Hay, Jay! I'm a Forester and I'm going to answer your question about the big knot on the side of the tree. It's called a burl. It is where you get burled wood. What happens is the tree was wounded years ago. A certain type of fungal spore landed on the wound and started growing in the new wood tissues. The new wood growth and the fungal growth swirl around each other. The growth is abnormal but doesn't do much harm to the tree unless it completely surrounds the trunk. Burls are often harvested for their beautiful grain pattern. They can be turned on a lathe or sliced into thin sheets for furniture veneers. Hope I didn't go too forestry nerd on you. Happy Trails. Enjoying following you.

The privy is big because Georgia uses moldering privies, which means the privy pits are above ground and get air circulation. Once the pit under the toilet gets full, we’ll come move the toilet to the other side and leave the full pit to compost. After a couple of years, we’ll remove the mulch, sift it for trash (and wipes - I don’t care how biodegradable they say they are, they don’t compost) and distribute the mulch in the area. Then we’ll move the toilet over the new empty pit and start the process over again.

That weird thing on the tree was a burl, they're caused by any sort of injury to the tree causing the rings to grow all wacky inside. It's still wood inside and some woodworkers like it to make stuff because of its look ✌🏽

Hey Jay! Gooch has such a beautiful privy, but that shelter is too short! Loved the music today, such a perfect accompaniment to those views. I love that guys kilt! I wanna try one this summer. Not sure I have the legs to pull it off, but you only love once right? Clear skies are great, but with no clouds that radiational cooling at night is brutal. You keep pushing miles you will have buns of steel in no time! I think you stopping at woods hole and then pushing to blood mountain cabins to catch up on stuff is a great idea. The cabins are really great. We all appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos, they are so great. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

Oddly enough, the privys had to be ADA compliant. The Smokeys has one I've seen. If a wheelchair can make it there, I could potentially see the accommodation, but I can't see a wheelchair (with someone in it) making it over the rocks, drops and climbs to avail themselves of a ramp.
