I just located one of these machines. it is virtually brand new, it was put into storage after only 5 hours of use. I am impressed with the quality and the sound, I dont know who did the engineering on these but they have without the finest transport of any 2" machine I have ever worked with.
Can you please help me and explain how to open the upper deck, to see underlying parts like the Pinch Roller Solenoid? Do I have to remove the whole head ?
I owned this 24track recorder for many years and it sounds great ! I also had the Tascam M600 desk in the 90's and I produced and recorded all the Lords Of Acid Albums from the 90's on it !
Your drums and bass sound so good... I am obsessed with that dry muffled sound. I categorically refuse to ever record, play or listen to drum kits without foam/cloth/tape all over them Hoping to find a decent MS-16 soon, recording on a pair of Fostex R8s now
@silvertonejones i had never seen one of those before i bought it either. It's a very reliable machine and looks very much like an Otari MTR. Thanks for your comment. Cheers.
@gonchujam well it depends on what kind of tape you are using. but generally you don't want to record too low because of hiss, and to benefit from tape saturation. Make sure your deck is aligned to the tape you are using and you can push it a little bit.
Why does this sound so incredibly good?? even after the youtube audio compression. Is it because of the stereo separated instruments. But this is possibly one of the best songs ive heard. a bit underprosuced.... but that is the charm that makes this song so awesome.
hi am lucky i have alot of 2 inch decks i only got the uk soundcraft and otari because of getting parts and fixing them my self otari mx80 is very good could not get the mx 90 in my house just to big so when buying check size love the otari mtr12 decks as well
@silvertonejones Yes it does. I´m very impressed by its mechanics. It´s been very well maintened by the previous owner. About the SC im seriously thinking of sending mine´s master section to Jim Willians to mod it. Have you done that to yours? And that is me singing and playing guitar. Band playing straight to tape with few overdubs.
This is not the most didactic video but, the recording is has the nicest mix and being in tape makes it even sweeter, The vocal is singed in brazilian portuguese and has the blues :) Thanks for this 5 minutes...
Olá amigo. Não encontrei muitas descrições no seu blog, você tem um estúdio de gravação analógica? Tenho banda e estou interessado, em fazer uns projetos old school. Valeu ae bro!

ah ok, I don't know how to align the machine according to the tape... I'm using an AUDIOTAPE blank tape... I'll see what to do about it, I think I'll be recording somehtin today I'll see if I can film it and upload it thank you!
I think I've watched this video just on time... I've just bpught an 8 trck Teac 80-8 and I've started making some recordings... I was wondering, as i see in your video, if the needle of the VUS must reach or not the red part of the line, because when I set up the volumes of the line in I check the "peak" level doesn't get lit but maybe the needle doesn't reach 0 in the VU... but here the needles go up to +3 in most of the VUs and ther'es no peak... I hope to get an advice! Thanks a lot
even after whatever youtube does to this, compression, whatever, in the first three seconds it jumped out of my speakers so lively, sounding better than a cd ever could. record companies sold the digital compact disc to the public thinking they were gonna reap pure profit, and it totally backfired on them. it opened the door to music downloading and piracy and to hear them cry about it now makes me laugh. the greedheads got what they deserved. i'm so glad i kept my records all these years. I want one of these two inch multitrack reel to reels now and a record lathe to make my own records. DAWs are nice to make easy work and all, but the good sound to my ears is always gonna be pure analog. natural sound waves are analog. it's how our ears and brains perceive sound, digital sound will always be an imitation.
@silvertonejones 2" 16 trk must be awesome! never worked with that. BTW, i checked your channel, nice place you got there, is that a SC6000 with patchbay? i got one of of those too :)

Hola Bunker! Fantastic recording, I came to your video trying to find some information about this amazing tascam. I’m about to buy one in very good condition, but everybody tells me there is a lot of hiss in Tascam ATR. In this recording I didn’t notice barely any hiss. How do you control this? Is it worth it to have this very big machine for a home studio? Lovely version! Parabens!
Yes, if it is well maintained, properly aligned and calibrated (with good tape), you should have very gentle hiss (specially at 30ips). This machine is VERY well built and Tascam inherited it from Ampex ATR fabrication lines when they bought it (i was told so by a very respectable engineer). I already sold mine as i closed the studio, but when i had it, i took very good care of it and used it on a daily basis for 10+ years with no problems at all. A real workhorse! But you have to make sure the machine is good and working condition as mine was BEFORE buying it. If it is not, it could turn into a maintenance nightmare. About being worth or not, it absolutely is, IMHO, as long as you don't expect it to act like a daw. You will have a lot of manual reading, buying expensive tape, techie talk, buying: O-Scope, Demag, Fish Scale, Tentel, Alignment tape...and so on.....with that being said, it should give you goose bumps everytime you playback a take! Cheers!
Bunker Analog thank you very much! Would you recomend any mixer? I’m being offered a good deal for a tascam TM D8000 and a motu 2408, to pasa it to my daw, could it work with this tape recorder?
