if they ever create a time machine i would take many pink floyd fans as i could fit into the time machine and go back in time and live through pink floyd from the time they started to the time they eneded. love PF!
The overall tone of the song seems rather melancholy mainly in the chorus, even though on the surface it's just a simple song with a silly-sounding melody. I think you're both right. The song makes me think of Syd and his presence in the band when this song was written. Syd was fading away.
Yeah, Imagine this, Syd could not go, so Roger had to do it everything by himself, and when he saw the video, he got angry, but they could not record again because of the money
the song was recorded in october of 67, the last single written for the floyd by barrett. this promo video was filmed in a fruit market in belgium just after barrett was replaced by gilmore, with waters lip syncing barrett's vocals
Initially I wasn't as crazy about this song as with other Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd songs, and there' s parts that are very similar to "Corporal Clegg", but as with every Syd Barrett song (even on the uneven Opal album), it gets better and magical with every listen. Thanks Arnoldlayne2 for posting this and the other obscure Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd classics.
CDM spanishschool Nope..Bob Dylan did. Not only invented, but mastered. Check out subteranean homesick blues, or countless other early dylan rap tunes. Blacks invented "gangsta rap", and the anti-social crap that is called "hip-hop". They can have it...

...and the list goes on and on. In the movie of "the Wall" Pink's spiral into madness is said to be modelled after Syd's erratic behavior, especially before & during the 1967 US tour...on the album "Dark Side of the Moon," PF's exploration of "insanity" is a direct result of questioning their understanding of Syd's "insanity" and their guilt about the way he was treated...PF would have been nothing without Syd. He gave them their careers, even long after they gave up on him.
What a great find! This was at one time my favorite Floyd song. This is somewhere between the almost pop-rock "See Emily Play" and "Vegetable Man"/"Scream Thy Last Scream Old Woman With a Casket," which were a little too out there even for me...
Nice close ups while you're lip synching Rog!! Hahhahaha! hilarious, this is great. A shame syd can't be there though, but roger filled in the singin' part alright, eh? lol
One of the funniest Floyd videos ever, I think. Nick Mason's "singing" looks so funny ;D Perhaps because he doesn't sing usually. And David Gilmour' looks so young!
@egyptianminor I don't disagree that his songs were whimsical and refreshing. My point is that people base a stance that Barrett Floyd is better than the classic lineup. Any album that had Barrett on it was when he was strung out and going through the motions. Comparing Piper plus the three songs in which he participated on Saucer to DSOTM, Meddle, and AHM is like this song. Apples and oranges. But which one stands the test of time better? Which one are you more inclined to listen to?
1st: i like to be polite cos i like to get polite answers like yours, you're welcome. 2nd: yep, the Axe is surely a psych tune, but most of Barrett production with Floyd is (Overdrive and the whole Piper as well imho). Barrett looks more poppy, maybe, cos of his childish way to intend word+sound expressive mean, but it's exactly in it that i find a huge psichedelic point, cos it really seems a way to mind-expand to me.
As far as I know this song was only released as a single, much like a lot of the early Pink Floyd recordings with Syd. Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett is the best without a doubt!!!
I think this is the vid when Syd was still in Floyd (there was a short time with five members) but when they were shooting this Syd always stopped miming and just staring in the distance in the middle of song. So in the end Roger had to done the vocal part.
Syd must saw this video, when he wrote "Jugband blues": "It’s awfully considerate of you to think of me here And I’m most obliged to you for making it clear that I’m not here" "And I’m wondering who could be writing this song"
+David Nuzzi go and see Emily play if you want a shock.. Again, what the hell is Gilmour doing in this video since it is Barrett who's singing. Anybody who knows Pink Floyd a little at least knows that this can't be Water's voice. They're taking us for a ride .
+David Nuzzi both this and See Emily Play with Gilmour were filmed either after Syd had left, or when he had already gone downhill. The band decided to continue on without him, so yes, there were a couple of instances where they had to mime his vocals and even guitar parts for promotional purposes. They weren't trying to fool anyone, they were just trying to continue on without him. obviously it took a few more years for them to find their way.
It depends if u like rock dinosaurs or psychedelic masterpieces..you're right that something new was started, but the quintessential Floyd sound died. And it was the spirit of Syd that fuelled that original genius. And i wasn't aware that having an opinion was lying!!!Steady darlin...
@Nycago Hmmm...Oddly enough, Syd did get the sax players idea wrong, because on DSOTM they used one sax player and 2 female backing singers, to great effect I might add. Maybe he was right all along huh?.... :)
@Huntster They started out great. this is after their first album. Only between Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets was when they made their 'bad" songs. They were kind of lost without Syd at first.
i have to agree with you, but if they kick him out then wat are they suppossed do? bring him back? He wrote the song for the band, not jjust him. but i do agree with u it isnt very fair that syd is left out of a song he wrote. :)
i was just listening to the early Pink Floyd singles and i am hearing similarity between the song and Sgt Peppers Lonely hearts club band by The Beatles, which came first the chicken or the egg?
No; poop634 was correct. Syd wrote (it's the last one he wrote) and sang this song. David wasn't in the band at this point; and Syd was starting to go off the deep end shortly after this time. That's why neither of them are in this video.
Just to clear it up for everyone; Roger Waters is lip synching to Syd Barrett's vocals, David Gilmour is on guitar, Syd is not in the video, and Nick Mason is not singing. The song was originally done with Syd, but the video was made after David replaced him. Song=1967, Video=1968.
Dave wasn't hired until after Syd became unreliable, and that is Dave in the video. Somewhere in the biographies you'll see mention of a period where Syd was still included for writing even after Dave joined up to fill the spot in their performances.
hi dragmio, i wouldn't call it pop, i'd call it psychedelic, and it's quite revolutionary to me. It's up on tastes however i think: i love it and i find it actually new if compared to the whole '60s production (and i love the whole '60s production)
Sandro28gizz>> No, I didn't mean that on the letter. I meant that he was still in the band, but in so very bad shape/condition because of all acid/LSD, so he couldn't play and sing. But he managed to get himself together so much that he's on the first LP (The piper at the gates of dawn) R.I.P. Roger "Syd" Barrett R.I.P. Rick Wright
Wow- I've never seen this before. Roger lip synching Syd? Very weird. Must have been EARLY '68, David not yet at all comfortable in his role. Nick rockin' the double bass drum
Please bear in mind that all the drama with Syd took place in 1967 - before there was widespread acceptance and support for mental illness, particularly dissociative disorders like schizophrenia. The band, I feel, did the best they could at the time, and made sure that Syd received his due, even by pointedly including his songs in their concert playlists so that he got paid each time they were performed.
@mujuma Well if any rock is supposed to be revolutionary, it is 60's rock. But this is pop, like most of Syd's stuff. I do realize some pople like it, but I am glad they've changed their sound.
Actually, there was a live version of this song, I believe, and Roger recalled that Syd would play when they weren't taping, and when it was time to go, he would just freeze, or play one chord over and over. I don't hate Roger, and he and David had always made sure Syd was getting a cut, and this was throughout the years. I don't think for a single moment, they would ever want to have to repeat all of that, but I'm glad they looked after Syd, at least financially.
@danceflooroddities Well, maybe it was both, because I read a book by Nick and he said Syd would just stand on stage and do absolutely nothing, and sometimes he'd just go up and de-tune his guitar before they started playing...
this is so funny, but before i got to listen to this song for the first time, my friends and I had a passcode for apples as cigarettes, and oranges for marijuana haha
This was early 68'.Syd did lip synch this song in Nov. 67' on American Bandstand in Los Angeles and seemed coherent. Saw the video here before Dick Clark or someone else had it pulled.
I don't know for certain but im pretty sure it will have been one of those time where the band either decided not to pick syd up or syd simply did not show.
Why wasn't this on Saucerful of Secrets? It's not available on any album, but is superior to some of Syd's nursery rhymes on Piper at The Gates of Dawn like Gnome and Scarecrow.
Not wanting to read all 325 comments- why was the March+ 1968 Floyd miming to a song released in Oct (I think) 1967? Was this for French television or something? No wonder Rick has a bottle of wine on his Farfisa...
Gilmour was in the band in case Syd woulnt play... so it could be in late 67...??? but probably in early 68; as we can see, Wright is wearing the same hat on 'Paint box'...
Roger lipsyncing to Syd, priceless
+The Skoolmustard
so funny yet so odd
it makes me laugh, but cry at the same time
Roger lipsyncing to Roger*
if they ever create a time machine i would take many pink floyd fans as i could fit into the time machine and go back in time and live through pink floyd from the time they started to the time they eneded.
love PF!
For some reason this song brings me to tears, I can't quite explain why.
If you find a reason why, please let us all know!
I think it must be the video, the fact that Roger is miming Syd's vocals shows that Syd is no longer and the band have moved on
The overall tone of the song seems rather melancholy mainly in the chorus, even though on the surface it's just a simple song with a silly-sounding melody. I think you're both right. The song makes me think of Syd and his presence in the band when this song was written. Syd was fading away.
He was just 21; keep that in mind when you,ll read this in 40 years.
Syd Barret is without question the original talent of Pink Floyd
I love this song, Fred Frith thought this was the greatest wah wah guitar playing ever put on record, I'm inclined to agree.
Roger miming to Syd
Poor Roger and David. I can't figure out which one looks more uncomfortable in this. LOL
Yeah, Imagine this, Syd could not go, so Roger had to do it everything by himself, and when he saw the video, he got angry, but they could not record again because of the money

miming away while syd was minding away....
ha ha ha. yep; mindind away!
Gerard Nantot is that funny????
Too soon

My favourite Pink Floyd song.
Thought it had the Syd "swagger" haha. Thanks dude. I love youtube for this because you can learn so much..
Anyone here in 2023 has an absolute amazing taste in music
The look on Roger's face is priceless!
Don't know why your all slagging this song ? A classic from probably the best band ever ?
Brilliant song, Brilliant band...
Dave's all "I have no idea how to mime these guitar parts."
The intro was kinda like rap
exactly...pink floyd invented the rap...

Could you imagine Syd wearing a pair of Jordan's and gold chains with a bunch of girls twerking around him 😂😭😂😭
He had gold teeth and a marijuana shirt

This song is hypnotic, and I cant stop singing along :O...This is about the 5th time Ive played it in a row..woah
Wright looks really cute on the organ in this video.
I love the song as well, of course!!
What a great find! This was at one time my favorite Floyd song. This is somewhere between the almost pop-rock "See Emily Play" and "Vegetable Man"/"Scream Thy Last Scream Old Woman With a Casket," which were a little too out there even for me...
It's easier to watch without the sound. Seeing that big adorkable lug mouthing Syd's words makes me cringe.
calm down mate jesus
I love seeing Roger smiling and having fun.
And You got to love him for it!
Peace & Love
love roger's face 2 min 37
Hahahahaha
Love this song! Pink Floyd rocks!
@JimmyRimsphere well said.
at the end, syd suggested they needed two female saxophonists in the band.
he's a genius, but his mind was mad.
Nice close ups while you're lip synching Rog!! Hahhahaha! hilarious, this is great. A shame syd can't be there though, but roger filled in the singin' part alright, eh? lol
Now here is a true classic :-)
such a lovely tune!
God I love Roger's expressions!
Peace & Love
Love this song
vegetable? nice way of putting it mate syd lives on!
weird roger singing without syd
thanks for posting!!
Me gusta todo PINK Floyd ... 💎🍀🇲🇽🌎👍

i'm fairly certain that roger didn't have any say in how this video was created. it was all decided by the record company.
As far as I know this song was only released as a single, much like a lot of the early Pink Floyd recordings with Syd.
Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett is the best without a doubt!!!

Oh, okay. Yeah. Thanks. Thanks for the premission. *preachy hippy!*
this is great!
its so cool!!!
singing what my syd sings!!!
brillaras por siempre mi crazy diamond!
Syd must saw this video, when he wrote "Jugband blues":
"It’s awfully considerate of you to think of me here

"And I’m wondering who could be writing this song"
My youth. This song of peace. Эта песенка про мир и любовь. Чистая.
i love them i love this song amazing!
Never mind. I so hope it'll be on iTunes, so I can download it!
Muito estranho o Roger dublando o Syd.... a voz do David ficaria mais parecida, já que não tinha outro jeito hehe

this is definitely Barrett singing but he is not in the video WTF is that all about

I'm most obliged to you for m, making it clear that he's not here
Syd couldn't function during this time. That's why they got David as a fifth member but then decided to go on without him. It's pretty sad.
ill advised trying to put this record out in this way.

This is VERY influential. Indirectly, maybe, but it psychedelic rock is and was very important to the evolution of music.
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!! i cant decide whether roger can pull off lip synching syds voice though..lol

Im a big PF fan!!!especially the Gilmour era blows my mind. It is so genius!!But this song , which is very new to me, is a funny one :D
I had a demo of this but no picture cover.
Whoa, didn't realize that at first.
RIP Syd...

Apples and oranges are for good. Was this song like one commercial? Guys looked like they were well vitaminised.
The guitarist is Gilmour. Syd refused to lip sync the song so waters did.

genius song, syd was great.
Pink Floyd, still first in band in space ;)
from which album this song?its a single?
r.i.p rick thank you for everything.
yeah its Gilmour because thats not syds guitar.and Gilmour's prominent guitar at the start of Floyd was a telecaster!
When the camera first panned to Roger i nearly screamed!
(With fear or joy.... i'm not sure yet)
jajaja roger's faceee omg they are great
Would you care to clear that up for me? I've been looking for this song FOREVER!!
all hate for Roger miming aside (lol)
the 45 of this is extremely rare, worth some money
dont lie, the Pink Floyd Sound left, but Pink Floyd came when Dave came, and with that a successful future for the 4 young british boys
I don't know for certain but im pretty sure it will have been one of those time where the band either decided not to pick syd up or syd simply did not show.
