A note that I didn't include in the video (because I didn't want to bog it down with too much setup and I didn't think anyone would care enough to call me on it. I was wrong!) There are many things about Dark Side of the Rainbow that I don't explicitly address in the video, and many people have said that I clearly didn't catch all of the synchronicities that exist after seeing my score. This is true! I went into DSotR as blind as I could. In a scientific experiment I wanted to judge all of these movies by the same standard, which is me going in without any prior knowledge of what it should be and what I should be seeing. I could absolutely have done the research and chronicled everything anyone has ever observed, but that's not at all fair because people haven't done that over the course of decades with The Shining or Shrek. All of the scores are based on what I could catch on the first viewing. I'm positive that each of these movies would only score higher and higher the more times I watched it, and the more people were in on it the more synchronicities could be crowd-sourced, as they have been for wizard of oz. ALSO: Sorry I didn't mute the audio when I was watching the movies, a lot of you guys feel very strongly that I should have. My bad! I shoulda done that! But what really matters is that I judged all of the movies according to the same criteria, so it's still SCIENTIFICALLY SOUND in my book.
@scouserfourteen it's not fair to call him out on not noticing things that take like 3 leaps in judgement each in one viewing. Dark Side of the Rainbow has had 30 years for people to jump to conclusions, if they did the same with any of the other movies they'd have way higher scores too. Also, he got #6 and #7.
I understand trying to be fair but ya can’t do an experiment on something unless you know how it is supposed to go. The whole point of the dark side of the rainbow is to play after the third lion. I believe it is unfair to change that in order to “be on par with the other movies” when that is not how Oz is supposed to be viewed. I actually think it makes it much more of a legend that you have to play after the third roar, because like who the fuck discovered that! And it’s uncanny how right at that spot it works tremendous
Yes fuck that but with mushrooms. On "on the run" everything became matrixey. On the eclipse song I was literally going down a rabbit hole. "And all that you touch and all that you see.." And my reality was just being stripped away from me.
I once tried this with the Spongebob movie, and the Great Gig in the Sky lined up EXACTLY with the scene where Spongebob and Patrick almost died. It was an amazing experience.
The spongebob movie is honestly one of the best movies to watch with this album lol. Perfect synchronicity top to bottom. Iron Giant works pretty well too. Honestly just animated movies in general I've noticed.
The reason that Wizard of Oz/Dark Side synchronycity is such a legend is because they were the first pairing that was noticed. Both are iconic works of art that deal with fantastical imagery but classic themes.
@@CadgerChristmasLightShow I have tried.. I'm gonna try those Shrooms.. I only understand the oz and Hollywood thing .. but as for this.. I dont.. I was wondering if it had to do with the mk ultra bullshit..or like that dress gates back in 2015 ..
The Best Syncs I have found are Avenge Sevenfold City of Evil to Evil Dead 2 Avenge Sevenfold Hail to the King to Army of Darkness Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare to Blade 2 Disturbed Down with the Sickness album to LEGO Batman Offsprings Greatest Hits to Sonic the Hedgehog The Wall to Alice and Wunderland. It also works if you do it to the live action Tim Burton Alice. The Matrix to Metallica’s Black Album and the Matrix Reloaded to Metallica Load. Evanescence’s Fallen will Sync with either The original black and white Dracula, Bram Stokers Dracula or Dracula Untold. That Sync series was called Fallen Dracula. All of these I have tested and will run smoothly if you set the albums to resync. All of them have specific times to start the album for instance City of Evil needs to start as the flower logo fades to black on Evil Dead 2. If you need help figuring out the timing on any of these let me know
I actually don't mind the dissonance of "Over the Rainbow" and "On the Run". "On the Run" adds an unease to "Over the Rainbow", indicating that even though we yearn for the greener grass of other places and ways, there may be danger, horror and disharmony waiting for us there.
Everyone listen to on the run with headphones on it. If you listen, as dorthy changes her eyes to the otherside of the screen, the audio pans EXACTLY with her eyes
This is astronaut noise. Dorothy is about to go on the ride of her life. In the Wizard chamber she finds out that she ends up having to go on yet another journey. I agree it is very haunting.
I think what's so magical about dark side of the rainbow is that it mixes two such iconic pieces of art from the past century that even when the music and scenes don't match up it is still can be a beautiful and trippy artistic experiment.
I tried watching Zoolander with Dark Side of the Moon recently, and it was actually perfect in so many areas. Starting from the beginning of the Paramount logo, here are all the moments I can immediately think of that work: 1. The Malaysian army almost rhythmically marches to the register noises at the beginning of Speak To Me. 2. Mugatu’s head comes into focus as soon as Breathe begins. 3. During each of the characters’ introductory titles, On The Run intensifies accordingly. 4. As Mugatu is talking with Derek’s manager, the ambience between On The Run and Time plays. 5. The alarm clocks chime in the moment the announcer presents the trophy. 6. Both Derek and Hansel’s intros are elevated by the Time’s suspenseful introduction. 7. During the lines “you missed the starting gun” in time, Derek is told he didn’t win. Every single cut and reaction during the rest of the ceremony synchronizes with the music almost perfectly. 8. When Derek looks at his reflection and gets mud splashed in his face by Hansel’s scooter, the women start singing, indicating a slightly more somber tone to the song, fitting the turn of the scene. 9. As Derek is turning to look at his billboard, camera panning around him, the female voices build suspense. When he sees the billboard, the lead singer begins singing again. 10. When the day is over and Derek is resting in his apartment contemplating his looks, the singer describes hanging on in quiet desperation, and the song being over. 11. During the scene where Derek and his roommates are talking in their apartment kitchen, Time’s lyrics “home, home again” kick in. 12. As Derek’s friends are spraying gasoline on themselves, mouths wide open, Great Gig in the Sky is playing, and it looks like they’re singing their hearts out. 13. The singing intensifies slightly as Derek’s friends die in a massive explosion. 14. Great Gig in the Sky is playing throughout an entire funeral service. 15. As Derek is negotiating with his manager, Money starts playing. 16. Around the end of Money, on the final line, “away,” mermaid Derek swims out of picture on a TV screen. 17. As Derek is breaking down at being disowned by his father, the sad, drawn out transition between Money and Us and Them starts playing. When Derek looks into the sky and asks “who am I,” Us and Them begins almost immediately afterwards. 18. The smacks on Derek’s butt from the masseuse is rhythmically in sync with Us and Them. 19. Any Color You Like begins immediately as Mugatu’s brainwashing video begins playing. The entire scene matches the surreal vibe of the music, rhythmically and thematically. The guitar kicks in when a devilish Mugatu face appears with explosions behind him. The proceeding sequence of events, with Derek being confused and eventually fighting off cardboard cutouts, also matches rhythmically. 20. Derek and Hansel begin arguing at the club as soon as Eclipse starts playing. Their gestures usually match the song in some way. 21. Derek looks like he says “all you feel” during Eclipse. 22. When the female singer in Eclipse shouts “everyone you meet,” Derek jumps, like he’s been startled. 23. During the powerfully-delivered closing lines, “and everything under the sun is in tune,” Hansel pulls out his scooter. He pulls it out violently during the word “sun,” then sets it on the ground during the word “tune.” During the line “but the sun is eclipsed by the moon,” Hansel makes his final comment and rides away. He rides away as the closing word, “moon,” is being sung. 24. During the time between the argument and Derek and Hansel’s fashion competition, the heartbeat concluding Eclipse and starting Speak To Me plays. The simplicity of the heartbeat ends and the registers begin sounding when David Bowie takes off his sunglasses. 25. Breathe begins as soon as the competition begins. The entire scene is given an almost majestic tone with Derek and Hansel striking poses. 26. During and slightly after Breathe’s line “grab it and run,” Hansel pulls his underwear out of his pants. 27. As soon as Derek begins trying to take his underwear out of his pants, On The Run begins playing. That’s about as far as I’ve gotten, my attention span conked out after that. Chances are, I’ll edit this comment in the future as I view this version of the movie multiple times.

The thing is, if you wanted to record an album that synced with a movie TODAY, you could easily do it. But in the early 70s, the logistics of pulling that off would have been... maybe not impossible, but a considerable pain in the butt.
Back in college, we were watching Dark Side of the Rainbow when it got out-of-sync. Rather than trying to get it back in-sync well over halfway into the movie, we impulsively put the album to a season of Invader Zim. It worked surprisingly well.
@@abigailment I truly don't know Invader Zim well enough to say. We were using the DVDs that someone else had left in the TV lounge. And sure, knock yourself out!
I think it’s extremely dependent upon the viewer’s familiarity or affection for both the film and the album- the more you want it to sync up, the more you will be rewarded- we tend to seek patterns in randomness. For me personally, the most synchronous segment is ‘time/great gig in the sky.’
“‘Breath’ is an existential song about feeling stuck and worrying you’re running out of time in your life.” ‘Shrek is just enjoying his bug dinner and ear wax candles.’...while the towns people are planing to run him out of his swamp...almost as if he’s running out of time. It’s not a metaphorical synch...it’s literal.
I think you could say that it gives t more meaning thematically, almost as though to foreshadow that Shrek doesn't want to be doing this really, but he feels like he has to
I'd say it's more that Shrek is happy in his rut, but because he doesn't KNOW he's in one. His life as he knows it IS ending, to be replaced by something better, richer, and more rewarding.
No one is talking about how on the blart side of the mall as he begins to come up the elevator crying, us and them begins to climax with the saxophones. It was really a spiritual experience
I just watched The Wizard of Oz for the first time the other day and someone mentioned the "Dark Side of the Moon" thing. I then found "The Dark Side of Oz" video on TH-cam and looked at it for a bit. Then I found your video and spontaneously watched all of it. It was fun! You said "good night" at the end and I wondered how you knew I watched it at night ... I looked at the date and I saw you posted the video on this same day a year ago! I was confused for a bit, thinking you uploaded the video just now. But no, we're not in 2020 anymore. Anyway, it's kind of cool that you did all this work so now we don't have to!
A friend of mine is a huge conspiracy nut and equally obsessed with The Shining, so when I explained the Room 237 moon thing to him, I think the last of his sanity finally left him.
I actually had it confirmed by a very reliable source (Billy Meier) that Stanley Kubrick was the director who filmed the fake moon landing footage. He was an Illuminati insider and he revealed much of their plans for a mind controlled future in A Clockwork Orange. Notice how women in the movie have unnatural colored hair like pink and purple. The reason he was able to reveal this was because he knew what was being planned for the future. Eyes Wide Shut ended up getting him killed. He showed a rough cut of the film to the executives and died 6 days later. They then made cuts to the film against his wishes and the cut content has never been released. I suggest you pay attention to your friend. Just ignore anything about flat earth theory and reptilians. These are disinfo campaigns by the CIA which were created to discredit anyone speaking the truth.
@@goldbedvids8580 it’s about 25 minutes long and mostly instrumental. The vocals/lyrics all take place before Dave goes into the monolith or after he shows up again later where he sees his old self. The music greatly fits the mood since it’s all visual craziness anyway and the lyrics uses are pretty fitting thematically as well. Basically anything anyone ever thinks is that phenomenal about Dark Side of the Rainbow can also be said about Echoes+Final chapter of 2001. Found a link to a version on here: th-cam.com/video/rn7MmS3vazU/w-d-xo.html
Oh yeah buddy that shit is so trippy and I've enjoyed a lot of late nights just being mesmerized by the audio/visual stimulation, not even drugs needed for that it all just do the drugs for u 🙂
21:00 That car exploding in sync to eclipse is not only rhythmically on point, it fits the emotion. Thats definitely my favorite part of this whole thing Edit: its a bit early, but you get my point
At 7:53 I find it absolutely insane that the scarecrows line fits perfectly between the end of the verse and the start of the bridge on time, like knowing pink floyd that sort of thing could have absolutely been something they would fit in as a background sound, kinda insane stuff
"It's accepting that the art has value as an experience between you and it- removed from the person who created it". That's deep stuff, man. I made a 30 min film which I later synced to Dark Side and was blown away with how well it went together (frankly, almost better than the original music I put in). I'm going to watch it now and score it with your scoring method and see what I get.
Let me just tell you, it was found way before '95. My dad, grew up in the 80s always tells me about how after one of the lions roars, you start the album and bam.
I just want to say, even nonstoners can love Dark Side of the Rainbow. I have a copy on DVD (before it was pulled for copyright issues) in full quadraphonic sound, as intended, and hearing Money in surround is quite interesting. I've watched it so many times, that I've come to forget (and dislike when I hear it) the original soundtrack. Whether it was intentional or not, it's an amazing experience, even when stone-cold sober. Another great mashup is Disney's Alice in Wonderland synced to The Wall. It's definitely worth it if you haven't seen it before.
Dude you are sooooo bang on with this one, you don't need to be into conspiracy theories or the slightest bit high to see that visuals and instrumentation synch up perfectly! This dude dies not know what he is talking about. No, There is no science here, just a guy with a shakey soapbox ... all you do is start the album in the third roar of the MGM lion and amazing things will happen and you don' need to be high - again - I'm high right now but that means nothing. Nothing! Oh and don't you dare subscribe to my ridiculous CHANNEL. So sorry buddy downvoted and not subscribing here.
I'm not saying Stanley Kubrick created The Shining to be backed up with "Dark Side of the Moon." That would be wacky and stretching a bit too far. But if it is pure synchronicity, it's the strangest and most compelling synchronicity I've ever felt. My favorite thing about "Shining Side of the Moon" is how it turns "Us and Them" into Dick Hallorann's theme song, loaded with interpretations and portents. It plays when he gets introduced, and talks to Danny about "shining" and Room 237. On the second album loop, the song starts again when Jack decides to check out the room and we see the suite in detail for the first time...and it's ALSO the point where Dick Hallorann personally gets involved in the story again, picking up RIGHT as he has his vision freakout.
The transition from “Great gig in the sky” during the tornado to Money and the next three songs in OZ should give It another 100 points. Also Remember that the album was released during a time of double sided records. So they could have intended the B side to started at different times throughout, which could increase the sync
Exactly, was blown away the first time I saw it back in 96.still today it syncs up perfectly. The cha ching and color transition when the door opens is perfect
The color aspect is the real cool thing about the transition into Oz for me: the start of the b-side, the midpoint of the album is when the movie goes for black & white to colored, just like the beam of light does at the vertical midpoint of the album cover.
The topic of syncing Dark Side of the Moon to Wizard of Oz has been around since at least the ‘80s. That’s when I learned about it - before DVDs and CDs when you could rent movies on VHS. At the end of side 1 of the album you had to flip the album over and time the needle drop on side 2 to a specific spot in the movie.
I have the record and I was considering using that and then I realized I'd have to time Side B somehow lol. Perhaps that could lead to some fun experimenting though!
After I watched this I went and watched Green Lantern synched to Dark Side of the Moon. It also fits pretty well. It's gotta be something about the structure of that album that just caters to a standard structure of a Hollywood movie
I'm 59. I've been listening to Dark Side of The Moon since I was ten years old. I'm loving this video! I thought it was going to be more podcasty and planned to listen in bed but I need to watch this.
A game I like to play with people when we are bored AF is to take turns choosing songs, pick a cartoon we love, and watch it with the sound off. Sometimes it's a bust but man, when you get Spongebob belting out some Metallica lyrics perfectly synched up its magical
I synced up The Dark Side Of The Moon with Ouran High School Host Club. And it’s a magical experience. I can’t remember when I synced it up with parts, but I remember that the guitar solo in time starts when Hunni grabs and spins on Haruhi.
Some trivia -Floyd did movie soundtracks back in the late 60s and early 70s and when Stanley Kubrick made clockwork orange he wanted to make the soundtrack using pieces from the 1970 rock opera song "atom heart mother" by Pink Floyd. Unfortunately he never got permission however the album cover (picture of a cow) can be seen in the record store scene. 3 movie soundtracks were made from Floyd albums ( more, zazbrinzkie point and La valle) so its no coincidence these albums sync so well to movies as all their albums were pretty much spaced out like them. Happy listening to all.
You forgot meddle and the song echoes which matches up quite nicely with the last part of 2001 a space odyssey if you start it at the part titled "jupiter and beyond the infinite" turns a booring 20 minutes of the film it something awesome!
I found out about “dark side of the rainbow” after learning you can sync The Shining with Abbey Road look it up! Kubrick definitely got inspired from this!
I love that you did this. A ton(!) of work. Your understanding of film is incredible. However, the synchronicity between this album and ANY film isn't meant for deep, sober analysis. The whole idea of watching this IS to be high or in at least a slightly different head-space...making any coincidences seem absolutely incredible and even purposeful. This whole video could be a popular lecture in film school about the connection between music and film beyond the actual soundtrack, but you'd end up with a bunch of students who came back the next day telling you how incredible it was and how they found so many more things you missed, cuz they went home and got stoned and watched it. It's just fundamentally meant to be an 'altered state' kind of experience. Again, this was an incredible video and you're pretty sharp, keep it up. (my personal experience of watching Dark Side of The Rainbow for the first time was at a laser light show in an actual theater...and yes, I was on mushrooms) Cheers!
Fantastic job making such an entertaining and intriguing video essay about this. Glad to see someone else was inspired to try Blart side of the mall, I had a blast with that one and it was awesome to see the variety of films you tested this with. You’ve inspired me to try and create as well, keep up the great work!
Awe man. You gotta mute the movie. I personally think that ruins the vibe. Also the lyrics "balanced on the biggest wave, race towards an early grave" is right around when Dorothy is walking along the top of the fence and falls and the guy races in to rescue her then sits down like he's having a heart attack.
Also “on the run” starts as soon as she falls, and before that the lyrics “turn around” sync with Dorothy turning around and then right after “all you touch” as she grabs some guy’s arm (the same guy who picks her up after she falls, don’t know his name)
I recently realized why the pacing of the movie is so strange. Whenever the vocals change pitch, Paul changes what hes doing. If the vocals are held, he holds the action until they shift. Bsotm might be a coincidence but it's hard to think so when it all matches up so perfectly, down to changes in actions
Pretty sure the movie is "traditionally" supposed to be on mute. I've only done it with Oz, but it obviously avoids the sound clashes, which can get pretty annoying tbh
Really enjoyed this. About 10 years ago, I created a DSOTR DVD with windows movie maker and added narrative comments in the side borders. Etched a pink shaded picture of a sink on top of the disk and titled it "the pink sync". It also included the third chapter of 2001, a space odyssey synced up with echoes from meddle. As you mentioned, I had to do a lot of tweeking to get everything to line up just right.
This should count for many points: "Money" Starts as Dorothy enters Oz. Money is significant because the whole Wizard of Oz Story is an allegory about the United States monetary policy (which prints worthless paper money) The Emerald city is built on the perceived power of The Wizard. But the Wizard is a fake. The green Emerald City represents green paper money which looks valuable but is fake/worthless compared to Gold or Silver. This demonstrates the "power of belief" and also the danger of being attracted to something that glitters and failing to recognize things with the highest value like Home and Family. "The Wizard Of Oz Was Written In The 1890s, And It Carried A Secret Message That Wasn't Decoded Until 1964. ... But no one noticed the clear parallels to American politics in the 1890s until a historian named Henry Littlefield published an analysis of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1964"
Dude money plays because it's the first part of the movie in color. That got a lot of money in theaters because it came out when color movies were not common place
Gotta say, this was actually pretty interesting to watch as a Pink Floyd fan. Lots of interesting details everywhere, and I honestly wish this video became more popular as it's really interesting.
Here's an interesting one: Take 'Echoes', which is the entire B side of Pink Floyd's 'Meddle' album, and start the first "ping" with the "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" title card in the final sequence of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I've done the edit myself, but I can't upload it anywhere as it gets pulled down on copyright grounds. Pink Floyd did score several films, "The Committee" (1968), "More" (1969), "Zabriskie Point" (modified by director, 1970), and "La Vallée" aka "Obscured by Clouds" (1971). The latter is one of my favourite Floyd albums, and clearly shows the seeds of what would become Dark Side of the Moon. It is said that Kubrick approached the band at one point for soundtrack work, but it never panned out.
Love the More soundtrack. Wonder if they will ever find or release it to buy. Not sure if it will ever be seen again. The Echoes Jupiter sync is amazing. Has to be the full 20+ minute album version.
The Oz sync done here is about 4 seconds off. The album was started too soon. For best results, use the "standard" CD version (no Mobile Fidelity, etc) and start it immediately after the third lion roar. You will know if it's working if you see the credit “Produced by Mervyn LeRoy,” fade during the transition from Speak to Me to Breathe. Once you get the hang of it any drifting that occurs later will have little consequence. The alarm clock on Time will start IMMEDIATELY after the scene transitions to the witch riding her bike, not a moment before, and that's what I've noticed always sucks first-time viewers into the experience.
Better yet, watch the youtube video "The Dark Side of Oz". It is absolutely THE right way to set it up, to the split second. The color part of the movie starts just as the 2nd side of the album starts playing, etc. You don't have to do any work, that is the one youtube video that for sure has it right.
Agreed, this sync is off by several seconds. The alarms should be simultaneous with the very moment of seeing Miss Gulch on the bicycle, and “Money” should begin when Dorothy opens the door to colorful Munchkinland, not a few seconds sooner.
Maybe what you saw as a thematic miss at the beginning of Shrek (Breathe) actually wasn't. It could be that he's in denial about wanting/needing others in his life and that's where the tone fits.
ALL 4 ‘The Godfather’ clips were PERFECT synchs! You didn’t mute it so you didn’t focus on the music. They fit either emotionally/headspace of the character or lyrically like ‘Us and Them’ when Apollonian and Michael come together, signifying their new found bond. The lyrics begin right after the car explodes and the lyrics are about saying goodbye and seeing them ‘on the dark side of the moon’.
I did this experiment and it will never be the same lol I even saw it in a theater. That was a wonderful shared experience. Thank you so much for joining up science and music 😊
Right or wrong takes on it. Your delivery and the way you are very middle ground. Bravo. There needs to be more of this takes on life and entertainment. Much love dude.
Great Video! I love watching Dark side of Oz. Heard about it online in 1998 and did a short presentation about it in college. It was very well received at the time. Never thought to try it with other movies. Very smart! Great job!
I was thinking to myself...who on earth has the time to figure out how awesome it would be to sync up a movie like Wizard of Oz with the DSOTM album? And then you came along and sync'd it up with 6 movies and scored them all. Kudos to you. You win for the person with the most time to kill :-D Seriously though, well done!
Is that the way it works though? Haven’t you ever turned on the TV picture, when you were listening to music? Let the flickering TV, be a light in the room. Then, of course, you have to be stoned enough to actually notice the synchronicity.
For a scientific study, some scientific information was overlooked. Firstly, of the films you analysed, only The Wizard of Oz was made before Dark Side of the Moon. Secondly, as I discovered when I tried to synchronise Dark Side of the Moon with The Wizard of Oz using Final Cut Pro myself, about 18 years ago, there are some important factors to be considered which make synchronising to achieve the reported coincidences. The movie was shot on film so was probably at 24fps. The DVD source for my attempts was 25fps but a US version would have been 29.97fps or 30fps. Once I realised the complexity, and after several attempts to stretch the audio, I decided not to get bogged down in mathematics and ordered pre-made DVDs, both Dark Side of the Rainbow and The Dark Side of Oz). But it got me thinking that IF (and I'm not presenting a theory, just a supposition) a member of Pink Floyd (or more likely, Alan Parsons) had perpetrated an Easter Egg of such magnitude, they would have had to do so using a cine projector (there were no video recorders or any other means of privately watching a film) and as many of the synchronisations are not strictly musical, more often sound effects or lyrics, could have sat with a stop watch and made notes and by subtle assertion, pulled this off without anybody else knowing. Also, when you mentioned the the two synchs with Money, you didn't mention that a) The Yellow Brick Road in the first synchronisation is believed to represent the gold standard in the original L. Frank Baum fable and b) everybody is wearing green (slang for money) in the second synchronisation.
When I was a junior in high school, I took a music appreciation class. Learned a TON about different types of music and music theory etc. But one week, we were talking about musical structure, and our teacher was trying to demonstrate how musical structure often follows the same kind of narrative structure that we see in stories like film and writing. To demonstrate this over a longer time frame than a 3 minute song, he showed us Dark Side of the Moon synched to The Wizard of Oz. Since Dark Side of the Moon was developed as a continual experience (like a psuedo concept album), we were better able to pick out how the musical structure of the album followed the same sort of rising and falling actions of a typical 3 act structure you might see in a film. Obviously, it didn't match up perfectly, but it was remarkably similar. Really cool to see you come up with the same conclusion. The structure is kinda...timeless in that way. And I think that's pretty rad.
I did watch Wizard to Dark Side some years ago and I found (pretty much like you did) that there were a lot of interesting coincidences, many of which I found quite enjoyable. I found nothing to make me believe that Dark Side of the Moon is anything but an exceptionally well done album following many common time signatures and transitions. So was The Wizard of Oz, a very well written and timed movie, and it's just delightful that they synch up. Never forget, regarding Stanley Kubrick conspiracy theories for example, that many people edited and influenced the movies in post production.
Okay, yeah I thought I was the only one for a second. The audio from the movies kind of kills the entire experience. It’s about giving into the music ultimately.
Oh man this brought back old memories, great video! If you want to dig a little bit more, a buddy and I found out that most nature documentaries will always sync up with the Skyrim trailer on repeat LOL
At one point in the Pink Floyd lyrics he mentions “the man with a gun” on the second time around at the exact same time that the Scarecrow has a green pistol and I never noticed that until listening to the music. I just wonder if there were synchronicities that may have been overlooked too in these films.
I once saw DSOTM synced to that one episode of spongebob where they went to the future and the past (idk the name of the episode). It worked surprisingly often for a 20 minute episode. Sadly it has been removed bcz of copyright
I lived with some high school friends in college. One of my roommates brothers moved out as a freshman and set the Wizard of Oz up with that album for us to watch. It did sync up. It was a cool experience. I appreciate his brother doing that for us after all these years
Nice analysis! Glad someone took the time to do this. But, my dawg. Ya timed Paul Blart wrong. :( Griffin details in the podcast exactly where he started the album.
I wondered about this myself a few years ago. I took it a step further, though, and wondered if any song would sync to any movie. I tried The Matrix trilogy (it was still just a trilogy at the time) and the Nine Inch Nails album _Ghosts._ I think if I were to score it the way you did, I'd probably get somewhere close to a 0.8 FQ. The album is mostly instrumental but the mood of the music almost always matches what's happening on screen. There are a lot of scene changes that line up song changes or the shift if a song's mood or beat. It's a great combination. It's all subjective. If you want to notice it working, it will. And you'll forget all the time it doesn't work. And it's probably true about any music and any movie. It will work as well as you expect it to.
Really awesome breakdown! You toed the line of analytical and candid very well. And you got juuuust enough “into the weeds” with detail without being boring lol.
I actually think the shrek opening is a good thematic sync since the movie does ultimately end up being about him breaking out of his initial role, even if he doesn't know that's what he needs at the start
It's fun to do _Dark Side_ and _Wizard_ together because, even when they're not matching up so well--and they're usually not, especially after the first pass through the album--you're seeing perhaps the most visually interesting movie ever made while hearing one of the all-time great albums. Also, you're supposed to mute the movies!
You missed a key element in the Somewhere Over the Rainbow sync. You must watch Dorothy’s eyes! Whenever she moves her eyes it syncs PERFECTLY with the song moving from one speaker to the other every time!
I always had in mind that the rule of the syncing implied DSotM completely obliterating the film soundtrack. Otherwise, it causes some pretty awkward dissonances (sorry, "spicy chords") when the album and the film score clash.
A note that I didn't include in the video (because I didn't want to bog it down with too much setup and I didn't think anyone would care enough to call me on it. I was wrong!)
There are many things about Dark Side of the Rainbow that I don't explicitly address in the video, and many people have said that I clearly didn't catch all of the synchronicities that exist after seeing my score.
ALSO:
Sorry I didn't mute the audio when I was watching the movies, a lot of you guys feel very strongly that I should have. My bad! I shoulda done that! But what really matters is that I judged all of the movies according to the same criteria, so it's still SCIENTIFICALLY SOUND in my book.
I think you forgot to factor in the LSD.
@scouserfourteen it's not fair to call him out on not noticing things that take like 3 leaps in judgement each in one viewing. Dark Side of the Rainbow has had 30 years for people to jump to conclusions, if they did the same with any of the other movies they'd have way higher scores too. Also, he got #6 and #7.
personally i'd like to try this experiment with a revised scoring system, and also, sync the album with this video and see what happens
Yeah
But its suppose to hold a different meaning with the lyrics instead of the dialogue

I actually don't mind the dissonance of "Over the Rainbow" and "On the Run".
"On the Run" adds an unease to "Over the Rainbow", indicating that even though we yearn for the greener grass of other places and ways, there may be danger, horror and disharmony waiting for us there.
And it's almost like Dorothy is singing against On the Run on purpose; she's trying to fight back against the repetitive, grating nature of life
Yeah I completely agree. It's so haunting.

Starting from the beginning of the Paramount logo, here are all the moments I can immediately think of that work:
It's been a year; did you ever get around to watching more?

The thing is, if you wanted to record an album that synced with a movie TODAY, you could easily do it. But in the early 70s, the logistics of pulling that off would have been... maybe not impossible, but a considerable pain in the butt.
😂😂
Luckily their sound engineer was Alan Parsons
I’m sure it was only a project for him.
Normally when albums and movies are synced up, the movie would’ve been made for the album like with The Wall or Discovery
It’s Pink Floyd, if it was intentional it would’ve been literally perfect, just like the album, lmao.
Back in college, we were watching Dark Side of the Rainbow when it got out-of-sync. Rather than trying to get it back in-sync well over halfway into the movie, we impulsively put the album to a season of Invader Zim. It worked surprisingly well.
Which season? Did you restart the album or just keep going? Do you mind me stealing this idea?
@@abigailment I truly don't know Invader Zim well enough to say. We were using the DVDs that someone else had left in the TV lounge. And sure, knock yourself out!
Pink Floyd: "....race towards an early grave"
Character in movie: *dramatically dies*
I think it’s extremely dependent upon the viewer’s familiarity or affection for both the film and the album- the more you want it to sync up, the more you will be rewarded- we tend to seek patterns in randomness. For me personally, the most synchronous segment is ‘time/great gig in the sky.’
“‘Breath’ is an existential song about feeling stuck and worrying you’re running out of time in your life.”
‘Shrek is just enjoying his bug dinner and ear wax candles.’...while the towns people are planing to run him out of his swamp...almost as if he’s running out of time.
It’s not a metaphorical synch...it’s literal.
“Breathe” is not about running out of time. “Time” is about running out of time. The lyrics are obvious and Roger Waters has said as much.
I think you could say that it gives t more meaning thematically, almost as though to foreshadow that Shrek doesn't want to be doing this really, but he feels like he has to
Pink floyd actually planned out the entire shrek movie to their album
I'd say it's more that Shrek is happy in his rut, but because he doesn't KNOW he's in one. His life as he knows it IS ending, to be replaced by something better, richer, and more rewarding.
No one is talking about how on the blart side of the mall as he begins to come up the elevator crying, us and them begins to climax with the saxophones. It was really a spiritual experience

You sent him to Syd Barrett land.
Lmao

If Scorsese had directed it the film probably wouldn't be as good as it is, but we would definitely have that car scene with a pink floyd song
Yes. However it’s especially cool high
I just got finished watching it for the first time and I was sober and I loved it. I'm so amazed by it.

I have the dvd too and it's even better high! lol
This is one of my favourite videos to come back to every once in a while, truly interesting and extremely well made

@@Jim26D getting hit with the window when the music completely changes sound definitely blew me away.

It is! And there are sounds like pigs in the background too and as you know, what she falls into is a pig stye
Probably the first time you realize how cool this is.
Also “on the run” starts as soon as she falls, and before that the lyrics “turn around” sync with Dorothy turning around and then right after “all you touch” as she grabs some guy’s arm (the same guy who picks her up after she falls, don’t know his name)
He left out a great deal. I don't know if he meant to.
Muted with closed captioning
I recently realized why the pacing of the movie is so strange. Whenever the vocals change pitch, Paul changes what hes doing. If the vocals are held, he holds the action until they shift. Bsotm might be a coincidence but it's hard to think so when it all matches up so perfectly, down to changes in actions
Pretty sure the movie is "traditionally" supposed to be on mute. I've only done it with Oz, but it obviously avoids the sound clashes, which can get pretty annoying tbh
Yup.
Its even better with the movie soundtrack left at a reasonable level, and Dark Side of the fucking Moon on mute.
Best way is to play the movie on mute with subtitles.

"The Wizard Of Oz Was Written In The 1890s, And It Carried A Secret Message That Wasn't Decoded Until 1964. ... But no one noticed the clear parallels to American politics in the 1890s until a historian named Henry Littlefield published an analysis of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1964"
🏆
@John Dough Are you aware of, have you researched the Oz Alegory? This goes much deeper than you think.
Dude money plays because it's the first part of the movie in color. That got a lot of money in theaters because it came out when color movies were not common place
Even if it was unintentional, there is so much deep meaning in the synch. Sometimes art makes itself.
Oz could refer to troy ounces or how gold is weighed
It is said that Kubrick approached the band at one point for soundtrack work, but it never panned out.
can you email it to me?
yeah, or you can upload it to google drive and share the link or something

The fact that this only has 90k views and the channel has less than 2k subscribers is criminal
The production quality on this is excellent
Maybe what you saw as a thematic miss at the beginning of Shrek (Breathe) actually wasn't. It could be that he's in denial about wanting/needing others in his life and that's where the tone fits.
😂😂
"The Godfather is an absolute chore" words I thought I'd never hear lol
And the Wizard of Oz isn’t really about anything?
@@OhanaFilms ik lol, you'd never hear those words outside of this video
It is tho
@@naoexistimos777 yeah, nah
ALL 4 ‘The Godfather’ clips were PERFECT synchs! You didn’t mute it so you didn’t focus on the music. They fit either emotionally/headspace of the character or lyrically like ‘Us and Them’ when Apollonian and Michael come together, signifying their new found bond. The lyrics begin right after the car explodes and the lyrics are about saying goodbye and seeing them ‘on the dark side of the moon’.
I hope the effort of this video lives on, this was so interesting
I did this experiment and it will never be the same lol I even saw it in a theater. That was a wonderful shared experience. Thank you so much for joining up science and music 😊
You can't accurately rate these unless you watch it on acid
Watched it last weekend on acid, absolutely insane
Shrooms is better (better tracer effects(my opinion)and you must listen/watch with headphones if not don't waste your time
Agree with the shrooms opinion. Cos with acid your f*cked for the next 12 hours after you watch the movie. Hard to remember it after that.
Did it thrice with weed, loved it
U don’t need any drugs at all! That’s the magic of movie syncs...u will feel like ur tripping while viewing even if ur sober !
Dark Side of the Moon synced to Transformers: Dark of the Moon?
Just throw some electronics in a dryer
😂😂😂😂 that would be oddly interesting yet disppointing
Stoners.
Is that the way it works though? Haven’t you ever turned on the TV picture, when you were listening to music? Let the flickering TV, be a light in the room. Then, of course, you have to be stoned enough to actually notice the synchronicity.
How does this not have that many views? There was a lot of time and effort put into this.
This is an outstanding video that i'm only finding now, a year later. That ending compilation gave me chills.
Awesome video, you clearly put a ton of work into this and I hope you get the recognition you deserve
Wait....you left the volume of the movie on? You’re suppose to turn the volume off and just hear the album...
Okay, yeah I thought I was the only one for a second. The audio from the movies kind of kills the entire experience. It’s about giving into the music ultimately.
Yes, this is correct, thank you for bringing it up!
Really appreciate the effort and year of work. Awesome stuff!
Me too. Years ago. About the time the 🦉 🦉 show up.
I once saw DSOTM synced to that one episode of spongebob where they went to the future and the past (idk the name of the episode). It worked surprisingly often for a 20 minute episode. Sadly it has been removed bcz of copyright
Sb129
This has got an Unraveled quality
I lived with some high school friends in college. One of my roommates brothers moved out as a freshman and set the Wizard of Oz up with that album for us to watch. It did sync up. It was a cool experience. I appreciate his brother doing that for us after all these years
Dude I got really high and watched the hangover convinced that it was matching up with Igor
Nice analysis! Glad someone took the time to do this.
But, my dawg. Ya timed Paul Blart wrong. :( Griffin details in the podcast exactly where he started the album.
I wish more people tried this with silent films, there's a lot of potential to alternative "scoring" for that!
Its interesting how many of the most fitting scenes use The Great Gig in the Sky
This gives off big TH-camr energy and I hate that he is so underrated
The reviewer has not partaken in mushrooms, and it shows...
we should sync dark side of the moon to the wall
Enjoyed your work. You are very clever. I wish you much success
Really awesome breakdown! You toed the line of analytical and candid very well. And you got juuuust enough “into the weeds” with detail without being boring lol.
It's so chilling when "race towards an early grave" and a character dies
Awesome video, I'd love to see your point system done with MCR's the black parade and 6 random movies🤣
OUTSTANDING work, Jackson! I'm inspired to try this with Citizen Kane and Donnie Darko and the Fifth Element now. Wow.
That scene with Vision and the iconic Cap and Thanos in Infinity War... Is just...
I love it.
what a wonderful video. all around just well made and documented.
Most underrated channel of all time.
This video is amazing, how on earth does it not have more views? Also, bold of you doing a video so copyright-strikeable
