Pregabalin has ruined my life and I am still suffering from the withdrawals and akathisia 5 years after stopping taking it. It made the pain worse over time too and I wish Doctors were more open to opioids as they actually work when used correctly.

Holy cow! I have been on this medication for 3 years. In that time, I gained 65 lbs in 8 weeks and developed PCOS. My hair fell out, I began getting skin tags and growing odd facial hair. I developed brain fog and memory issues that significantly affected my life. I developed severe dry eye and began getting corneal abrasions from my eyes moving in my sleep. I complained about these issues to my docs and got plenty of advice to eat sensibly and exercise more, as well as prescriptions for more drugs. I tried to lose the weight but it just wouldn't come off, and no one believed me when I said I was dieting and exercises 2 hours per day. I also began to experience ADHD symptoms and intrusive thoughts (OCD). I am shocked that none of my docs pointed out these side effects are connected to my meds. I was convinced they were all "the new normal" of having an autoimmune disease. But all of the started when I was prescribed Lyrica.

As it turns out, going longer than 48 hours without it, for me, causes SEVERE withdrawal symptoms, that could very easily turn fatal. I found this out the hard way, after faithfully talking them for over 10 years. I'm in the process of weening off, now, as possible DEATH is not an acceptable side affect of ANY medication. I'm not really sure if I'll survive this, or how I'll feel off of it, as I have neuropathy after a leg crush injury. I'm starting out on CBD, and it seems to help.

@@JavierBonillaC i take 225mg in the morning and then at night along with one tramadol. Been on this routine for over 10 years. It allows me to be normal if that is a thing. Before i got on them, i was on hydro 10, oxy, amptrip, naproxen, gapentin, and fentanyl 25micons. Had a car accident back in 2007. They even convinced me to get a Spinal cord stimulator implant/pain pacemaker. It was so hard to get off the harder meds. But pregablin and tramadol has gave me back my sanity and allow me to function. With those two I dont get any high or major side effects. Though im very cautious and every other month i stop taking them to evaluate my TRUE pain. Which is just unbearable imho. I dont want to die early but what choice do i have. I have always followed my doctors instructions to the tee! And still see him every 3 to 4 months for a check up and refills. In order to safely get off of these medications you have to do the "water tapering" and only 10% to 5% drop each time. You will still have some withdrawals but they will be mild and livable. Then taking supplements to help with this as well. It's tough but you can do it, just be patient and do not go fast.

This is just one experience with someone who is also getting radiation therapy, which complicates the whole thing, but I agree for the most part they aren’t great individual fixes, and they don’t really fix anything. But as an adjunct to low-dose opioid It can potentiate the pain relieving qualities but without other positive lifestyle changes you are not going to see any improvement in there general well being. These medication’s are really supposed to help you get to the point where you can make lifestyle changes that could help your disease, or you have a chronic pain condition that isn’t treatable with lifestyle changes and it’s significantly improved their quality of life and they are willing to possibly be on it for the rest of there life

I developed some nerve damage 4 years ago because of my diabetic peripheral (sp) nueropy. (sp). It wasn't that bad....just noticable. My doc immediately responded with gabapentin. I have been taking it since that time. Now I am reading about side effects that I have had but which I never would have attributed to the gaba. Thank God for all of you who have taken the time to inform me about what I began taking when I really didn't need anything as strong as gabapentin.
I am beginning to find other therapies that are proving to be much more helpful. I took in a beautiful stray terrier/bulldog on 6/11/23. Of course, this is a very active breed, so now I am walking BabyDoll four or five times daily. Before BabyDoll I was beginning to become used to using a cane. Now it leans against the wall. From what I can see thusfar, I do not anticipate most of the terrible side effects that so many of you have suffered from. I anticipate that my post gaba days will lack any substantial side effects.
Instead of gaba I have substituted various other remedies that I have used for years when experiencing mild discomfort or pain. (I am 76 now.) I am currently taking a low dose of Ibuprofen every morning. That seems to help keep my back flexible enough to avoid most back spasms. I believe that my chiropractor has helped to prevent my back from getting tied up in knots. (Thanks Doug.) I also have arthritis (sp) in my hands, back and neck. Recently I purchased a leg compression device which covers my feet and calves. That helps push the blood up my legs. I have plenty of ice packs which I don't use and a nifty 'heat belt' which I do use. I get down on the floor every morning and do some stretches that I found on-line. In so doing, I have developed my own 'physical therapy'. All of these small additions to my daily routine have helped a lot. I certainly hope that you can find a gaba-free way to manage your pain. Best Wishes. John

I’m on gabapentin for spinal stenosis. The side effects outweigh any benefits. I am SLOWLY weaning off of it.
I found that a lot of foods make my pain a lot worse. I went on Mikhaila Peterson’s Lion’s Diet (meat from ruminant animals (beef, lamb, deer), salt & water - for 1 month. -I never felt better in my adult life! Then add 1 food back at a time every 4 days. I found I was sensitive to all grains, dairy, eggs & pork; these foods made me achey all over to the point of being bedridden. I find I function the best on a carnivore diet (with only ruminant animals). Dr. Osborne has a lot of good information on gluten sensitivity. Dr. Ken Berry is a good place to start on the carnivore diet. This is a natural way to decrease pain. Our food supply is toxic with seed oils (vegetable oils), preservatives & additives (many of which are outlawed in Europe).

Surgery can aggravate peripheral neuropathy. In this type of situation I would do two things: 1) See if there is another reason for your pain (is the knee replacement working or causing the pain?). That would be the easiest to treat. 2) Work on the peripheral neuropathy if that is the cause. The key here is to find what is aggravating the chronic inflammation (foods, nutrient deficiency, etc) that can be treated. You should be able to get your life back!

My response is obviously. If your body/brain is satisfied with less pain signals and more feel good neurons in the form of endorphins and dopamine then of course it will react with a sudden decrease in this. Sort of like a sugar high that gets you going quickly at first then crashes suddenly once depleted. Next is it's safe to assume a big pharmaceutical company will make their drugs addictive to increase the likelihood of it being used more if anything to quell withdrawal symptoms. Drug manufacturers spend millions of dollars selling medications that should, as advertised work on their own without any advocating. If it works so well then they will ultimately sell themselves and don't need the conflict of interest by spending millions to sell their medications to doctors who peddle them to patients sometimes without any need. Hence why we have become so over medicated as a society and not for the better. Unfortunately when you have so much vested interest in doing the wrong thing by being self justified for doing the right thing, you have the conclusion we have ✌🏽♥️

I like cannabis, I think it definitely helped my sciatica, I think it definitely has a soaring effect on prescription medicine use, however illegal in my state. So idk what to do.

Just because a medication causes bad withdrawals doesn’t mean it’s a bad drug. I’ve come off more classes of medicines than I can count and gabapentenoids are difficult to come off of cold turkey but if tapered it’s hardly noticeable. Also there are plenty of examples of medicines that are very efficient and effective that technically don’t fix the problem. If they provide a marked increase In benefits and the negatives are obviously outweighed then the medicine is indeed causing an effect that treats the pain. If it treats the pain and that’s why it’s being taken then mission success. If you’ve ever been in chronic pain any relief what so ever is a god send. This is the problem with pain clinics now day. They won’t just open up their script pad and write a simple prescription because the patient might get addicted. Instead of using physical therapy and procedures combined with medicine they want to rip the meds away.

This may seem like an over-simplification (it is), but if treatments don't include learning about your unique neuropathy and controlling (and improving) the nerve damage or injury then nothing is going to work.

Is there a national pain alternative?

There is not a great pain alternative without side effects. Some individuals are turning to CBD oils, some are using a machine called Rebuilder (th-cam.com/users/liveF10WATzxLhE) and some are looking for alternative methods like the new methods of stimulating your adult stem cells (this has taken away pain in many patients - th-cam.com/video/6bt52NYE06A/w-d-xo.html)

You do not use lyrica for cancer induced pain. Also, most people can easily wean off them. Of course, it only masks system. How are you supposed to fix acute nerve damage from physical trauma?

there are just a couple of medications that actually cure over the past 100 yrs. Medication suppresses it doesn't cure

Lyrica works amazing for me @45yo… night and day for pain. W/o it I can’t walk.. with it I can walk all day.. maybe there will be a cure soon, we know it’s like an Advil… Even as a supposed Dr you don’t know how this feels with neuropathy on or off Lyrica. Your mom was probably 80yo, in pain regardless … don’t tell people not to take medication that didn’t work for one 80yo…

I love that Lyrica is working for you!! I have treated hundreds of patients with bad side effects of peripheral neuropathy medications including Lyrica. My goal is to not just repress the symptoms with these medications but improve the nerve function (also resolving the pain).
PS My mother was under 70 years-old and I have peripheral neuropathy myself.

Without talking about an alternative solution, it’s a worthless video.

This is an awful drug. It helps me sleep, the problem is I don't want to get out of bed the next morning. It is going down the toilet today.
