Elite Roman cavalry wore them during tournaments, but they have also been dug up at various battle sites including Teutoburg, implying they were on some occasions worn in actual battle. The mask here is an actual archeological find, called the Nijmegen helmet.

When I saw this mask at the museum, I got amazed by remembering immediately this album cover, then in my mind I reproduced this song. Other than that, the museum has more to show about the Batavians and Romans: Franks, post-Renaissance period, paintings about Nijmegen (maps and panoramic scapes), and even contemporary art.
