inexcusable how horrible the recruiting was and he left the cupboard bare by the time he was fired. Even when Chryst did finally get a few highly ranked guys almost none of them worked out. Next was Fickell trying to drastically change Wisconsin's identity hiring Phil Longo. ALL Wisconsin needed to get over the hump and take the next step was improve recruiting by a decent amount and land a pretty good preferably dual threat qb to supplement Wisconsin's running identity. I have no fucking clue why Fickell thought this was a good idea. Tressel hasn't been quite as bad as Longo but the lack of adjustments by both of them has been extremely damning. We knew Iowa was gonna run almost every down and we still didn't even stack the box!
8:00 You say there's a lot of reporters with revisionist history about where the program was at in 2020, 2021, etc. I think maybe you are downgrading them more than you should. They had very strong recruiting classes in 2020 and 2021. They had a pretty solid year in 2021, although they lost a couple of games they really should have won. 2020 was COVID, so taking anything away from the performance that year is crazy. 2022 we have no way of knowing how it plays out if Chryst isn't fired midseason. That team quit on him against Illinois, but he didn't have a chance to turn it around and Leonhard was given an impossible task midseason as a first time interim head coach. At the very least I think they beat MSU if Chryst is still the coach and I think they'd have had a chance against Minnesota as well. The problem is so many of us fans wanted to take the next step forward and we saw that Chryst wasn't capable of doing that. Instead they've taken two steps backwards, one while Chryst was coach and one while Fickell's been coach. We'll see if they start taking forward steps, but next year is a rough schedule too.
Sorry you are a Wisconsin fan in NJ, we, PSU fans, have to be annoying. But yea im worried about the program for Wisconsin. I'm not sure they make a bowl this year and I feel they dropped the ball. They are trying to make them a passing team which they are NOT and they can't get good enough players because of the standards to be accepted to Wisconsin. Now they are just an average team They need to go back to running the ball and playing good defense or else they will end up like Nebraska in the Big 10. Now they have Oregon to try to beat to even win the Big Ten title.
Gophers have one of their worst teams in program history??? We could easily be 8-3 right if we had hit a FG against UNC and didn't have the refs screw up against Mich. On top of that we just lost by 1 against the #4 team in the country. Over the last 5 years the Gophs had a player drafted in the 1st and 2nd round of the NFL draft and that streak will likely continue this year with this star-studded defense. The team this year has a great group of seniors with talent and depth all over the roster. Our record does not tell the full picture. Your evaluation of the badgers is correct, but for the U, you're way off my friend.
Side note, wisco fans are so fucking entitled to think they can have 20 years of great football and then hand the torch to Fickell, who was the best hire at the time, and then continue that streak without a couple skiddish seasons. Used to be you could count on WI being competitive enough to make a run at the Western Division, and maybe a trip to Indy to play for the conference championship. Those were good seasons for the Badgers. And really that’s about as far as they would ever go. They’re not, nor will they ever be, CFP material. Not with our weather and academic requirements. The caliber of talent position players needed for a CFP team wasn’t coming here. Nor will they. And if you thought differently then you’re an idiot. But now I don’t see them anywhere other than buried mid-pack. Ever. There are no more divisions to win, and even the team rivalries for like the Axe are meaningless. And don’t get me started on team travel nowadays. Shuttling kids coast to coast to play sports is ridiculous. But someone is getting rich so that’s all that matters. Fickell was hired because he has CFP experience. Chryst did not. Fickell won’t get any experience here, and I say becomes expendable at the end of next season. They went 13-1 in 2018 i think. Ik that's just one year but they would have made the CFP that year if it was even 8 teams. The 3 years they went to the rose bowl would all have been CFP teams if it existed at the time. Wisconsin has had teams that could have definitely made the CFP. I do agree though that they never got the QBs or WRs to be a consistent top dog like OSU, Bama, etc.

6:33 I’m sorry, but in my opinion- the streak ended in 2020. I do NOT consider the Duke Mayo’s Bowl berth they were given legitimate because they didn’t earn it. They went 4-3, had 3 games canceled due to numerous COVID outbreaks in the program, and were only given a berth because the school didn’t want the streak to end and there weren’t enough programs with winning records to fill bowl game spots.

I lived in Denver for many years my favorite CU/Nebraska game was when CU creamed the corn shuckers and they kept showing kids with tears flowing like crazy towards the end of the game
@madtownangler my favorite part of last year was when CU thought they had a bowl game in the bag and lost 8 straight games and losing what was originally a blowout to Stanford of all schools. Good times lol.

Badgers constantly breaking my heart
Watching this team is beyond painful. The only thing I keep going back to is MI fans wanted Harbough axed after many subpar seasons. Then won the Championship. Locke SUCKS for sure. And Chryst did drive us into the ground. Just look at the way they trended downwards year after year. I was hyped when we hired Fic, but damn this is trying. I agree we were never going anywhere with Chryst/Leonard. It seems like this team is a Hot Mess right now. I also agree he has to at least have 3 to 5 years. For sure we will know then. Full Blown Rebuild is Right On.
All this time i had no idea you were a badger fan.... This season feels so much worse to me than last year by far. I knew we would struggle after i went to the USC game. That was a game we could have definitely won. I feel your pain.
We had a rough schedule. The intended starter tearing his ACL in our first big game. I think the badgers turn it around, they just need to get this offense going and still mix in the power run game. It gets me so angry when it’s 3rd and short or 4th and short, then we come out into the pistol?! Boy if they don’t get into the Power I or some type of formation where we have a chance.

Now I know why this was one of the few channels that didn't get on the "Downfall of Bama" train a few weeks back. We played 1 complete game this year so far......it was against the Badgers and I am willing to say that game looks a bit different if Van Dyke played.

It’s quite simple. All this bullshit where we are trying to be something we’re not needs to stop. Rehaul the entire program and hire a coach who understands the identity of the team. North and south ground and pound football with 300 pound O lineman and 260 pound fullbacks.

I hate to say it (I’ve been a Badger fan since I was 8), but Wisconsin is firmly a mid tier team (dangerously close to being worse). No matter if it’s a 4 or 12 team playoff, they cannot get the recruiting to compete with the better teams in the Big Ten. Their best scenario is one breakout year.
P.S. I don’t think keeping Leonard would’ve helped. I bet recruiting would actually be worse since Fickell at least brings some name value. For all the passion they had for him, they would still be very mid tier.
I respectfully disagree on your thoughts on keeping Leonard. Chryst doomed the program when his recruiting coordinator (and his staff) left for Michigan State, and he didn't rebuild the department. Leonard, IMHO, would have rebuilt the recruiting dept. (To his credit, Fickell's first hire was the Cincinnati recruiting coordinator & staff. ) Fickell's name value is fading.
I do believe we have the players on the offensive side of the ball and Locke looks good then he throws a pick and can't get that out of his mind and he plays to scared and to tense and thats when he starts to play horrible.

This past weekend was really rough. Locke isn't the guy. I don't know what the coaches are thinking half the time. They're in a 2-4-5 defense against Iowa. Lol. They ran for 300 yards.
That is frustrating (lots of programs are dumb right now, including my Nittany Lions and don't get me started with my Irish)
I still have hope that fickell and longo can turn it around but I’m just coping at this point. It’s hard not to compare with Indiana who gets a new coach and turned it around immediately
I like the idea of hiring Sean Lewis as OC, but he JUST got to San Diego State this past year. I don’t know if he would leave that quick, even for his Alma mater.
I think another similar option for OC would be Darrell Bevell. He’s not getting another OC job in the NFL, but I feel his offense could work at Wisky, at least better than Longo’s has. Every first down pass makes me want to reach through my TV and strangle Longo.

There's a lot of things at play here that have led us to here. Chryst's inability to build off of the success of Wisconsin in the 2010s and improve recruiting was a colossal failure. We should have been able to consistently get top 25 classes, it is inexcusable how horrible the recruiting was and he left the cupboard bare by the time he was fired. Even when Chryst did finally get a few highly ranked guys almost none of them worked out. Next was Fickell trying to drastically change Wisconsin's identity hiring Phil Longo. ALL Wisconsin needed to get over the hump and take the next step was improve recruiting by a decent amount and land a pretty good preferably dual threat qb to supplement Wisconsin's running identity. I have no fucking clue why Fickell thought this was a good idea. Tressel hasn't been quite as bad as Longo but the lack of adjustments by both of them has been extremely damning. We knew Iowa was gonna run almost every down and we still didn't even stack the box!

8:00 You say there's a lot of reporters with revisionist history about where the program was at in 2020, 2021, etc. I think maybe you are downgrading them more than you should. They had very strong recruiting classes in 2020 and 2021. They had a pretty solid year in 2021, although they lost a couple of games they really should have won. 2020 was COVID, so taking anything away from the performance that year is crazy. 2022 we have no way of knowing how it plays out if Chryst isn't fired midseason. That team quit on him against Illinois, but he didn't have a chance to turn it around and Leonhard was given an impossible task midseason as a first time interim head coach. At the very least I think they beat MSU if Chryst is still the coach and I think they'd have had a chance against Minnesota as well.
The problem is so many of us fans wanted to take the next step forward and we saw that Chryst wasn't capable of doing that. Instead they've taken two steps backwards, one while Chryst was coach and one while Fickell's been coach. We'll see if they start taking forward steps, but next year is a rough schedule too.
I got to watch the Badgers go from nothing to consistently competitive. We are a pretty good team that sends alot of people to the NFL.

Wisconsin should have won the big ten west every year and built a very strong program, instead this is the product.... very sad for the B1G and Wisconsin fans.

Gophers have one of their worst teams in program history??? We could easily be 8-3 right if we had hit a FG against UNC and didn't have the refs screw up against Mich. On top of that we just lost by 1 against the #4 team in the country. Over the last 5 years the Gophs had a player drafted in the 1st and 2nd round of the NFL draft and that streak will likely continue this year with this star-studded defense. The team this year has a great group of seniors with talent and depth all over the roster. Our record does not tell the full picture. Your evaluation of the badgers is correct, but for the U, you're way off my friend.
Side note, wisco fans are so fucking entitled to think they can have 20 years of great football and then hand the torch to Fickell, who was the best hire at the time, and then continue that streak without a couple skiddish seasons. Like cmon, give the man a few years to figure it out and then start bitching about where your program is at. Also, running an air raid offense makes no sense in the former big ten west and especially not at wisco, good move to fire the OC.

Long-time fan, and local resident. Wisconsin football is dead. Killed by the institutional greed of the BIG 18 Conference. Used to be you could count on WI being competitive enough to make a run at the Western Division, and maybe a trip to Indy to play for the conference championship. Those were good seasons for the Badgers. And really that’s about as far as they would ever go. They’re not, nor will they ever be, CFP material. Not with our weather and academic requirements. The caliber of talent position players needed for a CFP team wasn’t coming here. Nor will they. And if you thought differently then you’re an idiot.
But now I don’t see them anywhere other than buried mid-pack. Ever. There are no more divisions to win, and even the team rivalries for like the Axe are meaningless. And don’t get me started on team travel nowadays. Shuttling kids coast to coast to play sports is ridiculous. But someone is getting rich so that’s all that matters.
Fickell was hired because he has CFP experience. Chryst did not. Fickell won’t get any experience here, and I say becomes expendable at the end of next season. It will be a revolving door of coaches every 3-4 years from here on out. Great job selling out, Badgers. I’ve retired as a fan. I’m done buying gear, done attending games, and done watching on TV. From here on out the Badgers should consider becoming Bowl-eligible as a successful year. Because I don’t see things improving under this ridiculous mega-conference bed they’ve made. I’m 62 and have seen the best years of Wisconsin football.

They went 13-1 in 2018 i think. Ik that's just one year but they would have made the CFP that year if it was even 8 teams. The 3 years they went to the rose bowl would all have been CFP teams if it existed at the time. Wisconsin has had teams that could have definitely made the CFP. I do agree though that they never got the QBs or WRs to be a consistent top dog like OSU, Bama, etc.
