  • Update--Lot of requests for this. The entire MP4 of this tape can be had here
    docs.google.co...
Big Daddy Roth interviewing Von Dutch back in the early-mid eighties. At Von Dutch's garage/shop.
They talk about-Von Dutch's Dad, typography, pin striping and all that entails, gold leaf, squirrel hair for brushes, oil in the ground and sign painting.
And my favorite, Von Dutch holds forth on design and being intuitive. About how you know when it's "wrong." It looks wrong.
He has some foreign bikes that are discussed. Toward the end they show that Von Dutch also is a muzzle loader hunter and keeps black powder around in tins. Since he's obviously a heavy smoker I found that funny.
Got the tape from Ed Roth's mail order back in the 80s.
I noticed there are 10 minutes worth of this interview on the internet. Here's the whole she-bang. Quality better but still 2nd generation video. That quality is the reason for the seeming smudge under Von Dutch's nose. The video is averaging the dark nostril holes that are prominent on Von Dutch and darkening the area. When it's close and tight there is no smudging.
This is not monetized. The intent is to share something I'm assuming has become rarified almost to the point of being lost.

What a gold mine,I cant believe you got this. Every pinstriper should be watching this. Direct instruction from the salty bro that created it. With Ed Roth behind the camera none the less. Great video set bro.

It's nice to see someone else who has issues with some of the brushes out there. I practice if I can every night and have been. I have tried Kafka's brushes, I can't get them to work for me no matter what, I even lengthened the handles on them because my hands are bigger and the scrollers are too short. Still can't get them to work. I tried a standard Mack 00 brush, it works ok but not great, so far the only thing I found and I had to lengthen the handle on is the Mack X-Caliber which looks so much like the Hillers he's talking about here. I am going to try one more brush and that's the Mack Vortex Wizard but it's nice to see this video and someone show exactly how the brush should be turned. This video is better than most I have seen on here without all the fancy instructions and numerous things that make it sound like you need to be an engineer or an art major. Von Dutch is still taking the rest of the painters to school 20 plus years later.
