- Hello friends! Tell me I'm not the only one with slight Cruella Deville intentions when seeing a flooffy dog... So that is why in this video we will attempt to make a laceweight yarn out of my dog's fur. Our family dog is an Akita Inu, so she has been shedding heaps of her fur now that the seasons are changing.
Chiengora, or dog wool, is said to be up to 80% warmer than sheep's wool. So we will spin some! I'll be using my vintage double drive spinningwheel Bernadette, a chatty little lady, but exquisite at spinning lace yarns.
Some people say dog yarns smell like wet dog, but it is the dog that makes a dog smell like wet dog, not its fur. So when processed into yarn, it does not smell. Or that is at least my experience with it.

My grandmother used to spin dog fur. I have a cardigan that she made almost 50 years ago. This was actually my motivation to learn to spin - which I did last year. I've been saving Malamute fur for 3 generations of dogs now and I'm just sampling now to determine if I want to go with 100% dog fur (like grandma did) or mix with wool. Glad to see I'm not the only one who threatens to turn their dog into a sweater!

"Chiengora" and Cruella DeVille's theme song at the beginning is brilliant! I am a 66 year old man who has been knitting since my mom taught me when I was 6. I would love to feel what this yarn feels like when working with it. No doubt, very soft.

I am doing this right now with hair (wool) from my poodles. It's probably a lot easier for me than folks with straight-haired breeds...the staple of a poodle is VERY much like blue faced Leicester, so I just grow my dog out a bit and give him a wash and a haircut - much like sheering a sheep.

I’ve mentioned before that my grandmother was a spinner. She would often spin her dogs’ fur. She had 2 Snow White Samoyed dogs! The thick, fluffy, downy undercoat was so incredibly soft!
I can imagine! Samoyed are quite a bit fluffier than our akita inu 😁
I also have an Akita Inu, Bear. He's a red fawn and white and his undercoat is a gorgeous very light gray. I combed out his fur yesterday and got about as much as you showed in your bag. I was amazed how clean his undercoar was. My Akita doesn't have any smell to his fur at all. I can't wait to get started.

I think this every time I give one of my collies a brush. he's got so much soft fluffy undercoat that we often lay it out on the floor after brushing him and I have wild ideas.

@@MijnWolden I would love to spin his fur. But I have yet to buy a replacement drop spindle. And I can't afford an actual spinning wheel.

I've spun dog hair and used it a lot . Mostly with wool. Looks beautiful. Can't wait to see the hat

My boyfriend has a Vallhund which has the flooooofiest undercoat and sheds a ton so whenever he's losing his winter coat I want to spin it so badly! I still haven't learned how to spin even normal wool yet though, so we just put it outside for the birds to make the softest warmest nests ever.
Lucky birds! Before I learned how to spin I was always twisting our dog's fur between my fingers... So evidently a spinningwheel was a logic step 😂
I don't spin yet (no room for a wheel in my flat!) but you best believe I threaten my partner with dog wool sweaters "one day" every time I brush our incredibly fluffy corgi/golden retriever mix.
Threatening sounds so negative though... Promosing dog wool sweaters is better 😉
I don't have a dog, but I help take care of some horses & ponies & when their winter coat sheds out it spins up nice.

@@MijnWolden I made crochet squares for people as a keepsake of their horses as most of them are older; it was very soft, don't know about warm.

interesting that you should post about dog 'wool'. We have a smallish mix of a shitzu and maltese and so he doesn't have fur, allegedly, but hair. We are supposed to brush him and comb him daily, but he hates it so we let his 'hair' grow and then cut it all off and end up with a completely different, and much smaller dog. Less bothersome to him (takes about two hours once in a while, as opposed to two hours every day) and hilarious for us. Anyway, a while back, I wondered if dog hair is feltable. It is. It made some very interesting and strong-looking felt. I wonder if spinning his hair would be very different from your dog's fur. If we let his hair grow long (which would require combing it) it could grow to between 10 and 15cm long in the longest area (and he would be walking around, collecting anything not fixed to the ground - twigs, leaves, etc) so that would be long fibers. Some of his hair is quite thick (individual hair) and some is so fine it flies everywhere when he gets a haircut. I'll be cutting his hair in a week or two (I always feel sorry for him - doesn't hurt him, but he doesn't enjoy it) and I'll see if I can 'spin it' without any spinning equipment, since I don't have any. Where there's a will there's a way. I'm thinking of a stick with a bit of clay near one end. I saw that somewhere on youtube at some point. Great and interesting video. Thanks! Tot ziens.
A stick or dowel should work well enough. I'm quite sure it Will spin, I have spun my own hair once as An experiment. Though I'm not sure it Will be a soft yarn to make clothing with. But it's still a cool Keepsake from your dog.
As a pet groomer I can tell you that dog hair felts readily, unfortunately sometimes on the poor critter if the owner makes the mistake of trying to "wash out" the matting. Also as a side note if you roll a ball of dog hair densely and get it really well felted it will bounce!

I have considered. But then I always fall in love with them myself and can't bear to part with them 😅
@@MijnWolden I completely understand. I found some hanks of 100% cashmere that was reclaimed from its previous life as a sweater and I made a neck warmer and a hat. My thinking was that I was going to give it as a gift BUT IT'S CASHMERE and I've never had cashmere before. I can't part with it. Lol 🤣😂
