Written by St Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century, probably in the wake of the declaration of the feast of Corpus Christi, the "Adoro te devote" was not originally intended for any liturgical use but most likely used as a private prayer by St Thomas in his daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, but was later incorporated into the Roman Missal of 1570 after the Council of Trent. St Thomas also composed the Sequence "Lauda Sion", and the hymns "Pange Lingua", "Sacris Solemniis" and "Verbum Supernum".

Learning the Hymns by St Thomas Aquinas moves me in so many ways internally. I am in one way saddened by how Theological depth of the lyrics is no where to be found in (the music of) many modern parishes . The is secondary to the sadness of the loss of Latin, which can often be translated in beautiful ways but still more like a shadow to the original language made into music- it's that even if we did sing these hymns in many places, it may as well be instrumental music to people who have never spent time learning latin. I am amazed that this man who was not a master musician, took on the task of writing a few hymns and that they all went down in history as classics. At the heart of all of this is that I am moved by the beauty of the hymns themselves when considered by themselves. It is just poetry and music that makes me better on every level of sense and thought.
