4:11 Softimage went from being “industry standard” to “bought by Autodesk and shut down”.

Thank you for mentionning the immense contribution of Montreal and Quebec to computer animation, something I never was aware about.

That means it took an entire year just to render the entire Toy Story movie. Wow. Computers sure have come a long ways. The average high end gaming computer could probably do that in hours, now.

I love the history of this series. But dude, the way you speak. It’s the fastest monotone ever. So much so that it turns into a blur.

5:56 It wasn’t that they “broke away”, it was that George Lucas needed to get some more money for his divorce settlement, so he sold the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm to Jobs. The name “Pixar” was the name of a special piece of hardware (the “Pixel Array Computer”) they were producing at the time for rendering computer graphics.

Part 3 of 4, of the early history of Computer Graphics. Personal reference...by 1983, I had started my college years. Computer classes at this time, consisted mainly of IBM, and early PC programming work, which I found very tedious. By 1987, though, I had classes using the Amiga 1000 & 500, where the focus finally moved from the Computer Sciences dept., to Art.

My dad still has his Amiga 1000 from July of 1985 + 500 when he bought that when we were on holiday in Holland in April of 1987-US, UK, etc didn't get it till Sept of that year
And they both still work :-)

The Great Mouse Detective used CGI for a scene where the characters are inside Big Ben and the CGI animation was for the gears of the clock tower.

But the 2D characters in the film were still in traditional cel animation.

Thank you so much for these videos. I'm having to an essay for my Art History class and it's helping fill in the blanks. I hope I can use this information to my advantage as a future animator.

I don't mind your using those clips from my video explaining the computer animation I did for the first Star Wars feature, but I think you should credit it correctly. It was done in the late 70s ('76 to be exact), but it was not ILM The first incarnation of ILM, the one in LA, had no CG capability. I was subcontracted to do that work which I did in a special computer graphics lab developed by Tom DeFanti at the University of Illinois in Chicago. It was **after** the success of Star Wars that Lucas brought in Catmull et al to set up his in-house Graphics Group. So did "Lucas revolutionize computer graphics in the late 70s" ?? The revolutionary computer technology that I used was developed by Tom DeFanti. --- Larry Cuba

You’re absolutely right and I have been making an effort to properly cite the all the clips used. I use these videos as a way of retaining information. Thank you so much for your work and your input!

CAPS wasn't first 2D animation software, Marc Levoy develop the Computer Animation System for Hanna-Barbera in shows in the 1980s such as Yogi's Treasure Hunt & The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries.

I recently asked a relative at home, "What would have happened to PIXAR, had Ed, John, and the rest went to Bill Gates instead of Steve Jobs?". She basically said they would have lived a few years with the short films, but they would be out of business before they could finish the CAPS system. I'm ironically writing this on a Hewlett-Packard Windows 10 laptop. If anyone has a good guess, or just an answer in general, feel free to answer with a reply. Please keep it polite (profanity is allowed, just don't attack anyone.), and have a nice day. :)

This narrator is hilarious. Perfect mix of boredom and rushing to get done

Fascinating series! Little known fact, this was the first TV series entirely narrated by a computer. (That's a joke.)

John Lasseter is a computer animation legend, I don’t care what they accuse him of, that shouldn’t take anything away from his accomplishments as a movie maker. He did the Stained Glass Knight. He did Toy Story. He blew our minds.

    The narrator speaks too fast....
    What's the hurry, sport?
I'd like to see an electronics engineer describe the video circuitry in some detail.... a quite technical video would be well received.

Hey mate. I really enjoyed this but I find it difficult to understand your dialogue. Could you please slow down slightly and work on sounding less monotone. Thanks.

One suggestion I have for you is to back away from your microphone a bit. It's apparent that in your videos thus far, you're sitting very close to your mic and keeping your voice very low, like you're trying not to disturb someone in the next room. If you sit back in a relaxed position and speak at a normal volume, you'll also tend to speak more conversationally, which is better for narration.
