    In the second part of our series on the history of computer animation, we follow the early pioneers to Hollywood! We explore Ken Knowlton's BEFLIX and his collaboration with artists Stan VanDerBeek and Lillian Schwartz, as well as Ivan Sutherland's move to Utah and influence on a generation graphic innovators. We also meet Edwin Catmull, examine the Scanimate system, and reach the early pinnacle of Tron!

    There's something funny about TRON - a little trivia: Despite its pioneering use of CGI, this movie was passed over by the Motion Picture Academy for an award in animation because they said Lisberger "cheated" by using computers. Lisberger is quoted as calling that decision "ironic".

    It's still amazing how good Tron looks after nearly 40 years!

    6:17 What was a “frame buffer”? It was a block of memory large enough to hold an entire image frame. At 640×480 resolution and monochrome, that was about 300K bytes, at a 6-figure price tag.
    The NYIT Computer Graphics Lab, funded by a wealthy benefactor, bought 3 of them. This enabled them to do the first experiments in RGB colour.

    0:48 Unix was not a programming language, it was an operating system. And a philosophy for how an operating system should work. Nowadays the embodiment of this is called “Linux”.

    • @KieferSkunk
      @KieferSkunk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could be forgiven for calling it a programming language, in that its original purpose was to facilitate programming mainframes. But you're right, it's not a language itself.

    • @lawrencedoliveiro9104
      @lawrencedoliveiro9104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unix was never designed for “programming mainframes”. The whole Bell Labs computer setup was mainframe-free.

    In the world of arcade video games, many of us will remember Pong, Space Wars, and the early 1980's Asteriods, as some of the first Vector Graphics display games that were commercially available. By 1983, to my knowledge, we saw the last of the color vector games, with Star Wars & Star Trek combat flight games, and Tempest.

    Enjoying these, great work.
    A minor quibble: the voiceover could be a little more relaxed.
    Looking forward to the next one.

      It's a minor issue. Maybe just a little slower! Hard to catch what you say sometimes. I didn't mean to come off like a dick. Top work.

      Thank YOU for having made it! I find this topic totally fascinating, actually.
      I mean, CGI is reaching a point in which 3D humans are starting to get indistinguishable from the real ones (they are still walking a little bit through the uncanny valley - but not for long)... the range of possibilities that this opens are endless!
      I mean, just imagine people doing new movies with well known deceased actors, such as Audrey Hepburn and so on..
      Another pretty interesting thing is that it's getting easier and easier to the average joe, through the development of simpler tools and A.I, to create more and more complex and realistically special effects without being a expert on CGI and without spending hundreds of millions of dollars.
      Let alone thinking about how this would affect things like "right to image" and people creating fake hyperrealistic videos of whatever they want to spread lies.
      I would love to watch a video with your take about the future of CGI, by the way.

    • @picsnportraits
      @picsnportraits  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree with you. I've planned for this to be a four part series, with the last video focusing on the 2000s and what the future holds. I really like the idea that actors could portray deceased actors portraying a character, but there may be some ethical issues there. Great comment, thanks again for your interest!

    CG history, part 2 of 4... Bell labs and Boeing employees begin to defined Computer Graphics, with simple Vector displays. In a cathode ray tube (TV monitor), the electron gun fires points and lines directly, versus raster scan, where 1 gun (B&W), then 3 gun (RGB), where the guns continuously scan top to bottom, back and forth, though each new horizontal line is omni-directional, e.g. L-R, L-R, L-R, etc. (30 frames pet second). In 1970's films, this is why one can see a T.V. monitor's flicker occasionally, since film general runs at 24 frames a second.

    At first I thought I mistakenly clicked on NiN's "Came back haunted".
    4:27 Made me remember about TF1 "Le Cinéma du Dimanche soir", and after verification, it was also created with scanimate, along with the phenomenal TF1 startup/shutdown IDs.

    I'm surprised there's no mention of Magi Synthevision which did work on Tron and had a unique take on the principle of computer graphics by employing their previous work on nuclear meltdown simulations. To summarize, they had been commissioned to do 'ray tracing' of nuclear particles in the event of a meltdown to see which parts of a reactor would be most vulnerable. One of the engineers thought, 'what if we trace light over these models and bounce them into a 'lens', and thus ray tracing cgi was born (in 1966 I believe) which is just now making it's way into realtime 3d accelerator cards. The process is extremely processor intensive, but is used for rendering most film cgi as it's fairly 'accurate' in portraying shading from light sources.
